Background: Mast cell activation is critical for the development of allergic diseases. Ligation of sialic acid-binding immunoglobin-like lectins (Siglecs), such as Siglec-6, -7, and -8 as well as CD33, have been shown to inhibit mast cell activation. Recent studies showed that human mast cells express Siglec-9, an inhibitory receptor also expressed by neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of severe lower respiratory infection, and therefore, a major threat to global health. This study determined the epidemiological and molecular characteristics of RSV among cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) among children in the Philippines.
Method: The study included archived nasopharyngeal swab and oropharyngeal swab samples collected from patients under the age of five who are presented with ILI or SARI for the period of 2006-2016.
Objectives: Human adenoviruses (HAdV) are known to cause a wide range of diseases including acute respiratory infections, conjunctivitis, and acute gastroenteritis. In this study, we aimed to determine the serotypes of HAdV in patients with influenza-like illness (ILI) in the Philippines from 2006-2012 and to describe the demographic and epidemiological characteristics of patients who tested positive for HAdV.
Methods: Between 2006 and 2012, the Philippine National Influenza Centre detected HAdV in 1294 samples of patients with ILI.
A simple and independent system to detect and measure the position of a number of points in space was devised and implemented. Its application aimed to detect patient motion during radiotherapy treatments, alert of out-of-tolerances motion, and record the trajectories for subsequent studies. The system obtains the 3D position of points in space, through its projections in 2D images recorded by two cameras.

Our aim is to determine the axonal damage in normal appearing white matter measured by magnetic resonance spectroscopy and to correlate this with the functional disability measured by Multiple Sclerosis Functional Composite scale, Neurological Rating Scale, Ambulation Index scale, and Expanded Disability Scale Score.
Methods: Thirty one patients (9 male and 22 female) with relapsing remitting Multiple Sclerosis and a Kurtzke Expanded Disability Scale Score of 0-5.
Introduction: In view of the increasing interest in measuring health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and that is widely accepted Quality of life (QL) is a valid marker of results of treatment in chronic dialysis, we marked the aim to determine QL of the patients > or = 75 years in chronic haemodialysis and to determine the influence of different factors (comorbidity, analytical, cognitive deterioration, depression and self-sufficiency) over the results.
Methods: We used the Kidney Disease Quality of Life (KDQOL-SF), questionnaire of health that has been become an useful instrument for measuring CV into this population. Demographic and analytical data, comorbidity (Charlson Index), depression (Yesavage), self-sufficiency (Karnofsky) and impaired cognitive function (Cognitive Mini-Exam) were collected.
The syndrome known as migraine with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pleocytosis is a clinical syndrome of controversial pathogenesis characterized by typical migraine headaches occurring in a fixed period of time along with lymphocyte pleocytosis in CSF which persists during intercritical periods. We present four new cases of this syndrome diagnosed in our service and we review those cases published in the literature in which there were no personal headache antecedents, attempting in this way to separate this syndrome from other types of migraine as included in the present classification. There also exists the possibility that it might be a question of a secondary process, the pathogenesis of which may play a part in the activation of the humoral immune system, given the frequent existence of immunogenic antecedents the previous days as well as that of a humoral reaction expressed as an increase in IgG levels in CSF with normal blood electrophoresis.
