Article Synopsis
  • Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is linked to severe respiratory illness and acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), with 2022 showing increased infections but no rise in AFM cases unlike in 2018, which had a significant surge in AFM.
  • A study of 351 EV-D68 cases mainly involved children under 5, revealing that infections in 2018 led to more hospitalizations compared to 2022, and identified specific viral genomic changes associated with severe outcomes.
  • The findings emphasize the need for ongoing viral genomic surveillance to better understand the connections between genomic changes, immune responses, and the severity of diseases like AFM.

Spiders are a hyperdiverse taxon and among the most abundant predators in nearly all terrestrial habitats. Their success is often attributed to key developments in their evolution such as silk and venom production and major apomorphies such as a whole-genome duplication. Resolving deep relationships within the spider tree of life has been historically challenging, making it difficult to measure the relative importance of these novelties for spider evolution.

Background: Cervical cancer screening rates in the USA fall behind national targets, requiring innovation to circumvent screening barriers. Cervical cancer screening where human papillomavirus (HPV) testing is performed on vaginal samples collected by the patients themselves (self-sampling) are effective and acceptable, and patient-operated rapid HPV tests (self-testing) are currently under development. It is unclear why there is ambivalence toward HPV self-sampling and self-testing among clinicians, an important stakeholder group.

Article Synopsis
  • Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a prevalent acquired disorder affecting the blood clotting process primarily in dogs and less frequently in cats, leading to significant health risks in both species.
  • ITP can be classified into primary (autoimmune) and secondary (triggered by other diseases), but there is a lack of systematic evaluation regarding which underlying conditions trigger secondary ITP.
  • A comprehensive study developed guidelines through a structured review of literature, expert input, and consensus-building processes to create diagnostic algorithms and screening recommendations for ITP in dogs and cats.

Ninetinae is a group of small to tiny short-legged spiders largely restricted to arid habitats. Among daddy-long-legs spiders (Pholcidae) this is by far the least diverse subfamily but this may partly be a result of inadequate collecting, poor representation in collections or scientific neglect. We build on a large recent collection of the ninetine genus Papiamenta Huber, 2000 from the Leeward Antilles and use cytochrome oxidase 1 (COI ) sequences, extensive scanning electron microscopy data, transmission electron microscopy data and karyotyping to analyse this geographically isolated and poorly known island genus.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that causes pain, degradation, and dysfunction. Excessive canonical Wnt signaling in osteoarthritis contributes to chondrocyte phenotypic instability and loss of cartilage homeostasis; however, the regulatory niche is unknown. Using the temporomandibular joint as a model in multiple species, we identify Lgr5-expressing secretory cells as forming a Wnt inhibitory niche that instruct Wnt-inactive chondroprogenitors to form the nascent synovial joint and regulate chondrocyte lineage and identity.

Clinician-reported outcome measures (ClinROMs) are essential for assessment of vitiligo in clinical trials and daily practice. Several instruments have been developed and tested to measure, for example, vitiligo extent, repigmentation and activity. The goal of this review was to identify all introductory publications of ClinROMs for vitiligo that include at least some aspects of validation and to describe the instruments' characteristics, intention for use and practical strengths and limitations.

Importance: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is a highly lethal cancer that is often associated with human papillomavirus (HPV). Recent studies have shown promise in the use of HPV DNA detection in salivary rinses and plasma as a factor associated with a future diagnosis of HPV-positive oropharynx cancer (HPVOPC). However, the use of plasma and salivary HPV DNA detection in defining risk for recurrence in the context of a prospective, phase 3, clinical trial coupled with standardized clinical surveillance has not been reported.

This retrospective analytical observational cohort study aimed to model and predict the classification of feline intestinal diseases from segmentations of a transverse section from small intestine ultrasound (US) image, complete blood count (CBC), and serum biochemical profile data using a variety of machine-learning approaches. In 149 cats from three institutions, images were obtained from cats with biopsy-confirmed small cell epitheliotropic lymphoma (lymphoma), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), no pathology ("healthy"), and other conditions (warrant a biopsy for further diagnosis). CBC, blood serum chemistry, small intestinal ultrasound, and small intestinal biopsy were obtained within a 2-week interval.

Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) are double-stranded DNA viruses that can cause a wide spectrum of disease, including respiratory infections. Little is known about the value of respiratory HAdV quantification and its correlation with disease severity. In this study, we developed a quantitative HAdV droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) assay to study the association between viral loads, circulating types, and clinical outcomes.

Host-derived cellular pathways can provide an unfavorable environment for virus replication. These pathways have been a subject of interest for herpesviruses, including the betaherpesvirus human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). Here, we demonstrate that a compound, ARP101, induces the noncanonical sequestosome 1 (SQSTM1)/p62-Keap1-Nrf2 pathway for HCMV suppression.

Objective: Complexity and lack of standardization have mostly limited the use of event-related potentials (ERPs) and quantitative EEG (QEEG) biomarkers in drug development to small early phase trials. We present results from a clinical study on healthy volunteers (HV) and patients with schizophrenia (SZ) that assessed test-retest, group differences, variance, and correlation with functional assessments for ERP and QEEG measures collected at clinical and commercial trial sites with standardized instrumentation and methods, and analyzed through an automated data analysis pipeline.

Methods: 81 HV and 80 SZ were tested at one of four study sites.

Background: Enteroviruses (EVs) are predominant causes of a spectrum of neurological diseases. To better understand the origins of the outbreaks of disease associated with EV, it is essential to develop an efficient surveillance system that identifies the circulating EVs and correlate their genomic evolution with the disease presentations.

Methods: The clinical presentations of patients with positive EV from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) between 2014 and 2022, diagnosed at the Johns Hopkins Medical Microbiology Laboratory, were compared from year to year.

Primary human papillomavirus (HPV) testing, in which a high-risk HPV test is administered without cytology, was first included in 2018 US cervical cancer screening guidelines. Subsequent guidelines endorsed primary HPV testing as the preferred method for cervical cancer screening following evidence of its clinical and economic benefits, although many sources still indicate it as an option along with cytology and HPV/Pap co-testing. Primary HPV testing could be key to improving the declining cervical cancer screening rates in the US; however its adoption has been slow as clinicians are hesitant to make the change.

Observational research suggests higher red and processed meat intakes predict greater risks of developing or dying from cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but this research limits causal inference. This systematic review of reviews utilizes both observational and experimental research findings to infer causality of these relations. Reviews from four databases were screened by two researchers.

Measurements of intestinal wall thicknesses from ultrasound imaging (US) are routinely used to support diagnoses of intestinal disorders in cats, however published studies describing observer agreement are currently lacking. The aim of this retrospective, observer agreement study was to quantify inter- and intraobserver repeatability and agreement in the measurement of intestinal wall layer thicknesses and the segmentation of transverse sections of small intestines in US images of 20 cats. Intestinal wall layer thickness measurements of the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, serosa layer, and total thickness of these layers were performed on five cats with small cell epitheliotropic lymphoma, five with inflammatory bowel disease, and 10 with other conditions.

The mygalomorph spiders of the family Atypidae are among the most archaic spiders. The genus Atypus Latreille, 1804 occurs in Eurasia and northern Africa, with a single enigmatic species, Atypus snetsingeri Sarno, 1973, known only from a small area in southeastern Pennsylvania in eastern USA. A close relationship to European species could be assumed based on geographic proximity, but A.
