X-Ray Crystal Spectroscopy of Sub-picosecond Laser-Produced Plasmas beyond 50 keV.

The interaction of a sub-picosecond (sub-ps) laser with a high-Z target produces a hard x-ray continuum, but to our knowledge no high-resolution study of the line emission is known. We present here crystal spectroscopy as a tool for the observation of energetic line x-radiation from a sub-ps laser-produced plasma. Reflection properties of flat and bent crystals for x-ray spectroscopy are analyzed theoretically for both the Bragg and the Laue geometries and optimized for a crystal spectroscopy of hard (>50 keV) x-radiation.

Prenatal contact with inhalant allergens.

Pollen contact in early infancy may enhance the risk for subsequent pollen allergy. In this study likelihood of a prenatal antigen contact, as a result of inhalation of pollen allergens by the mother, was investigated. Due to the seasonal occurrence of allergens studied, the date of priming can be estimated, and this can supply data about the maturation of the fetal immune system.

Deciding to move home: a preliminary analysis of household migration behaviour in Scotland.

"This paper examines data from a mainland Scotland survey of household migration into owner-occupied properties identified from the Register of Sasines. Plotting of movements reveals migration patterns, but of arguably greater interest are the increasingly segmented and largely unexplored household decisions which drive migration. The purpose of the survey was to reveal something of these migration processes.

Characterization of novel peptoid agonists for the CCK-A receptor.

The successful design of peptoid CCK-B receptor antagonists using rational approaches suggested that it might be feasible to develop similar non-peptide small molecule agonists with potential therapeutic applications. We now report the characterization of such a compound with full agonist activity at CCK-A receptors on rat exocrine pancreatic acinar cells. The compound, PD149164, stimulated a similar maximal response to CCK8 from the exocrine pancreas in anaesthetized rats in vivo, and from isolated pancreatic acini in vitro it also generated intracellular Ca2+ oscillations similar to those evoked by CCK8.

[Conservative functional therapy of closed rupture of the Achilles tendon. Treatment approach and analysis of results].

In a prospective study in the period from May 1989 to April 1994, 161 patients at the Unfallchirurgische Klinik in Braunschweig were treated for rupture of the Achilles tendon using a conservative functional method. A follow-up examination was carried out on 132 patients (81%) after an average of 12.6 months.

Survival, regeneration and sprouting of central neurons: the rat septohippocampal projection as a model.

The septohippocampal projection was used to study the survival following axotomy, axonal regeneration, and sprouting of a defined group of central neurons. Septohippocampal projection neurons in adult rats were axotomized by bilateral lesions of the fimbria-fornix. Using prelabeling prior to axotomy, intracellular staining, electron microscopy, and immunocytochemical and in situ hybridization techniques, we were able to demonstrate that the majority of septohippocampal neurons survived after axotomy.

[Surgical therapy of hemorrhage after endoscopic sphincterotomy. Indications and technique].

Although considerable progress has been made in characterising the 5-HT1A receptor using agonists, partial agonists or non-selective antagonists, further studies of 5-HT1A receptor function have been hindered by the lack of highly selective antagonists. The term 'silent' antagonist has been used for such compounds in order to distinguish them unequivocally from several 5-HT1A receptor partial agonists which were initially designated 'antagonists'. In this report we provide a comprehensive review of the biochemical, pharmacological and behavioural properties of the first potent, selective and silent 5-HT1A receptor antagonist, WAY-100635 (N-[2-[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1-piperazinyl]ethyl)-N-(2- pyridinyl)cyclohexanecarboxamide trihydrochloride).

Thoracoscopic pulmonary surgery: indications and results.

Developmental upregulation of the neural cell adhesion molecule VASE exon in slice cultures of rat hippocampus.

The factors limiting axonal growth in the mature CNS are poorly understood. It has been shown that the neural cell adhesion molecule VASE exon (variable alternative spliced exon) is one of the factors that may account for the downregulation of neurite outgrowth. Here we demonstrate that the developmental upregulation of the VASE exon is preserved in slice cultures of hippocampus, making these cultures a useful model to study the regulation of VASE and age-dependent growth processes in an organotypic environment.

The role of anaerobic power in human tolerance to simulated aerial combat maneuvers.

The relationships of anaerobic power, blood lactate levels, and selected anthropometric measurements to +Gz tolerance were examined in 10 adult males. Upper and lower body anaerobic indices were determined by Wingate anaerobic tests (WT). Acceleration tolerance was measured as duration time for a simulated aerial combat maneuver (SACM) centrifuge profile with alternating 4.

A pharmacological profile of the selective silent 5-HT1A receptor antagonist, WAY-100635.

WAY-100635 (N-[2-[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1-piperazinyl]ethyl]-N-(2- pyridinyl)cyclohexanecarboxamide trihydrochloride) is an achiral phenylpiperazine derivative that binds with high affinity and selectivity to the 5-HT1A receptor. WAY-100635 displaced specific binding of the 5-HT1A radioligand, [3H]8-OH-DPAT (8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin), to rat hippocampal membranes with a pIC50 of 8.87.

Natural and recombinant enzymatically active or inactive bee venom phospholipase A2 has the same potency to release histamine from basophils in patients with Hymenoptera allergy.

Background: A complementary DNA encoding the major bee venom allergen phospholipase A2 (PLA) has been characterized recently. Recombinant PLA was produced in Escherichia coli and purified to apparent homogeneity. Natural PLA was compared with recombinant PLA in its ability to release histamine from blood basophils.

Tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis: an immunological disorder?

A 14-year-old boy with tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU syndrome) is described. Nephropathy improved without systemic cortisone treatment, whereas uveitis relapsed and was treated with topical steroids. Blood cell immunological analysis and serum analysis revealed signs of cytotoxic T-cell, macrophage and granulocyte activation, which declined as the clinical symptoms improved.

Early thoracoscopic debridement and drainage as definite treatment for pleural empyema.

Objective: To report our experience with early thoracoscopic debridement and drainage in the treatment of pleural empyema in the fibrinopurulent or early organising phase.

Ranitidine bismuth citrate and ranitidine do not affect gastric emptying of a radio-labelled liquid meal.

Ranitidine bismuth citrate, a new chemical entity which is a salt complex of ranitidine and bismuth citrate, is being developed for the treatment of relapse of benign gastric and duodenal ulcer and eradication of Helicobacter pylori. The aim of the present study was to establish whether ranitidine bismuth citrate (800 mg) or ranitidine hydrochloride (300 mg) have any effect on gastric emptying of a liquid meal using gamma scintigraphy. On three separate occasions, each of twelve subjects received a single oral tablet of 800 mg ranitidine bismuth citrate, 300 mg ranitidine hydrochloride or placebo in random order.
