Phytochemical investigation of the whole plant of Lepisorus contortus (Christ) Ching led to the isolation of five new phenylethanoid glycosides (1-5), each containing a caffeoyl group, a new flavonoid glycoside (10), and 14 known compounds (6-9 and 11-15, syringic acid, vanillic acid, phloretic acid, diplopterol, and β-sitosterol). This is the first report of phenylethanoid glycosides from the family Polypodiaceae. Compounds 1-15 were evaluated for their cancer chemopreventive potential based on their ability to inhibit tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)-induced NF-κB activity, nitric oxide (NO) production, and aromatase, quinone reductase 2 (QR-2), and COX-1/-2 activities.

The known compounds include ten flavonoids, five terpenoids, three neolignans, and four phenolic compounds, as well as one glyceride. Biological evaluation identified apigenin, 3-methylkaempferol, luteolin, and casticin as weak ligands of delta and mu opioid receptors, exhibiting dose-dependent receptor binding.

Expanding on the discovery of slow magnetic relaxation in the recently reported mesityl derivative 2, this homologous series of high-spin iron(II) complexes enables an initial probe of how the ligand field influences the static and dynamic magnetic behavior. Magnetization experiments reveal large, uniaxial zero-field splitting parameters of D = -48, -44, -30, -26, and -6.

In this study, electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds of polycaprolactone are fabricated in random, aligned, and round-end configurations. Primary porcine annulus fibrosus cells are grown on the scaffolds and evaluated for attachment, proliferation, and production of extracellular matrix.

Electrospun carbon nanofibers (ECNs) have been explored as an electrocatalyst and low-cost alternative to platinum (Pt) for triiodide reduction in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry measurements indicated that the ECN counter electrodes exhibited low charge-transfer resistance (Rct), large capacitance (C), and fast reaction rates for triiodide reduction. Although the efficiency (η) of ECN-based cells was slightly lower than that of Pt-based cells, their short circuit current density (Jsc) and open circuit voltage (Voc) were comparable.

The consideration of botanical products as pharmaceutical agents must similarly go through a rigorous evaluation process. The present work reviews the recently published phase II study evaluating the effectiveness of black cohosh and red clover in a randomized trial with conjugated equine estradiol/medroxyprogesterone acetate and placebo for the treatment of menopausal symptoms.

Rubella-containing vaccines were not included in China's National Expanded Program of Immunization (NEPI) until December 2007. In Shenzhen, women of childbearing age make up a large percentage of its migrant factory worker population.

MDG1, a twenty-seven residue peptide, undergoes triggered folding to form an unsymmetrical beta-hairpin that self-assembles in response to an increase in solution ionic strength to yield a mechanically rigid, self supporting hydrogel. The C-terminal portion of MDG1 contains a heptapeptide (MLPHHGA) capable of directing the mineralization process.

When FGF23 levels are deficient, as in tumoral calcinosis patients, hyperphosphatemia ensues. We show here in a murine model that Fgf23 ablation disrupted morphology and protein expression within the dentoalveolar complex.

The results suggest that a repeat unit that possesses a C(2) axis perpendicular to the conjugation plane is important to achieve a high-mobility. Our finding is supported by a review of literature data: Many polymer semiconductors showing a hole or electron mobility >0.

The aim of our study is to examine the effect of neonatal maternal separation (NMS), an early life stress model, on the brain CRF expression following visceral pain induced by colorectal distension (CRD) stimuli in male rats.
Methods: Male neonatal Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to 3-hr daily maternal separation on postnatal day 2-21, with unseparated normal (N) rats serving as controls.
Electrospun nanofiber membranes surface functionalized with 3D nanolayers through ATRP provide adsorption capacities over 50-times higher than current commercial membrane adsorption systems and over 12-times higher than packed bed resins; additionally, the adsorption kinetics remain 10-times faster than packed bed resins and have over 15-times higher permeance.

Specifically, electrospun cellulose acetate (CA) nanofiber fabrics containing an N-halamine antimicrobial agent of bis(N-chloro-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl) sebacate (Cl-BTMP) were prepared and evaluated; the results of antimicrobial efficacy indicated that the electrospun composite nanofiber fabrics substantially outperformed the control samples that were solution-cast films containing identical amounts of CA and Cl-BTMP. Additionally, the results of trypan blue assay test suggested that the electrospun composite nanofiber fabrics also had excellent mammal cell viability.

The studies of the resulting TiO2-Al composite revealed that the electrospun TiO2 nanofibers with diameters of approximately 200 nm were broken into nanoparticles during FSP; the in situ generated pristine surfaces led to the interfacial reaction between TiO2 and Al and resulted in the formation of strong interfaces between the electrospun TiO2 nanoparticles and the Al 1100 matrix. This was evidenced by the fact that the filler-matrix fracture always occurred on the Al matrix side in the interfacial region.

The hexane- and ethyl acetate-soluble extracts of the leaves of Brassaiopsis glomerulata (Blume) Regel (Araliaceae), collected in Indonesia, were found to inhibit aromatase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the production of estrogens from androgens, in both enzyme- and cell-based aromatase inhibition (AI) assays. Bioassay-guided fractionation led to the isolation of six known compounds of the steroid and triterpenoid classes (1-6) from the hexane extract, of which 6β-hydroxystimasta-4-en-3-one (5), was moderately active in the cell-based AI assay. Fractionation of the ethyl acetate extract afforded seven pure isolates (7-13) of the modified peptide, fatty acid, monoterpenoid, and benzenoid types, including six known compounds and the new natural product, N-benzoyl-L-phenylalanine methyl ester (9).
