Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness responsible for seasonal epidemics and with potential to cause pandemics. The decline in influenza-related studies published since 2018 resulted in data gaps, particularly in emerging markets. This systematic review searched for studies in six databases and gray literature sources to define the clinical burden of influenza and influenza-like illness (ILIs) and their associated sequelae among humans across emerging markets.

Objectives: This study quantified the health and economic benefits of improving low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) control in Malaysian patients with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). It aimed to inform policy discussions and healthcare planning for effective ASCVD management.

Methods: A deterministic, prevalence-based model was used to project the annual health burden and direct medical costs associated with recurrent ASCVD events over a 10-year horizon.

Breast cancer remains a significant global health concern, impacting millions of women every year. Maslinic acid (MA), a pentacyclic triterpene has been found to exert promising anticancer effect in various cancers, including breast cancer, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to elucidate the anticancer properties of MA via gene expression profiles in breast cancer cells.

Article Synopsis
  • Optical pooled screening (OPS) is a method that connects images of cells with genetic changes, but it previously had limitations in its ability to analyze complex data in cancer cell lines.
  • The new technology, PerturbView, improves OPS by amplifying genetic barcodes for more detailed and varied phenotype analysis across different biological systems, including stem cells and immune cells.
  • PerturbView has unveiled both known and new regulatory mechanisms in immune pathways, and it can be integrated with spatial transcriptomics, enhancing the potential for comprehensive studies of cellular behaviors in complex tissue environments.

Introduction And Importance: Coral-reef type aortic occlusions are uncommon conditions that can result in intermittent claudication. Many claudicants also have concomitant neurogenic aetiologies and revascularization alone may not be beneficial. These cases can prove to be a diagnostic challenge.

Introduction: Differentiating between migraine and COVID-19 headaches is essential for better treatment. Evidence-based research during the COVID-19 pandemic has found that university students are more likely to experience migraine. Migraine can affect academic performance, sleep pattern, social and emotional well-being if left untreated or misdiagnosed.

Objective: Adults with serious mental illness have high rates of tobacco use disorder and underuse pharmacotherapy for tobacco cessation. In a previous randomized controlled trial, participants receiving community health worker (CHW) support and education for their primary care providers (PCPs) had higher tobacco abstinence rates at 2 years, partly because of increased initiation of tobacco-cessation pharmacotherapy. The authors aimed to determine the association between CHW-participant engagement and tobacco abstinence outcomes.

In Singapore, an ageing population with increasing chronic disease burden and complex social circumstances have strained the healthcare system. For the health system to run more efficiently, patients should be appropriately sited according to their medical needs. In Singapore, community hospitals serve as an intermediate inpatient facility managing patients with sub-acute and rehabilitation care needs.

Background: This study aims to evaluate healthcare systems and pandemic responses in relation to marginalized and vulnerable groups, identify populations requiring urgent care, and assess the differential impacts on their health during the pandemic.

Methods: Data were collected by the Asia-Pacific Observatory on Health Systems and Policies (APO)-National University of Singapore and APO-International Health Policy Program consortium members: Korea, Indonesia, Philippines, and Singapore. Data were collected through a combination of semi-structured interviews, policy document reviews, and analysis of secondary data.

Introduction: The expanding geographical range of blacklegged ticks (BLTs), Ixodes scapularis, and its ability to transmit Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia microti, and Borrelia miyamotoi poses an emerging public health risk. Our study determined the geographic distribution and the minimum infection rate (MIR) of B. burgdorferi-, A.

Article Synopsis
  • A study conducted in Los Angeles County assessed the effectiveness of the JYNNEOS vaccine against symptomatic mpox among men aged 18 and older who were eligible for vaccination between May 2022 and January 2023.
  • Out of 2,171 confirmed mpox cases, 93% were unvaccinated, while the vaccine effectiveness was found to be 69% for partially vaccinated individuals and 84% for those fully vaccinated.
  • Additionally, the vaccine offered different levels of protection based on HIV status, with fully vaccinated people living with HIV showing 72% effectiveness compared to 88% for those without HIV.

Spinal tuberculosis, also referred to as Pott's disease, presents a significant risk of severe paralysis if not promptly detected and treated, owing to complications such as spinal cord compression and deformity. This article presents the genetic analysis of a STB-T1A strain, isolated from the spine of a 29-year-old female diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis. Genomic DNA was extracted from pure culture and subjected to sequencing using the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 sequencing system.

Background: The absence of systematic screening for psychosis within general psychiatric services contribute to substantial treatment delays and poor long-term outcomes. We conducted a meta-analysis to estimate rates of psychotic experiences, clinical high-risk for psychosis syndrome (CHR-P), and psychotic disorders identified by screening treatment-seeking individuals to inform implementation recommendations for routine psychosis screening in general psychiatric settings.

Methods: PubMed and Web of Science databases were searched to identify empirical studies that contained information on the point prevalence of psychotic experiences, CHR-P, or psychotic disorders identified by screening inpatient and outpatient samples aged 12-64 receiving general psychiatric care.

Purpose: Bronchial thermoplasty (BT) is a bronchoscopic intervention for the treatment of severe asthma. Despite demonstrated symptomatic benefit, the underlying mechanisms by which this is achieved remain uncertain. We hypothesize that the effects of BT are driven by improvements in ventilation heterogeneity as assessed using functional respiratory imaging (FRI).

Interactive semantic segmentation pursues high-quality segmentation results at the cost of a small number of user clicks. It is attracting more and more research attention for its convenience in labeling semantic pixel-level data. Existing interactive segmentation methods often pursue higher interaction efficiency by mining the latent information of user clicks or exploring efficient interaction manners.

Existing approaches towards anomaly detection (AD) often rely on a substantial amount of anomaly-free data to train representation and density models. However, large anomaly-free datasets may not always be available before the inference stage; in which case an anomaly detection model must be trained with only a handful of normal samples, a.k.

Objective: Adults with serious mental illness have high tobacco use disorder rates and underutilization of first-line tobacco cessation pharmacotherapy. In a randomized trial, participants offered community health worker (CHW) support and primary care provider (PCP) education had higher tobacco abstinence rates at two years, partly through increased tobacco cessation pharmacotherapy initiation. This study determined the association between participant-CHW engagement and tobacco abstinence outcomes.

  • SARS-CoV-2-neutralizing antibodies (nABs) have shown potential in COVID-19 treatment, but resistant strains have made most existing nABs ineffective, highlighting the need for new cocktails targeting distinct epitopes.
  • A discovery program used traditional methods combined with AI predictions to identify two potent nABs, which were validated through animal testing.
  • However, structural analysis revealed that the AI predictions were flawed, as both nABs targeted the same binding epitope, emphasizing that experimental validation is crucial in selecting effective nABs.

Spinal infection comprises pyogenic and non-pyogenic spondylodiscitis. This condition may manifest with non-specific clinical symptoms, elevated infective parameters and imaging findings that are difficult to distinguish. The cornerstone of a definitive diagnosis and subsequent successful treatment lies in tissue analysis through culture and histopathological studies.
