Sabah has the highest prevalence of β-thalassemia in Malaysia, with the Filipino β-deletion as the predominant mutation. Patients with the homozygous Filipino β-deletion exhibit phenotypic heterogeneity due to various genetic modifiers, yet the effects of these modifiers on the clinical phenotype remain poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of the coinheritance of α-thalassemia, I-γ rs7482144, rs766432, and 5'HS4 rs16912979 polymorphisms on the clinical phenotype of homozygous Filipino β-deletion patients in Sabah.

Despite improvements in HIV testing and earlier antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation in children living with HIV through the years, a considerable proportion start treatment with advanced disease. We studied characteristics of children and adolescents living with HIV and their level of immunodeficiency at ART initiation using data from a multi-country Asian cohort. We included children and adolescents who were ART-naïve and <18 years of age at ART initiation from 2011 to 2020 at 17 HIV clinics in six countries.

β-thalassemia is a serious public health problem in Sabah due to its high prevalence. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different types of β-globin gene mutations, coinheritance with α-globin gene mutations, I-γ, and rs368698783 polymorphisms on the β-thalassemia phenotypes in Sabahan patients. A total of 111 patients were included in this study.

Disclosure of HIV status is an important part of pediatric care. We studied disclosure and clinical outcomes in a multi-country Asian cohort of children and adolescents with HIV. Those 6-19 years of age who initiated combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) between 2008 and 2018, and who had at least one follow-up clinic visit were included.

To address inborn errors of immunity (IEI) which were underdiagnosed in resource-limited regions, our centre developed and offered free genetic testing for the most common IEI by Sanger sequencing (SS) since 2001. With the establishment of The Asian Primary Immunodeficiency (APID) Network in 2009, the awareness and definitive diagnosis of IEI were further improved with collaboration among centres caring for IEI patients from East and Southeast Asia. We also started to use whole exome sequencing (WES) for undiagnosed cases and further extended our collaboration with centres from South Asia and Africa.

Primary immunodeficiency diseases refer to inborn errors of immunity (IEI) that affect the normal development and function of the immune system. The phenotypical and genetic heterogeneity of IEI have made their diagnosis challenging. Hence, whole-exome sequencing (WES) was employed in this pilot study to identify the genetic etiology of 30 pediatric patients clinically diagnosed with IEI.

Introduction: Early childhood pneumonia is a common problem globally with long-term complications that include bronchiectasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is biologically plausible that these long-term effects may be minimised in young children at increased risk of such sequelae if any residual lower airway infection and inflammation in their developing lungs can be treated successfully by longer antibiotic courses. In contrast, shortened antibiotic treatments are being promoted because of concerns over inducing antimicrobial resistance.

Introduction: Disclosure of HIV status to HIV-infected children and adolescents is a major care challenge. We describe current site characteristics related to disclosure of HIV status in resource-limited paediatric HIV care settings within the International Epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) consortium.

Methods: An online site assessment survey was conducted across the paediatric HIV care sites within six global regions of IeDEA.

Article Synopsis
  • HPV infections are linked to anogenital cancers and warts, with the 9-valent HPV vaccine protecting against 7 high-risk types that cause 90% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts.
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two doses of the HPV vaccine for 9 to 14-year-olds against the standard three-dose regimen for girls aged 16 to 26.
  • Conducted in 15 countries, the trial involved 1,518 participants, and the main outcome focused on measuring antibody responses 1 month after vaccination to determine if the two-dose schedule was as effective as the three-dose schedule.

Purpose: About a third of untreated, perinatally HIV-infected children reach adolescence. We evaluated the durability and effectiveness of non-nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI)-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) in this population.

Methods: Data from perinatally HIV-infected, antiretroviral-naïve patients initiated on NNRTI-based ART aged 10-19 years who had ≥6 months of follow-up were analyzed.

Aims: To describe outcome and examine factors associated with mortality among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected children in Malaysia after anti-retroviral therapy (ART).

Methods: Retrospective and prospective data collected through March 2009 from children in four different states in Malaysia enrolled in TREAT Asia's Pediatric HIV Observational Database were analysed.

Results: Of 347 children in the cohort, only 278 (80.

Background: There are limited data on opportunistic infections (OIs) and factors associated with their occurrence after highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in Asian children. The use of HAART in Asia started much later than in developed countries and therefore reported findings may not be fully applicable to the pediatric HIV epidemic in Asia.

Methods: Retrospective and prospectively collected data from the Therapeutic Research, Education and AIDS Training Asia Pediatric HIV Observational Database cohort study from March 1993 to March 2009 were analyzed.

A multicenter, retrospective, observational study was conducted to determine prevalence, characteristics, management, and outcome of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) in Asian HIV-infected children in the TREAT Asia Pediatric HIV Observational Database (TApHOD). Data on PTB episodes diagnosed during the period between 12 months before antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation and December 31, 2009 were extracted. A total of 2678 HIV-infected children were included in TApHOD over a 13-year period; 457 developed PTB, giving a period prevalence of 17.

Background: More perinatally HIV-infected children in Asia are reaching adolescence.

Methods: We analyzed data from July 1991 to March 2011 reported by 18 clinics in 6 countries of children age >12 years.

Results: Of 1254 adolescents, 33 (2.

Background: There are limited data on treatment-related anemia in Asian HIV-infected children.

Methods: Data from Asian HIV-infected children aged <18 years on first-line highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) were used. Children who had pre-existing severe anemia at baseline were excluded.

Background: Combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been used for HIV-infected children in many Asian countries since 2002. This study describes survival outcomes among HIV-infected children in a multicenter regional cohort in Asia.

Patients And Methods: Retrospective and prospective data collected through March 2009 from children in 5 countries enrolled in TREAT Asia's Pediatric HIV Observational Database were analysed.

Introduction: We report responses to combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) in the Therapeutics Research, Education, and AIDS Training in Asia Pediatric HIV Observational Database.

Methods: Children included were those who had received cART (ie, ≥3 antiretrovirals) at <18 years. The analysis was intention-to-treat by the first cART regimen.
