Hospital admissions for trampoline-related injuries are a metric of injury severity. The literature shows hospital admissions are more likely to occur from trampoline park injuries rather than home trampoline injuries. The purpose of this study was to investigate the demographics, injury characteristics, patient experiences, and economic impact of home versus trampoline park injuries requiring admission to hospital before and after two indoor trampoline parks opened in the catchment area of a Level II trauma centre.

Background: Satisfaction with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is correlated with the fulfillment of expectations. Good surgeon-patient communication impacts how expectations are formed and managed. The TKA communication checklist was developed to help surgeons better understand and manage patients' postoperative expectations in order to increase satisfaction with TKA.

Developing a surgeon-patient communication checklist for total knee arthroplasty.

Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a well-established surgical procedure with high rates of clinical success, yet up to 20% of patients are dissatisfied with their outcomes. Surgeon-patient communication is an important contributor to patient satisfaction, particularly in the area of setting or resetting postoperative expectations that are reasonable and achievable for individual patients.

Objective: The goal of the present research was to develop a communication checklist for surgeons to use with their patients, to enhance communication in order better to manage postoperative expectations and increase patient satisfaction with TKA.

Aspirin or Rivaroxaban for VTE Prophylaxis after Hip or Knee Arthroplasty.

Background: Clinical trials and meta-analyses have suggested that aspirin may be effective for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (proximal deep-vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism) after total hip or total knee arthroplasty, but comparisons with direct oral anticoagulants are lacking for prophylaxis beyond hospital discharge.

Methods: We performed a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial involving patients who were undergoing total hip or knee arthroplasty. All the patients received once-daily oral rivaroxaban (10 mg) until postoperative day 5 and then were randomly assigned to continue rivaroxaban or switch to aspirin (81 mg daily) for an additional 9 days after total knee arthroplasty or for 30 days after total hip arthroplasty.

Orthopedic surgical care, like all health care today, is in flux owing to an aging population and to chronic medical conditions leading to an increased number of people with illnesses that need to be managed over the lifespan. Funding agencies and disease organizations: resources and recommendations to facilitate ALS clinical research.

Ten groups presented their perspectives on facilitating clinical research in ALS including four federal agencies, four disease organizations, one foundation and one advocacy group. The federal agencies (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Office of Rare Diseases Research, Department of Defense) encourage fostering a team approach between pre-clinical and clinical research investigators, coordinating with patient groups in the early phases of clinical studies, enhancing private and public partnerships, and investigating the interplay between genetic susceptibility and environmental exposure. The disease organizations (Muscular Dystrophy Association, ALS Association, ALS Society of Canada, and the Motor Neurone Disease Association UK) support fellowship training programs to develop ALS clinician scientists, and encourage work on the epidemiology of ALS, on genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that are relevant to ALS pathogenesis, on developing ALS registries and biobanks, and building bridges of collaboration among study groups.

O-GlcNAcylation is an abundant posttranslational modification in the brain implicated in human neurodegenerative diseases. We have exploited viable null alleles of the enzymes of O-GlcNAc cycling to examine the role of O-GlcNAcylation in well-characterized Caenorhabditis elegans models of neurodegenerative proteotoxicity. O-GlcNAc cycling dramatically modulated the severity of the phenotype in transgenic models of tauopathy, amyloid β-peptide, and polyglutamine expansion.

The harmful effects of alcohol and its contribution to Emergency Department (ED) presentations are evident on a daily basis and undoubtedly add a significant burden on the health care system. Despite alcohol's prevalence in ED presentations, formal screening for alcohol use is not routinely applied in EDs. This paper reviews the evidence supporting the use of screening and the use of brief interventions in the ED.

Background: Pain is the primary indication for both primary and revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA); however, most arthroplasty outcome measures do not take pain into account.

Objective: To document the prospective pain experience following TKA, with subjective pain-specific questionnaires to determine if comorbidities, preoperative pain or preoperative pain catastrophizing scores are predictive of long-term pain outcomes.

Methods: Fifty-five patients with a primary diagnosis of osteoarthritis of the knee, who were scheduled to undergo TKA, were asked to fill out the McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) and the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) preoperatively and at three, 12 and 24 months follow-up.

The aim of our study was to reveal the role of laminin, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and bone matrix proteins in mesenchymal cell differentiation during uroepithelial bone induction using a well-established canine model.

Safeness of Simplex-tobramycin bone cement in patients with renal dysfunction undergoing total hip replacement.

Purpose: To compare the pharmacokinetic profile of tobramycin in blood, urine, and at the operative site following the use of Simplex-tobramycin bone cement in primary total hip replacement between patients with and without renal dysfunction.

Methods: Six patients with renal dysfunction underwent cemented primary total hip replacement for osteoarthritis. The elution characteristics of Simplex-tobramycin bone cement in the 6 patients with renal dysfunction were compared with 9 patients who had normal renal function.
