Melt compounding has been favored by researchers for producing nylon 6/montmorillonite clay nanocomposites. It was reported that high compatibility between the clay and the nylon6 matrix is essential for producing exfoliated and well-dispersed clay particles within the nylon6 matrix. Though solution compounding represents an alternative preparation method, reported research for its use for the preparation of nylon 6/montmorillonite clay is limited.

Evolving antibiotic resistance in Group B Streptococci causing invasive infant disease: 1970-2021.

Background: We sought to define the frequency of antibiotic resistance over time in a collection of invasive GBS isolates derived from infant early-onset disease (EOD), late-onset disease (LOD), and late-late onset disease (LLOD).

Methods: A multicenter retrospective review of infants born from 1970 to 2021 with GBS isolated from blood, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, cellulitis, or bone. All isolates were serotyped and antimicrobial susceptibility testing performed using disk diffusion.

In this paper, isolation and identification of a new highly oxygenated cyclohexene, uvagrandol (), along with the known compound (-)-zeylenone () from the DCM sub-extract of following and assessment of their enzyme inhibitory properties against α-glucosidase, dipeptidyl peptidase IV, porcine lipase, and human recombinant monoacylglycerol lipase are reported.

COVID-19 Contagion Risk Estimation Model for Indoor Environments.

COVID-19 is an infectious disease mainly transmitted through aerosol particles. Physical distancing can significantly reduce airborne transmission at a short range, but it is not a sufficient measure to avoid contagion. In recent months, health authorities have identified indoor spaces as possible sources of infection, mainly due to poor ventilation, making it necessary to take measures to improve indoor air quality.

When Spinal Neuromodulation Meets Sensorimotor Rehabilitation: Lessons Learned From Animal Models to Regain Manual Dexterity After a Spinal Cord Injury.

Electrical neuromodulation has strongly hit the foundations of spinal cord injury and repair. Clinical and experimental studies have demonstrated the ability to neuromodulate and engage spinal cord circuits to recover volitional motor functions lost after the injury. Although the science and technology behind electrical neuromodulation has attracted much of the attention, it cannot be obviated that electrical stimulation must be applied concomitantly to sensorimotor rehabilitation, and one would be very difficult to understand without the other, as both need to be finely tuned to efficiently execute movements.

Background: Personality traits influence clinical outcomes in chronic diseases, but their impact in cirrhosis is unknown. We studied the personality of patients with cirrhosis undergoing liver transplant (LT) evaluation and determined their correlation to clinical outcomes.

Methods: A multicenter' prospective study of adult patients undergoing LT evaluation was performed from January 2018 to October 2019.

Portugal nautical stations: Strategic alliances for sport tourism and environmental sustainability.

Nautical tourism is a tourist product with great development in the European space and a lot of potential to promote and develop tourist destinations. Considering the dynamics of nautical tourism management and the importance of meeting the specificities of this market niche, the objective of this study was to analyse the strategic alliances for the development of the offer of nautical tourism products, namely the strategic goals and sustainable environmental practices adopted by their actors which integrated the strategic alliances in order to certificate a plethora of nautical stations in Portugal. Between September and December 2021, 17 Portuguese nautical stations' application forms were collected.

Reduced Ceftaroline Susceptibility among Invasive MRSA Infections in Children: a Clinical and Genomic Investigation.

Ceftaroline represents an attractive therapy option for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Little data is available, however, regarding the frequency of reduced susceptibility (RS) to ceftaroline among pediatric MRSA infections. We screened invasive MRSA isolates at a tertiary children's hospital for ceftaroline RS.

Student remote and distance research in neuroanatomy: Mapping Dscaml1 expression with a LacZ gene trap in mouse brain.

Undergraduate student engagement in research increases retention and degree completion, especially for students who are underrepresented in science. Several approaches have been adopted to increase research opportunities including curriculum based undergraduate research opportunities (CUREs), in which research is embedded into course content. Here we report on efforts to tackle a different challenge: providing research opportunities to students engaged in remote learning or who are learning at satellite campuses or community colleges with limited research infrastructure.

Hardness of molecules and bandgap of solids from a generalized gradient approximation exchange energy functional.

The deviations from linearity of the energy as a function of the number of electrons that arise with current approximations to the exchange-correlation (XC) energy functional have important consequences for the frontier eigenvalues of molecules and the corresponding valence-band maxima for solids. In this work, we present an analysis of the exact theory that allows one to infer the effects of such approximations on the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital eigenvalues. Then, we show the importance of the asymptotic behavior of the XC potential in the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) in the case of the NCAPR functional (nearly correct asymptotic potential revised) for determining the shift of the frontier orbital eigenvalues toward the exact values.

The MnSOD Ala16Val single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) has shown to be associated to risk factors of several metabolic and vascular diseases. However, little is known about interaction between MnSOD Ala16Val SNP in stroke, a frequent neurologic disease that involves clinic manifestations such as motor deficits and spasticity. In this sense, we decided to investigate the relationship between MnSOD Ala16Val SNP with spasticity in stroke and also its influence on interleukin levels, BDNF, and glycolipid parameters.

Pharmacological characterization and differential expression of NMDA receptor subunits in the chicken vestibular system during development.

Previous studies demonstrated that in vitro preparations of the isolated vestibular system of diverse animal species still exhibit stable resting electrical activity and mechanically evoked synaptic transmission between hair cells and primary afferent endings. However, there are no reports related to their neurodevelopment. Therefore, this research aimed to examine whether NMDA receptors mediate these electrical signals in an isolated preparation of the chicken vestibular system at three developmental stages, E15, E18, and E21.

Development of a Simulation Software Algorithm for High-End Mechanical Ventilators with Functionalities to attend COVID-19 Patients.

More than 500 millions of people were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and in Peru there is an increasing the high numbers of cumulative cases; as well as the hospitalized people, where more than 20 % require mechanical ventilation. This condition with other respiratory diseases cause patients to remain connected to a mechanical ventilator until they regain the ability to perform this vital function on their own. Some prototypes with characteristics equivalent to a high-end mechanical ventilator have been developed.

A Revised Phylogenetic Classification for (Violaceae).

The genus (Violaceae) is among the 40-50 largest genera among angiosperms, yet its taxonomy has not been revised for nearly a century. In the most recent revision, by Wilhelm Becker in 1925, the then-known 400 species were distributed among 14 sections and numerous unranked groups. Here, we provide an updated, comprehensive classification of the genus, based on data from phylogeny, morphology, chromosome counts, and ploidy, and based on modern principles of monophyly.

Genome mining, phylogenetic, and functional analysis of arsenic (As) resistance operons in Bacillus strains, isolated from As-rich hot spring microbial mats.

The geothermal zone of Araró, México, is located within the trans-Mexican volcanic belt, an area with numerous arsenic (As)-rich hot springs. In this study, the draft genome sequence of two endemic Bacillus strains (ZAP17 and ZAP62) from Araró microbial mat hot springs was determined, which were able to grow on arsenate As(V) (up to 64 mM) and arsenite As(III) (up to 32 mM). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16 S rRNA and gyrB sequences, as well as genome sequence analysis based on average nucleotide identity (>96 %) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (>70 %), indicated that these strains belong to the Bacillus paralicheniformis ZAP17 and Bacillus altitudinis ZAP62.

Designing New Sustainable Polyurethane Adhesives: Influence of the Nature and Content of Diels-Alder Adducts on Their Thermoreversible Behavior.

With a view to the development of new sustainable and functional adhesives, two Diels-Alder (DA) adducts are incorporated as a third component into the curing process of solvent-based and solvent-free polyurethanes in this study. The influence of the nature and content of the DA molecules on the retro-DA (rDA) reaction and its reversibility and cyclability is investigated. It is demonstrated that the bonding/debonding properties of the adhesives are mainly controlled by the concentration of the DA adducts, with a minimum thermoreversible bond (TB) content required that depends on the system and the total ratio between all the diols in the formulation.

Use of whole-genome sequencing to detect transmission of group A in Houston, TX.

We used a combination of local, comprehensive strain surveillance and bacterial whole-genome sequencing to identify potential transmission events of group A streptococcus (GAS) in Houston, TX, USA. We identified pharyngeal and skin and soft tissue sources of infection as having important roles in community GAS transmission, including invasive diseases.

Perinatal derivatives: How to best characterize their multimodal functions . Part C: Inflammation, angiogenesis, and wound healing.

Perinatal derivatives (PnD) are birth-associated tissues, such as placenta, umbilical cord, amniotic and chorionic membrane, and thereof-derived cells as well as secretomes. PnD play an increasing therapeutic role with beneficial effects on the treatment of various diseases. The aim of this review is to elucidate the modes of action of non-hematopoietic PnD on inflammation, angiogenesis and wound healing.

Teleguidance for Patient Self-Imaging of Hemophilic Joints Using Mobile Ultrasound Devices: A Pilot Study.
