Transmission of coexisting Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)-baseband (BB) and multi-band OFDM-ultra-wideband (UWB) signals along long-reach passive optical networks using directly modulated lasers (DML) is experimentally demonstrated.When optimized modulation indexes are used, bit error ratios not exceeding 5 × 10⁻⁴ can be achieved by all (OFDM-BB and three OFDM-UWB sub-bands) signals for a reach of 100 km of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) and optical signal-to-noise ratios not lower than 25dB@0.1 nm.

The natural transmission cycle of Yellow Fever (YF) involves tree hole breeding mosquitoes and a wide array of nonhuman primates (NHP), including monkeys and apes. Some Neotropical monkeys (howler monkeys, genus Alouatta) develop fatal YF virus (YFV) infections similar to those reported in humans, even with minimum exposure to the infection. Epizootics in wild primates may be indicating YFV circulation, and the surveillance of such outbreaks in wildlife is an important tool to help prevent human infection.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a public health educational campaign to reduce backyard mosquito-larval habitats. Three communities each, within two New Jersey counties, were randomly selected to receive: (1) both education and mosquito control, (2) education only, and (3) no education or mosquito control. Four separate educational events included a 5-day elementary school curriculum in the spring, and three door to door distributions of educational brochures.

Mosquito diversity was determined in an area located on the southern limit of the Atlantic Forest on the north coast of Rio Grande of Sul State. Our major objective was to verify the composition, diversity, and temporal distribution of the mosquito fauna, and the influence of temperature and rainfall. The mechanisms involved in the p53-dependent control of gene expression following DNA damage have not been completely elucidated. Here, we show that the p53 C terminus associates with factors that are required for the ultraviolet (UV)-induced inhibition of the mRNA 3' cleavage step of the polyadenylation reaction, such as the tumor suppressor BARD1 and the 3' processing factor cleavage-stimulation factor 1 (CstF1). We found that p53 can coexist in complexes with CstF and BARD1 in extracts of UV-treated cells, suggesting a role for p53 in mRNA 3' cleavage following DNA damage.

In the history of the nosographies in psychiatry, the affective disorders were gradually distinguished from the other categories of mental disorders, until being considered as separate illness entities, such as what Kraepelin named manic-depressive insanity at the end of the 19th century. The latter will be subsequently divided in two main categories, the bipolar disorder on the one hand and recurrent depression on the other hand, this separation being still current, and extensively diffused by the mean of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The DSM, whose revisions largely determine the evolution of the contemporary nosographic models, mainly relies on a categorical approach of the mental disorders.

Kindling and behavioural sensitization were probably the first among the animal models of affective disorders, to suggest that genes-environment interactions were likely to be involved in the pathophysiology of these disorders. Cross-sensitization among stressors, drugs of abuse and illness episodes was deemed to be supported by the induction of a series of transcription factors, such as the proto-oncogene c-fos that subsequently alter gene expression by binding at DNA sites and inducing mRNAs for substances that may exert effects over long time periods. This was an anticipation of epigenetics which is currently defined as a functional modification to the DNA that does not involve an alteration of sequence.

We report a case of schizophrenia with partial agenesis of the corpus callosum in a 14-year-old girl. Diagnosis of schizophrenia was confirmed in the longitudinal follow-up and partial agenesis of the corpus callosum was found on brain MRI at the prodromal stage of disease. The prodromal symptom was progressive deterioration of social and academic adjustment in a context of non-specified psychotic disorder in the father.

Yellow fever virus (YFV) was isolated from Haemagogus leucocelaenus mosquitoes during an epizootic in 2001 in the Rio Grande do Sul State in southern Brazil. In October 2008, a yellow fever outbreak was reported there, with nonhuman primate deaths and human cases. This latter outbreak led to intensification of surveillance measures for early detection of YFV and support for vaccination programs.

Introduction: Entomological surveillance has proven to be an important strategy for monitoring culicidae fauna, aimed at predicting the risk of exposure to pathogen vector species. Using two mouse strains with different abilities to generate interferon (IFN)-γ production after Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, we tested the hypothesis that the frequency and activity of regulatory T (Treg) cells are influenced by genetic background. Our results demonstrated that the suppressive activity of spleen Treg cells from infected or uninfected BALB/c mice was enhanced, inhibiting IFN-γ and interleukin (IL)-2 production. Infected C57BL/6 mice exhibited a decrease in the frequency of lung Treg cells and an increased ratio CD4(+):CD4(+)Foxp3(+) cells compared with infected BALB/c mice and uninfected C57BL/6 mice.
