The thermal gelation of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) solutions has been studied as a function of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) concentration with and without griseofulvin, a model particulate BCS Class II drug by rheological measurements of gelation temperature (Tgel), steady-state viscosity (η) at 25 °C, and ζ-potential. Polymer adsorption on the drug was demonstrated by a decrease in η and potential in the absence of SDS. Griseofulvin had a synergistic effect on gelation which was attributed to an effective spanning of associated hydrophobic polymeric regions through interactions with the adsorbed polymer.

What helps middle-aged widows with their psychological and social adaptation several years after their loss?

This study examines the factors contributing to middle-aged widows' adaptation to their husbands' death due to physical illness, 1 to 5 years after the initial loss. Ninety-three widows and 93 married women, who served as controls, filled out questionnaires assessing their experience of stress and strain, their Sense of Coherence level, the social support they received, as well as measures of psychological and social adaptation. Results show that several years after their husbands' death, many widows still perceive life events and hassles as significantly more intense experiences than do their married counterparts.

The existential function of close relationships: introducing death into the science of love.

Originally, terror management theory proposed two psychological mechanisms in dealing with the terror of death awareness-cultural worldview validation and self-esteem enhancement. In this article, we would like to promote the idea of close relationships as an additional death-anxiety buffering mechanism and review a growing body of empirical data that support this contention. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the sociocultural and personal functions of close relationships, we formulate two basic hypotheses that have received empirical support in a series of experimental studies.

In the present article, we review studies that have examined the contribution of adult attachment style to relational cognitions, emotions, and behaviors as well as to the formation, quality, and stability of dating and marital relationships. We discuss some of the measurement and design issues raised by this research.

Two studies examined the effects of mortality salience inductions on men and women's willingness to engage in risk-taking behaviors. In Study 1, a sample of American college students (N= 101) were exposed to either a mortality salient or a control condition and then rated their willingness to engage in a variety of risk-taking activities. In Study 2, a sample of Israeli high-school students (N = 106) completed a self-esteem measure, were exposed to either a mortality salient or control condition, and then rated their willingness to use various psychoactive substances that were offered in three different hypothetical scenarios.

An existentialist view on mortality salience effects: personal hardiness, death-thought accessibility, and cultural worldview defence.

Employing a theoretical model that emphasizes risk-resistance factors for maternal adaptation, this study compared 80 mothers of children with cerebral palsy to 80 mothers of children without physical disabilities. Results revealed differences between the two groups, and indicated that, among mothers of children with cerebral palsy, self-esteem, self-mastery, and family network size were the main variables that contributed to mothers' psychological and marital adaptation.

Five studies examined the contribution of attachment style to mortality salience effects. In Study 1, mortality salience led to more severe judgments of transgressions only among anxious-ambivalent and avoidant persons but not among secure persons. In addition, whereas anxious-ambivalent persons showed immediate and delayed increases in severity judgments, avoidant persons showed this response only after a delay period.

Does a threat appeal moderate reckless driving? A terror management theory perspective.

A series of two studies examined the effects of threat appeals on reckless driving from a terror management theory perspective. In both studies, all the participants (N = 109) reported on the relevance of driving to their self-esteem, and, then, half of them were exposed to a road trauma film and the remaining to a neutral film. Design: Two-hundred ninety Israeli male patients, aged 30 to 65 years, with a documented first acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were interviewed once before discharge and again 3 to 6 months postinfarct. Sociodemographic, medical, and psychologic data were elicited at the first interview and completed from medical information in the hospital files.

This research assessed the association between parents' reports of attachment styles and their perceptions of family environment, on the one hand, and offspring's reports of adult attachment styles, on the other. The sample included 98 Israeli young adults who completed the adult attachment style scale, and their mothers and fathers who completed this scale, as well as FACES III, and the conflict and expressiveness subscales of the Family Environment Scale. Findings revealed associations between parents' and offspring's reports of attachment styles, which were qualified by gender matching.

The current research assesses the association between spouses' self-reports of attachment style and their perceptions of family dynamics. The sample included 93 Israeli married couples with young children. Both husbands and wives completed the adult attachment style scale and the perceived and ideal versions of FACES III.
