Few long-term follow-up studies of substance abusers have examined gender differences. In the current study, gender differences were examined at 36 months following residential or outpatient drug-free treatment among 951 participants in the Chicago Target Cities Project, the majority of whom were female (62%) and African American (93%). There were no differences in the proportion of men and women who reported any alcohol or drug use at the 36-month follow-up, with an overall reduction of 41% from intake.

Research Design And Methods: A prospective study was conducted on 57 pregnant women divided into three groups: the zidovudine (ZDV) group, HIV-infected women taking ZDV (n = 20); the triple treatment group, HIV-infected women taking triple antiretroviral agents ZDV + lamivudine + nelfinavir (n = 25); and the control group, pregnant women considered normal from a clinical and laboratory standpoint (n = 12). Blood was collected from the umbilical cord of newborn infants upon delivery for measurement of insulin level.
A longitudinal prospective study was conducted in 21 women with polycistic ovary syndrome (PCOS), aged 27.20 +/- 5.02 years and treated with metformin (1500 mg/day)for 8 weeks.

In response to this uncertainty, the present study analyzed a longitudinal data set of addiction treatment clients to determine the statistical agreement between clinical and economic outcomes over time. Data were collected from 1,326 clients in the Chicago cohort of the Persistent Effects of Treatment Study.

Methods: Of fifteen patients with chronic renal failure, seven had moderate-severe disease and eight had been on chronic hemodialysis from 5 to 17 years, with renal osteodystrophy (ROD) confirmed by bone biopsies. Twelve normal subjects of similar age and gender volunteered for the control group.
To evaluate the membrane expression of histocompatibility (HLA) class I (A-C) molecules on lymphomononuclear cells involved in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes, we studied 20 newly diagnosed Brazilian patients and 20 matched controls. The coexpression of HLA and cluster of differentiation (CD) molecules was evaluated by flow cytometry. Compared to controls, patients presented increased fluorescence intensity of HLA class I molecules on CD3+, CD4+ and CD8+ cells.

We used the 1998-1999 Indian National Family Health Survey of ever-married women in the reproductive age group and analysed data from the states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh (n = 11,369). Overall, about three-fifths of rural women did not receive any antenatal check-up during their last pregnancy.

The known association between leptin, obesity and insulin action suggests that leptin may have a role in PCOS but this has only been addressed peripherally. This study was designed to assess the relationship between serum leptin and the anthropometric, metabolic and endocrine variables of obese (body mass index, BMI (3)30 kg/m(2)) and non-obese (BMI <30 kg/m(2)) PCOS patients.

Fifty-five healthy individuals and 112 patients in various pathological states, including type 2 diabetes mellitus, essential hypertension and others, were studied after an overnight fast and for 3 h after ingestion of 75 g of glucose, by HOMA, QUICKI and the forearm technique to estimate muscle uptake of glucose combined with indirect calorimetry (oxidative and non-oxidative glucose metabolism). The patients showed increased HOMA (1.

In the present experimental study, we analyzed the enamel organ of the mandibular incisors of the offspring of rats with alloxan-induced diabetes. By light microscopy, no alterations could be found in the enamel organ of rats born to diabetic mothers compared to normal ones, except in one case.

The coexpression of HLA and CD3, CD4, CD8, CD19 and CD14 molecules was evaluated by flow cytometry. HLA-DRB1, -DQA1 and -DQB1 alleles were assigned using amplified DNA hybridized with sequence-specific primers.

Physician knowledge as it relates to the decision to proceed or recommend carotid endarterectomy was investigated, using disaggregate discrete choice analysis. Canadian neurologists, neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons, and internists were surveyed.

The Brazilian Multicenter Study performed between 1986 and 1988 evaluated the prevalence of diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance.
Objective: To assess the prevalence of diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance in the urban population aged 30-69 years of the city of Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil.

The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of chronic calcitonin deficiency on bone mass development. The results of 11 patients with thyroid dysgenesis (TD) were compared to those of 17 normal individuals (C) and of 9 patients with other forms of hypothyroidism (OH): 4 with hypothyroidism due to inborn errors of thyroid hormone synthesis and 5 with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The subjects received an intravenous calcium stimulus and blood was collected for the determination of ionized calcium (Ca2+), calcitonin, and intact parathyroid hormone.

Objective: To assess the impact on ordering errors when physicians stopped handwriting patient identifiers on requests for blood transfusion.
Material And Methods: Physicians, frustrated by the amount of time required to complete paper forms to order blood, asked if the requirement for handwritten patient identifiers, which were in addition to such information "stamped" on blood requests, could be eliminated. We acquiesced to the request, modified the blood ordering forms accordingly, and continued to monitor ordering errors.
Enamel hypoplasia is an important clinical problem commonly seen in children born to diabetic women. We aimed to characterize the enamel hypoplasia in Wistar rats born to alloxan-induced diabetes mellitus rats. Groups consisted of pregnant rats supplemented (ISDR) or not (NISDR) with insulin and controls, in which sterile saline solution was administered instead of alloxan or insulin.

Initially, it consisted of one laboratory technologist who was assigned the task of performing certain basic QC checks on a predetermined list of laboratory, collection, and processing steps. This technologist reported directly to the medical director.

Diabetic patients (N = 17) and healthy subjects (N = 17) were evaluated by 1) pulmonary function tests including spirometry, He-dilution method, N2 washout test, and specific airway conductance (SGaw) determined by plethysmography before and after aerosol administration of atropine sulfate, and 2) autonomic cardiovascular activity by the passive tilting test and the magnitude of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). Basal heart rate was higher in the diabetic group (87.

Although the Brazilian population is highly miscegenated, HLA-DRB1*301, DRB1*04, DQB1*0302, and DQB1*0201 alleles, which are associated with the development of type 1 diabetes in several Western populations, were also overrepresented in Brazilian patients. In addition to HLA-DRB1*15 and DQB1*0602 alleles, DRB1*11, DRB1*13, and DQA1*01 allele groups were associated with protection against the development of type 1 diabetes in Brazilian patients.
