Article Synopsis
  • Hepcidin is a hormone linked to iron regulation, produced by colorectal cancer (CRC) cells, and this study investigates its potential as a prognostic biomarker in microsatellite stable (MSS) metastatic CRC (mCRC).
  • The research found that mCRC patients with serum hepcidin levels over 40 ng/mL had a significantly lower one-year overall survival rate compared to those with lower levels, indicating a strong link between high hepcidin levels and poorer prognosis.
  • Multivariate analysis confirmed that baseline serum hepcidin levels independently predict overall survival in MSS mCRC patients, suggesting it could be a useful marker for assessing treatment outcomes, warranting further research for validation.

Background: High expression of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) has been recognized as a marker of improved efficacy of immunotherapy in gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma (GEA); however, the optimal PD-L1 cut-off is still debated. The aim of the present review was to analyze available phase III trials and to identify the appropriate PD-L1 expression cut-off for GEA.

Methods: Phase III trials investigating the efficacy of anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) therapies in addition to standard chemotherapy versus standard chemotherapy in the first-line setting were selected.

Social traits are expected to experience highly context-dependent selection, but we know little about the contextual factors that shape selection on social behaviours. We hypothesized that the fitness consequences of social interactions will depend on the age of social partners, and therefore that population age structure will shape evolutionary pressures on sociality. Here, we investigate the consequences of age variation at multiple levels of social organization for both individual fitness and sexual selection on social network traits.

Interactions between colorectal cancer (CRC) cells and the noncancerous cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME) induce mechanisms for the escape of tumor cells from immune attack. Hepcidin, a peptide that controls immune cell functions, is overproduced by CRC cells. This study aimed to evaluate whether hepcidin acts as a regulator of anti-tumor immunity in CRC.

The interplay between the immune system and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is complex and multifaceted. In COPD, chronic inflammation and oxidative stress can lead to immune dysfunction that can exacerbate lung damage, further worsening the respiratory symptoms. In NSCLC, immune cells can recognise and attack the cancer cells, which, however, can evade or suppress the immune response by various mechanisms, such as expressing immune checkpoint proteins or secreting immunosuppressive cytokines, thus creating an immunosuppressive tumour microenvironment that promotes cancer progression and metastasis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the prevalence of food addiction (FA) in a sample of 842 patients seeking help from nutritionists for weight loss, focusing on their eating habits.
  • Results showed a 15.3% prevalence of FA, with higher rates in overweight and obese individuals, and significant differences in weight loss attempts and eating patterns between those with and without FA.
  • The findings suggest that FA may contribute to obesity and relate to certain psychological conditions, highlighting the need for further investigation despite its controversial diagnosis.

AbstractSocial behaviors vary among individuals, and social networks vary among groups. Understanding the causes of such variation is important for predicting or altering ecological processes such as infectious disease outbreaks. Here, we ask whether age contributes to variation in social behavior at multiple levels of organization: within individuals over time, among individuals of different ages, among local social environments, and among populations.

(1) Background: Sarcopenia lasting >1 year might be considered a chronic condition in many HNSCC patients. CT-scan-derived Skeletal Muscle Mass Index (SMI) is an established surrogate of sarcopenia; yet, the cut-off reported in the literature (literature-based, lb-SMI < 43.2) is mainly based on the risk of chemoradiotherapy-induced toxicity, and the optimal value to discriminate OS is under-investigated.

Not all aspects of the disruption of iron homeostasis in cancer have been fully elucidated. Iron accumulation in cancer cells is frequent for many solid tumours, and this is often accompanied by the contemporary rise of two key iron regulators, HIF2α and Hepcidin. This scenario is different from what happens under physiological conditions, where Hepcidin parallels systemic iron concentrations while HIF2α levels are inversely associated to Hepcidin.

Both individual and group behavior can influence individual fitness, but multilevel selection is rarely quantified on social behaviors. Social networks provide a unique opportunity to study multilevel selection on social behaviors, as they describe complex social traits and patterns of interaction at both the individual and group levels. In this study, we used contextual analysis to measure the consequences of both individual network position and group network structure on individual fitness in experimental populations of forked fungus beetles (Bolitotherus cornutus) with two different resource distributions.

Advanced, metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) is associated with high rate of mortality because of its poor responsiveness to chemotherapy/immunotherapy. Recent studies have shown that hepcidin, a peptide hormone produced mainly by hepatocytes, is expressed by and enhances the growth of tumor cells. We here assessed whether hepcidin expression helps identify subsets of CRC with advanced and aggressive course.
