The McNeil, Biello, and newly proposed PIOPED (from the National Institutes of Health-sponsored study, Prospective Investigation of Pulmonary Embolism Detection) interpretive methods for detection of pulmonary embolism on lung scans were compared in 96 patients who also underwent pulmonary angiography. Segmental findings on 99mTc perfusion and aerosol ventilation scans, chest radiographs, and pulmonary angiograms obtained within 48 hr of each other were encoded along with other information into a data base to facilitate analysis. The McNeil, Biello, and PIOPED criteria were applied to the encoded data.

Ten consecutive outpatients were included in this study. After a seven day placebo washout period, patients were given a dose of 500 mg/day, which was gradually increased to a maximum of 2250 mg/day.

Because of these intriguing reports, we decided to assess the neuroanatomical aspects of patients with PD using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We included 31 consecutive cases with a diagnosis of PD according to the DSM-III criteria, and 20 controls.

A full-length cDNA complementary to the rat pancreatic cholesterol esterase mRNA was isolated by screening a rat pancreatic cDNA expression library in lambda gt11 vector with antibodies against the porcine pancreatic cholesterol esterase. The isolated cholesterol esterase cDNA is 2050 bp in length and contains an open reading frame coding for a protein of 612 amino acids. A 20-amino acid hydrophobic leader sequence is predicted, based on the position of the first ATG initiation codon upstream from the sequenced amino terminus of the isolated cholesterol esterase.

Eight children who had been walking autonomously for 90 to 200 days were observed. A total of 64 sequences of steps were analyzed.

Thirty consecutive lactate-sensitive panic disorder patients were studied with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate the relationship between temporal lobe abnormalities and panic disorder. Neuroanatomical abnormalities, most involving the right temporal lobe, were found in 43% of patients, compared with 10% of the control subjects. Patients with temporal lobe abnormalities were significantly younger at the onset of panic disorder and had more panic attacks compared with patients with normal MRI scans (p less than .

The fluorescent sterols delta 5,7,9(11),22-ergostatetraen-3 beta-ol (dehydroergosterol) and delta 5,7,9,(11)-cholestatrien-3 beta-ol (cholestatrienol) as well as [1,2-3H]cholesterol were utilized as cholesterol analogues to examine spontaneous exchange of sterol between 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoylphosphatidylcholine (POPC) small unilamellar vesicles (SUV). Exchange of fluorescent sterols was monitored at 24 degrees C by release from self-quenching of polarization from the time of mixing without separation of donor and acceptor vesicles. The polarization curve for 35 mol% sterol in POPC best fitted a two-exponential function, with a fast-exchange rate constant k1 = 0.

Pharyngeal samples were taken for culture before and 1 and 2 weeks after administration. Both follow-up cultures indicated that ceftriaxone was significantly more effective.

A total of 2014 people participated from 58 randomly selected clusters. Interviewers elicited information on age and sex of household members, number, date of emergence and location of Guinea worms, and type of and distance from water source in an endemic area.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can be considered a complex entity with possibly different subgroups responsive to specific treatment. This article presents two cases of OCD with self-mutilation, successfully treated with serotonergic antidepressants. The authors discuss a sub-group of OCD patients whose rituals present as self-destructive behavior and are responsive to pharmacotherapy.

Also, several studies have shown neurophysiological changes with PD patients: increased brain perfusion (Stewart), parahypocampal hyper-perfusion (Reiman) and we reported an increased incidence of epileptiform abnormalities. In order to assess neuroanatomical changes we carried out a study with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of P.

Phosphatidylcholine (PC), normally 60% of total phospholipid, was depleted by 60 to 90% in membranes from cells cultured with N, N'-dimethylethanolamine (DME), N-monomethylethanolamine (ME), and ethanolamine (E). Enrichment of LM cell membranes with choline analogues, such as DME-, ME-, and E-containing phospholipids, decreased the transport of [3H]thymidine, [3H]2-deoxy-D-glucose, and [14C]3-O-methylglucose.

In a 8-week double-blind placebo controlled study, 48 outpatients with generalized anxiety disorder were randomized to diazepam, buspirone, a non-benzodiazepine anxiolytic, or placebo. During the treatment phase of 4 weeks duration diazepam was found to be significantly better than placebo and buspirone. Following abrupt withdrawal by placebo substitution the diazepam group showed a gradual relapse maximal after two weeks while the buspirone and the placebo groups did not differ.

There was no significant difference in the anxiolytic effects of bromazepam and lorazepam, both of which were superior to placebo. However, lorazepam-treated patients tended to have a more depressed mood than those treated with bromazepam.

Two radionuclide solutions, technetium-99m and thallium-201, were studied at five photopeak window positions: the symmetric setting and window settings that were 5%, 10%, 20%, and 30% asymmetrically high (asymmetry was defined here by the intrinsic percentage of count loss relative to the symmetric window setting). Low contrast was examined with small cold-sphere phantoms and large cold-cube phantoms to produce high- and low-scatter conditions, respectively.

In a 9-week open label study, seven outpatients with obsessive-compulsive disorder were treated with fluoxetine, a selective inhibitor of neuronal reuptake of serotonin. After a 7-day placebo washout period, patients were given a dose of 40 mg/day, which was gradually increased to a maximum of 80 mg/day. A significant improvement was found in the symptomatology of patients as measured on the obsessive-compulsive subscale of the Comprehensive Psychopathological Rating Scale (p less than 0.
