Background And Goals: Professionals in primary health care have to face a large number of patients with pathologies arising out of nutritional and dietary disorders as well as cope with society's growing interest in such issues. For this reason, we have attempted to assess the extent of the knowledge in questions of nutrition and dietetics that primary health care doctors feel they have received in comparison with what they might have considered necessary, as well as assess the capacity that these doctors feel they have to cope with clinical situations requiring a knowledge of nutrition. SCOPE AND SUBJECTS: 250 doctors working in Primary Health Care and belonging to the Tarragona Province Medical Association.

The low-intensity steady-state (254 nm), microsecond flash and nanosecond (266 nm) laser photolysis of some guanine (Gua) derivatives in aqueous solution were studied. A photodestruction yield between 10(-3) and 10(-2) at a base concentration of 75 microM was determined for 254 nm irradiation at room temperature using high-performance liquid chromatography. This yield decreases with increasing purine concentration.

In order to investigate the genomic compatibility between allopatric rodent species, Phyllotis darwini and Phyllotis magister, we have studied several cytogenetic and reproductive features of their laboratory hybrids. Of thirty-one pairings between species, only five were successful, producing eleven newborns. Like parents, hybrids had 38 metacentric chromosomes, except for the subtelocentric Y chromosome inherited from P.

Objective: HIV-1 infection is associated with alterations of several vascular endothelial functions including adhesion molecule expression, growth, and vascular permeability. The bases of these errors are not known, but might involve secretion of the HIV-1 derived transcription factor 'Tat-1'. This study investigated Tat-1 mediated endothelial barrier changes and second message regulation of this phenomenon.

The validity of the Verbal Autopsy (VA) in death due to acute respiratory infection (ARI), was tested in 36 children who died by any acute infectious disease as stated by the necropsy diagnosis, at two public hospitals in Mexico City; the illness started at home. Clinical data obtained through VA were compared with diagnoses of necropsies, which were considered as "gold standard". The presence of dyspnoea for more than one day showed sensitivity of 0.

A study was conducted to evaluate the activity of a single administration of doramectin or ivermectin against severe, induced infestations of Cochliomyia hominivorax. Twenty-four Holstein bull calves were allocated to four groups of six animals each and treated either with saline, doramectin 1%, or either one of two formulations of ivermectin 1% at a dose rate of 200 microg/kg. On Day 12 after treatment, each calf was anesthetized and two wounds were created on the left side of the shoulder and rump of each calf and 2 h later, each wound was implanted with 100 newly hatched larvae of C.

Mass media communication is an important strategy for increasing parental uptake and to promote community participation when large-scale immunization activities are carried out. In Mexico, the National Vaccination Council (CONAVA) launches three immunization campaigns every year accompanied by three vaccination promotion campaigns. This study was conducted to assess whether communication activities to promote CONAVA's Second National Health Week (SNHW) were effective in providing information to mothers about the importance of immunizing their children under five years of age and in prompting them to seek immunization services.

Development of pyrethroid resistance in Haematobia irritans in Santa Fe province, Argentina, resulted in an increased use of pyrethroid insecticides, probably due to lack of suitable alternative treatments. We explored the efficacy of mixtures of cypermethrin and piperonyl butoxide (PBO) against pyrethroid-resistant H. irritans.

The HIV-1 transcriptional regulatory protein Tat is a pleiotropic factor that represses expression of the human Mn-superoxide dismutase. Tat increases oxidative stress, as shown by decreased glutathione and NADPH levels. These redox changes enhance proliferation and apoptosis and alter the activity of zinc thiolate-containing proteins such as Sp1.

The objectives of this study were to (1) determine whether transgenic (Tg) mice overexpressing copper/zinc-superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD) are protected from the deleterious effects of gut ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) and (2) compare the effectiveness of Tg SOD overexpression in attenuating I/R injury to intravascularly administered CuZn-SOD or manganese (Mn)-SOD. The accumulation of fluorescently labeled leukocytes and number of nonperfused sinusoids were monitored by intravital microscopy in livers of wild-type mice (C57BL/6), CuZn-SOD Tg mice, and wild-type mice receiving either CuZn-SOD or Mn-SOD. All parameters were measured for 1 hour after release of the occluded (for 15 minutes) superior mesenteric artery.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is one of the most severe complications of sexually transmitted disease (STD). It can be due to the ascending of normal endogenous microorganisms of the female genital tract or the infection by microorganisms related to STD as Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. PID leads to serious gynecoobstetric consequences as infertility and ectopic pregnancy.

The objectives of this study were to (1) determine the time course of neutrophil adhesion to monolayers of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) that were exposed to 60 minutes of anoxia followed by 30 to 600 minutes of reoxygenation and (2) define the mechanisms responsible for both the early (minutes) and late (hours) hyperadhesivity of postanoxic HUVECs to human neutrophils. The results clearly demonstrate that anoxia/reoxygenation (A/R) leads to a biphasic increase in neutrophil adhesion to HUVECs, with peak responses occurring at 30 minutes (phase 1) and 240 minutes (phase 2) after reoxygenation. Oxypurinol and catalase inhibited phase-1 adhesion, suggesting a role for xanthine oxidase and H2O2.

3'-Azido-2',3'-dideoxythymidine (AZT, zidovudine) is the principal antiretroviral agent in the treatment of AIDS. Although beneficial, AZT remains restricted for human usage because of its severe toxic effects. We examined the AZT sensitivity in transgenic mice expressing HIV-1 one-exon-encoded 72 amino acid Tat (Tat72) and full-length 86 amino acid Tat (Tat86) proteins.

Although circulating levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) are frequently used as an indicator of the severity of different immune, inflammatory, or neoplastic diseases, little is known about the factors that govern plasma sICAM-1 concentration and its relationship to the membranous form of ICAM-1 (mICAM-1) expressed on vascular endothelial cells. Plasma sICAM-1 concentration (measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) and mICAM-1 expression (measured using the dual radiolabeled monoclonal antibody technique) in different vascular beds (eg, lung, small intestine, and spleen) were monitored in wild-type (C57BL) and ICAM-1-deficient mice, before and after administration of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha. In wild-type mice, TNF-alpha elicited time-dependent increases in lung and intestine mICAM-1 (plateau achieved at 12 hours), with a corresponding increase in plasma sICAM-1 (peaked at 5 hours and then declined).
