Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is caused by an expansion of CTG repeats at the 3'-UTR of the serine/threonine protein kinase DMPK. Expanded CTG repeats are toxic since they are transcribed into an RNA molecule which is then sequestered within the nucleus in the form of foci. RNA cytotoxicity is linked to the aberrant splicing of several developmentally regulated genes.

In adaptive thermogenesis, brown fat converts mitochondrial energy to heat, whereas tissue-specific functions of mitochondria in white fat are less characterized. Because of its importance in basic biology and medicine, great efforts are being devoted to unraveling of the genuine mitochondrial proteome, which is the dynamic protein complement that the organelle uses to maintain its structure and functionality. Several proteomic investigations have now clearly shown that all the purification approaches we have at our disposal suffer from the problem of co-purification; therefore, it is very difficult to distinguish novel mitochondrial proteins from those that are just contaminants of the preparation. The question is further complicated by the fact that the mitochondrial proteome depends on the tissue source.

Although critical to life, energy production is not the only function of mitochondria, and the composition of this organelle is tailored to meet the specific needs of each cell type. Background: Although many evidences suggest the presence of specific therapeutic factors in brief dynamic therapy (BDT), few studies have investigated its efficacy in the treatment of depressive disorders in comparison to other psychotherapies. The relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) has not yet been fully clarified. The aim of the present study was to analyze DSM-IV OCPD prevalence rates in OCD and panic disorder (PD) patients to test for the specificity of the OCPD-OCD link, and to compare them to OCPD prevalence in a control group of subjects without any psychiatric disorder. A total of 109 patients with a principal diagnosis of DSM-IV (SCID-I) OCD and 82 with PD were interviewed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II Disorders (SCID-II) in order to assess the prevalence of OCPD.

Today, a significant environmental problem is due to the presence of industrial landfills, some of them old, which can release toxic compounds into the environment (Chemosphere 42 (2001) 415; Chemosphere 31 (1995) 3455). The identification of directly linked to the leachate tracers of contamination in the wells around the landfills, as early markers of a potential risk for the environment and/or man, is a good strategy for an early evaluation of contamination. Our protocol developed for wells water characterization is based on solid phase extraction combined with GC-MS and HPLC-MS/MS.
