To adapt to an uncertain world, humans must learn event probabilities. These probabilities may be stationary, such as that of rolling a 6 on a die, or changing over time, like the probability of rainfall over the year. Research on how people estimate and track changing probabilities has recently reopened an old epistemological issue.

Article Synopsis
  • Sarcopenia, a condition characterized by loss of muscle mass, is prevalent in end-stage liver disease and can worsen patient outcomes during liver transplantation (LT).
  • This study assessed the practicality of using MRI to analyze body composition in LT patients, tracking changes both while on the waiting list and after transplantation.
  • Results indicated that a majority of participants had high muscle fat infiltration and low muscle volume at waitlisting, but after LT, there were increases in muscle volume and fat distribution, suggesting potential benefits from early intervention and monitoring.

Introduction And Objectives: Sarcopenia is a common complication of end-stage liver disease (ESLD), but its exact relationship to myosteatosis and frailty remains unclear. In this pilot study, we tested the feasibility of a specialized MRI protocol and automated image analysis in patients with ESLD.

Materials And Methods: In a single-center prospective study, adult liver transplant candidates with ESLD underwent assessment of muscle composition between 3/2022 and 6/2022 using the AMRA® MAsS Scan.

Objectives: This explorative study analyses interrelationships between peripheral compounds in saliva, plasma, and muscles together with body composition variables in healthy subjects and in fibromyalgia patients (FM). There is a need to better understand the extent cytokines and chemokines are associated with body composition and which cytokines and chemokines differentiate FM from healthy controls.

Methods: Here, 32 female FM patients and 30 age-matched female healthy controls underwent a clinical examination that included blood sample, saliva samples, and pain threshold tests.

Background: Liver cirrhosis, the advanced stage of many chronic liver diseases, is associated with escalated risks of liver-related complications like decompensation and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Morbidity and mortality in cirrhosis patients are linked to portal hypertension, sarcopenia, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Although conventional cirrhosis management centered on treating complications, contemporary approaches prioritize preemptive measures.

NAFLD is common after liver transplantation (LT) and is associated with an increased metabolic burden. Currently, there is a paucity of investigations into the treatment of post-LT NAFLD. In the present study, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of saroglitazar, a novel dual peroxisome proliferator-associated receptor α/γ agonist, on the treatment of post-LT NAFLD and metabolic burden.

Extensive research in the behavioral sciences has addressed people's ability to learn stationary probabilities, which stay constant over time, but only recently have there been attempts to model the cognitive processes whereby people learn-and track- probabilities. In this context, the old debate on whether learning occurs by the gradual formation of associations or by occasional shifts between hypotheses representing beliefs about distal states of the world has resurfaced. Introduction: Obesity is a common comorbidity in fibromyalgia (FM). Both FM and obesity have been connected to low-grade inflammation, although it is possible that previously reported inflammatory alterations in FM primarily may be linked to increased body mass index (BMI).

Objective: This study aimed to investigate whether the inflammatory plasma protein profile, muscle blood flow, and metabolism and pain characteristics (clinical parameters and patient-reported outcome measurements) differed between female patients with FM with and without obesity.

Background: High mammographic density is an independent risk factor for breast cancer by poorly understood molecular mechanisms. Women with dense breasts often undergo conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) despite its limited specificity, which may be increased by diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and contrast. How these modalities are affected by breast density per se and their association with the local microenvironment are undetermined.

Background: Obesity is a risk factor for the development of fibromyalgia (FM) and generally most studies report increased Body Mass Index (BMI) in FM. Obesity in FM is associated with a worse clinical presentation. FM patients have low physical conditioning and obesity further exacerbates these aspects.

Background: Common features among patients with more advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are systemic inflammation and a loss of both muscle mass and normal muscle composition. In the present study, we investigated COPD subjects to better understand how thigh muscle fat infiltration (MFI) and energy metabolism relate to each other and to clinical features of COPD with emphasis on systemic inflammation.

Methods: Thirty-two Caucasians with stable COPD were investigated using questionnaires, lung function tests, blood analysis and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for analysis of body- and thigh muscle composition.

High mammographic density and exposure to sex steroids are independent risk factors for breast cancer by yet unknown mechanisms. Inflammation is one hallmark of cancer and the tumor necrosis factor family of proteins (TNFSFs) and receptors (TNFRSFs) are key determinants of tissue inflammation. The relationship between TNFSFs/TNFRSFs and breast tissue density or local breast estradiol levels is unknown.

Intense interval exercise has proven to be as effective as traditional endurance exercise in improving maximal oxygen uptake. Shared by these two exercise regimes is an acute reduction in plasma volume, which is a suggested stimulus behind exercise-induced increases in blood volume and maximal oxygen uptake. This study aimed to link exercise-induced metabolic perturbation with volume shifts into skeletal muscle tissue.

The development of the infant gut microbiota is initiated during pregnancy and continued through early life and childhood, guided by the immediate environment of the child. Our aim was to characterize the shared microbiota between dogs and children as well as to determine whether introduction to dogs of a dog-specific probiotic combination modifies the transfer process. We studied 31 children from allergic families with pet dog(s) and 18 control families without a dog.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has reached epidemic proportions, affecting an estimated one-quarter of the world's adult population. Multiple organ systems have been implicated in the pathophysiology of NAFLD; however, the role of skeletal muscle has until recently been largely overlooked. A growing body of evidence places skeletal muscle-via its impact on insulin resistance and systemic inflammation-and the muscle-liver axis at the center of the NAFLD pathogenic cascade.

In fibromyalgia (FM) muscle metabolism, studies are sparse and conflicting associations have been found between muscle metabolism and pain aspects. This study compared alterations in metabolic substances and blood flow in erector spinae and trapezius of FM patients and healthy controls. FM patients ( = 33) and healthy controls ( = 31) underwent a clinical examination that included pressure pain thresholds and physical tests, completion of a health questionnaire, participation in microdialysis investigations of the etrapezius and erector spinae muscles, and also underwent phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the erector spinae muscle.

Background: Liver iron content (LIC) in chronic liver disease (CLD) is currently determined by performing an invasive liver biopsy. MRI using R2* relaxometry is a noninvasive alternative for estimating LIC. Fat accumulation in the liver, or proton density fat fraction (PDFF), may be a possible confounder of R2* measurements.

Unlabelled: Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a leading cause of acute liver failure and transplantation. DILI can be the result of impaired hepatobiliary transporters, with altered bile formation, flow, and subsequent cholestasis. We used gadoxetate dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI), combined with pharmacokinetic modelling, to measure hepatobiliary transporter function in vivo in rats.
