Expert perspectives for transoral robotic versus laser surgery for supraglottic carcinomas.

Objective: To assess the opinion, practices, and challenges of international key opinion leaders about two minimal invasive surgical techniques in supraglottic laryngeal tumours: transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) and the transoral robotic surgery (TORS).

Methods: Design of a questionnaire composed of seven sections and fifty questions covering descriptive data of participants, practitioners experience procedural sequences, considerations related to airways, feeding, and voice, intraoperative haemorrhage, postoperative management, and a comparative analysis of TLM and TORS in treating supraglottic laryngeal cancer.

Results: A total of 27 head and neck surgeons replied to the survey.

Introduction: Medullary thyroid carcinoma constitutes 5% to 10% of all thyroid cancers. A rare case of metastatic medullary thyroid carcinoma in the parapharyngeal space has been treated in our unit using combined trans-cervical trans-oral robotic surgery.

Laryngeal microsurgery under Transnasal Humidified Rapid Insufflation Ventilatory Exchange.

Objective: Since 2015, Transnasal Humidified Rapid Insufflation Ventilatory Exchange (THRIVE) has been used in general anesthesia for preoxygenation or difficult exposure airway management. Its use offers new opportunities in laryngology. THRIVE increases apnea time and frees the access to the upper airway.

Laryngeal Cancer Surgery: History and Current Indications of Transoral Laser Microsurgery and Transoral Robotic Surgery.

The development of transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) was an important step in the history of conservative laryngeal surgery. TLM reported comparable oncological outcomes and better functional postoperative and rehabilitation outcomes than open partial laryngectomy. TLM is currently considered as the standard surgical approach for early-stage laryngeal carcinoma.

Open Partial Laryngectomies: History of Laryngeal Cancer Surgery.

Historically, surgery was the first-choice therapy for early, intermediate and advanced laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Partial laryngeal surgery has evolved in recent decades and was influenced by many historic events and the development of new technologies. Partial laryngectomies may be performed by open, endoscopic or transoral robotic approaches.

Feasibility and safety of THRIVE in transoral laser microsurgery.

Objective: Transnasal Humidified Rapid Insufflation Ventilatory Exchange (THRIVE) presents obvious advantage in laryngeal surgery and Transoral Laser Microsurgery (TLM). Airway fire represents a rare complication of TLM and may be the most important limitation in the use of THRIVE. The objective was to evaluate the different operating conditions of the TLM with THRIVE with regard to fire risk.

Post-Laryngectomy Voice Prosthesis Changes by Speech-Language Pathologists: Preliminary Results.

Background: In the present study, we assess the feasibility and success outcomes of voice prosthesis (VP) changes when performed by a speech-language pathologist (SLP).

Characteristics, natural evolution and surgical treatment outcomes of unilateral laryngeal paralysis versus ankylosis: A longitudinal cohort study.

Aims: Although unilateral laryngeal immobility (ULI) can results from paralysis or ankylosis of the cricoarytenoid joint, no comparative study exists to date. Aim of this study was to compare clinical features, aetiologies, spontaneous recovery and evolution after surgical treatment of ULI according to its mechanism.

Methodology: Longitudinal observational cohort study between 1992 and 2017 in a tertiary care referral centre and university teaching hospital.
