Oral and genital tardive pain syndromes.

We report the development of chronic painful oral or genital sensations in 11 patients with tardive akathisia, tardive dyskinesias, or tardive dystonia. In each case, the pain syndrome became a source of profound distress for the patient, overshadowing all other concurrent neuropsychiatric symptoms, and requiring treatment. Agents effective in treating tardive dyskinesia and tardive akathisia, such as catecholamine depletors, proved effective in reducing the painful sensations.

Engraftment of human hematopoietic precursor cells with secondary transfer potential in SCID-hu mice.

Human fetal bone fragments implanted subcutaneously in immunodeficient (SCID) mice maintain active human hematopoiesis. In this study, we show that this human hematopoietic microenvironment supports the engraftment and differentiation of HLA-mismatched, CD34+ primitive hematopoietic progenitor cells isolated from fetal and adult human bone marrow (BM). The BM CD34+ cells were depleted of CD2, CD14, CD15, CD16, glycophorin A, and CD19 lineage-committed cells (CD34+Lin-).

Morbilliviral disease in an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) from the Gulf of Mexico.

A free-living adult female Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) found dead near Panama City, Florida (USA), had necrotizing and ulcerative tracheitis, suppurative and hemorrhagic pneumonia, and necrotizing myocarditis; fungal hyphae were present in these lesions. Additionally, lungs had multifocal proliferative interstitial pneumonia with occasional syncytial cells. Some syncytial cells and type II pneumocytes contained eosinophilic intranuclear or intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies, or both.

Responses of laying hens to diets containing up to 2% DL-methionine or equimolar (2.25%) 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanoic acid.

Diets supplemented with up to .6% DL-Met (DLM) or .68% 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanoic acid (HMB, Alimet) acidify the urine and reduce the incidence of urolithiasis in pullets and laying hens.

Acute heat acclimation and kidney function in broilers.

Broilers previously exposed to high environmental temperatures (heat-acclimated) are more resistant to heat stress and consume more water during heat stress than nonacclimated controls. Two experiments were conducted to determine whether heat-acclimated broilers conserve body water by reducing urine and solute (Na) excretion. In the first experiment, renal function studies were conducted at an ambient temperature (Ta) of approximately 21 C using anesthetized 7-wk-old male broilers.

Strand bias in mutation involving 5-methylcytosine deamination in the human hprt gene.

Despite being generally under-represented in the genome, CpG sequences represent a disproportionately high fraction of sites involved in mutational events leading to human genetic disease. Cytosine within CpG dinucleotides is often modified to 5-methylcytosine. Deamination of 5-methylcytosine in situ yields a thymine, which being mispaired with guanine, is potentially mutagenic.

Liquid methionine hydroxy analog (free acid) and DL-methionine attenuate calcium-induced kidney damage in domestic fowl.

To evaluate the possibility that kidney damage may be induced by the commercial practice of feeding high-Ca (HCa) prelayer rations, and to evaluate the protective efficacy of supplementing HCa diets with liquid methionine hydroxy analog free acid or DL-methionine, 12-wk-old female Single Comb White Leghorn pullets were fed one of the following corn-soybean meal-based diets until they reached 22 wk of age: normal-Ca (NC, 1% Ca); HCa (HC, 3.5% Ca); HCa supplemented with .34 or .

Coenzyme Q10 with multiple vitamins is generally ineffective in treatment of mitochondrial disease.

We followed 16 patients with a variety of mitochondrial diseases over one to four periods of treatment (2 months each) with coenzyme Q10 plus vitamins K3 and C, riboflavin, thiamine, and niacin, using independent measures of oxidative metabolism to assess efficacy. There were large (> threefold) increases in serum coenzyme Q10 concentrations with treatment, but no measure of oxidative metabolism showed significant improvement with treatment for the group, nor did any individual patient show significant, reproducible, objective clinical improvement. The results suggest that coenzyme Q10 plus vitamin therapy does not significantly improve mitochondrial oxidative metabolism in patients with mitochondrial disease in general.

Carcinogenicity, metabolism and Ki-ras proto-oncogene activation by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene in rainbow trout embryos.

Field studies suggest that recent epizootics of hepatic neoplasms in some feral fish populations are associated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure, but attempts to induce liver tumors in these species under laboratory conditions have been unsuccessful. Several studies have shown hepatic neoplasma to be inducible in laboratory fish species following PAH exposure at the free-swimming life stage. However, neither the susceptibility of the fish embryonic life stage to tumor induction by PAHs nor the potential of these carcinogens to induce oncogenic point mutations analogous to those reported in feral fish hepatic tumors have been clearly established.

Long-term follow-up of acute partial transverse myelopathy.

We carried out a prospective, long-term, combined clinical and MRI follow-up study on 15 patients hospitalized at the Montreal Neurological Institute between 1985 and 1988 with a diagnosis of acute partial transverse myelopathy of unknown etiology. Twelve of the 15 (80%) developed clinically definite or lab-supported definite multiple sclerosis (MS) by the end of a mean follow-up period of 38.5 months.

AIDS-related beliefs and behaviours of Australian university students.

Parallel questionnaires that enquired into the beliefs and behaviours which related to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) were administered by postal survey during August and September 1987 to two separate samples of students. Each sample comprised 300 students who were selected at random, were aged up to 30 years, and at the time were enrolled at The University of Sydney; the response rate was 70%. Results showed a high level of "correctness" of belief about AIDS and safer sexual practices.

Survival of social relationships following head injury.

A retrospective search through the medical records at a rehabilitation hospital in Melbourne, Australia, identified 38 subjects (within the age range 19-34 years) suffering the effect of a severe closed-head injury 2-10 years post-trauma. In regard to social relationships, availability of post-trauma close attachment figures and looser social networks were markedly reduced for the head-injured group in relation to a matched community control group. However, they did not generally perceive these social relationships as inadequate when compared to a normal control sample.

An appraisal of methods used in the examination of retail samples of cows milk.

The use of the methylene blue test for the examination of cows milk was investigated in an inter-laboratory survey. A poor relationship was found between results of these tests and total viable counts. Coliforms were detected in a large number of pasteurized milks, indicating frequent post-pasteurization contamination.

Emotional disorder and its assessment within the severe head injured population.

This study examined the usefulness of self-report measures of emotional disorder in a relatively acute, severely head injured population (i.e. individuals who had sustained their injuries within the previous two years).

Interrelationships of diet, athletic activity, menstrual status, and bone density in collegiate women.

We undertook a case-control study to examine the effect of nutritional factors on menstrual function and bone density in collegiate athletes. Three groups, matched with respect to age, height, and weight, were studied: eumenorrheic collegiate athletes, oligomenorrheic collegiate athletes, and eumenorrheic sedentary collegiate control subjects. Epstein-Barr virus reactivation in renal transplant recipients.

Renal transplant recipients at Tygerberg Hospital were investigated to determine the importance of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) as a pathogen in these patients. All 106 patients investigated were shown to have EBV antibodies before transplantation and most had serological evidence of reactivation of the infection after transplantation. A mild clinical illness was present in a few patients concomitant with EBV reactivation, which may suggest that this virus has a role in the morbidity of some renal transplant recipients.

Spinal cord ischemia following operation for traumatic aortic transection.

The danger of irreversible ischemic damage to the spinal cord following repair of traumatic aortic rupture has prompted many techniques designed to decrease this risk. Surgical repair was performed on 41 consecutive patients, using four different methods. These included: group 1 (15 patients), left-heart pump bypass with systemic administration of heparin; group 2 (7 patients), heparinized shunt from the ascending aorta to the descending aorta or to the femoral artery; group 3 (14 patients), heparinized shunt from the left ventricle to the aorta or femoral artery; group 4 (5 patients), aortic cross-clamp only.

The microbiology of cooked prawns and shrimps on retail sale.

In an inter-laboratory survey, 148 samples of cooked prawns and shrimps were obtained at the point of sale to the consumer. Salmonellae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus were not detected. Yersinia enterocolitica was isolated from three samples.

Hemi-inattention and the recovery patterns of stroke patients.

A series of stroke patients (n = 31) were assessed at four stages: 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 18 months post-trauma. Significant recovery was noted at 8 weeks, although a trend towards recovery continued throughout the assessment phases. Patients presenting with hemi-inattention at the 4-week assessment achieved significantly poorer levels of functional ability at the final assessment although in some cases the inattention had resolved on neuropsychological tests.
