The dynamic interaction between cells and their substrate is a cornerstone of biomaterial-based tissue regeneration focused on unraveling the complex factors that govern this crucial relationship. A key challenge is translating physical cues from 2D to 3D due to limitations in current biofabrication techniques. In response, this study introduces an innovative approach that combines additive and subtractive manufacturing for precise surface patterning of 3D printed scaffolds.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is extensively used to fabricate biocompatible microfluidic systems due to its favorable properties for cell culture. Recently, ultraviolet-curable PDMS (UV-PDMS) has shown potential for enhancing manufacturing processes and final optical quality while retaining the benefits of traditional thermally cured PDMS. This study investigates the biocompatibility of UV-PDMS under static and flow conditions using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).

Subaquatic indirect Laser-Induced Plasma-Assisted Ablation (SLIPAA) is proposed as a laser-based technique for glass processing. In this configuration, a water layer is added between a metallic target and a soda-lime glass substrate, so the processing of the glass is due to a combination of the ablation mechanism, the shock waves, and the cavitation bubbles. Thus, this method makes it possible to produce higher depth structures than those performed up to now by other standard laser techniques based on ablation, achieving structures in glass with rectangular cross-sectional profiles.

Homing of circulating tumour cells (CTC) at distant sites represents a critical event in metastasis dissemination. In addition to physical entrapment, probably responsible of the majority of the homing events, the vascular system provides with geometrical factors that govern the flow biomechanics and impact on the fate of the CTC. Here we mathematically explored the distribution of velocities and the corresponding streamlines at the bifurcations of large blood vessel and characterized an area of low-velocity at the carina of bifurcation that favours the residence of CTC.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has led to a global decrease in personal protective equipment (PPE), especially filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs). Ultraviolet-C wavelength is a promising way of decontamination, however adequate dosimetry is needed to ensure balance between over and underexposed areas and provide reliable results. Our study demonstrates that UVGI light irradiance varies significantly on different respirator angles and propose a method to decontaminate several masks at once ensuring appropriate dosage in shaded zones.

This work describes the radiation characterisation and dosimetric measurements performed on the low-energy micromachining station of the femtosecond STELA (Santiago TErawatt LAser) at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). For this aim, ionisation chambers, solid state detectors, and radiochromic films were used. The results show the emission of pulsed x-ray produced by laser-accelerated electrons from the ablated material exhibiting both bremsstrahlung and characteristic radiation.

Understanding hemodynamics in blood circulation is crucial in order to unveil the mechanisms underlying the formation of stenosis and atherosclerosis. In fact, there are experimental evidences pointing out to the existence of some given vessel configurations that are more likely to develop the above mentioned pathologies. Along this manuscript, we performed an exhaustive investigation in a simplified model aiming to characterize by means of physical quantities those regions and configurations in vessel bifurcations that are more likely to develop such pathologies.

Plasmon resonances are known to amplify the electromagnetic fields near metallic nanostructures, providing a promising scheme to generate extreme-ultraviolet harmonics using low power drivings. During high-order harmonic generation (HHG), the driving and harmonic fields accumulate a phase difference as they propagate through the target. In a typical set-up -a laser focused into a gas jet- the propagation distances amount to several wavelengths, and the cumulative phase-mismatch affects strongly the efficiency and properties of the harmonic emission.

We present the isolation of single attosecond pulses for multi-cycle and few-cycle laser pulses from high harmonic generation in overdense plasmas, calculated with particle-in-cell simulations. By the combination of two laser pulses of equal amplitude and a small frequency shift between them, we demonstrate that it is possible to shorten the region in which the laser pulse is most intense, therefore restricting the generation of high harmonic orders in the form of attosecond pulses to a narrower time window. The creation of this window is achieved due to the combination of the laser pulse envelope and the slow oscillating wave obtained from the coherent sum of the two pulses.

A laser based technique for microstructuring titanium and tantalum substrates using the Talbot effect and an array of microlenses is presented. By using this hybrid technique; we are able to generate different patterns and geometries on the top surfaces of the biomaterials. The Talbot effect allows us to rapidly make microstructuring, solving the common problems of using microlenses for multipatterning; where the material expelled during the ablation of biomaterials damages the microlens.

In this work a method for fabricating functionalized preclinical devices is presented. The manufacturing process combines a laser indirect writing technique to fabricate a soda-lime glass master and soft-lithography methods to obtain the final structure in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The roughness of the device is modified in a controlled manner by applying a post-thermal treatment to the master, and thus devices with different roughness values are created.

In this work, we report a comparative study of the laser ablation threshold of borosilicate, fused silica, sapphire, and soda-lime glass as a function of the pulse width and for IR laser wavelengths. We determine the ablation threshold for three different pulse durations: τ=500  fs, 10 ps, and 20 ns. Experiments have been performed using a single laser pulse per shot in an ambient (air) environment.

We developed a laser-based technique for fabricating microfluidic microchips on soda-lime glass substrates. The proposed methodology combines a laser direct writing, as a manufacturing tool for the fabrication of the microfluidics structures, followed by a post-thermal treatment with a CO2 laser. This treatment will allow reshaping and improving the morphological (roughness) and optical qualities (transparency) of the generated microfluidics structures.

This paper presents a new procedure for calculating the third-order aberration of gradient-index (GRIN) lenses that combines an iterative numerical method with the Hamiltonian theory of aberrations in terms of two paraxial rays with boundary conditions on general curved end surfaces and, as a second algebraic step has been presented. Application of this new method to a GRIN human is analyzed in the framework of the bi-elliptical model. The different third-order aberrations are determined, except those that need for their calculation skew rays, because the study is made only for meridional rays.

In this paper, we study the reduction in the fluence ablation threshold induced by tin impurities incorporated in float soda-lime glass during the fabrication process. The laser system used in the experiments was a Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 1064 nm with a pulse duration of 20 ns. The fluence ablation thresholds found were 112  J/cm2 for the tin side and 920  J/cm2 for the tin-free side, which means a reduction of nearly 1 order of magnitude.

This paper extends the investigation of zone plates to the temporal case. By exploiting the space-time duality between the paraxial diffraction of beams in space and the linear dispersion of optical pulses, we present the time-domain analog of a multiple imaging system. The temporal system is created by using a digital chirp signal generator together with two dispersive delay lines.
