Article Synopsis
  • Nutrition during pregnancy is crucial for fetal development, especially regarding omega-3, which is primarily obtained from fatty fish.
  • A study involving 657 women assessed the impact of maternal fish intake during pregnancy on their children's cardiovascular health from birth to age 11-12.
  • Findings indicated no significant cardiovascular differences in kids based on their mothers' fish consumption, although higher 1st trimester canned tuna intake was linked to slightly increased arterial stiffness.

(1) Background: Lutein and zeaxanthin (L&Z) are essential dietary nutrients that are a crucial component of the human macula, contributing to visual functioning. They easily cross the placental barrier, so that retinal deposition commences during foetal development. This study aims to assess associations between maternal L&Z intake during pregnancy and offspring visual function at 11-12 years.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. Overweight, obesity, and accelerated growth during early childhood have been associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes in later life. Few studies have assessed whether trajectories of accelerated growth in early childhood are associated with preclinical cardiovascular measurements.

Background: Urban environments are characterised by many factors that may influence children's lifestyle and increase the risk of childhood obesity, but multiple urban exposures have scarcely been studied.

Objective: We evaluated the association between multiple urban exposures and childhood obesity outcomes and weight-related behaviours.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study including 2213 children aged 9-12 years in Sabadell, Spain.

Background: At the COVID-19 spring 2020 pandemic peak in Spain, prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a cohort of 578 randomly selected health care workers (HCWs) from Hospital Clínic de Barcelona was 11.2%.

Methods: A follow-up survey 1 month later (April-May 2020) measured infection by rRT-PCR and IgM, IgA, and IgG to the receptor-binding domain of the spike protein by Luminex.

Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 578 participants, 9.3% tested positive for antibodies, with a cumulative infection rate of 11.2%, indicating a significant portion had undiagnosed cases.
  • * The findings suggest a relatively low level of seroprevalence among HCW during the epidemic peak, highlighting the need for regular COVID-19 testing in healthcare settings.

The Dynamic Compression Sector (DCS) laser is a 100-J ultraviolet Nd:glass system designed and built by the Laboratory for Laser Energetics for experimental research at the DCS located at the Advanced Photon Source (Argonne National Laboratory). Its purpose is to serve as a shock driver to study materials under extreme dynamic pressures. It was designed to deposit energy within a uniformly illuminated 500-μm spot on target, with additional optics provided to implement spot sizes of 250 and 1000 μm.

Background: Although it has been hypothesized that fetal exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals may increase obesity risk, empirical data are limited, and it is uncertain how early in life any effects may begin.

Objectives: We explored whether prenatal exposure to several organochlorine compounds (OCs) is associated with rapid growth in the first 6 months of life and body mass index (BMI) later in infancy.

Methods: Data come from the INMA (Infancia y Medio-Ambiente) Child and Environment birth cohort in Spain, which recruited 657 women in early pregnancy.
