Introduction: Climate change and its effects continue to threaten the stability of environments worldwide, impacting nearly every species. Although framing is an established technique in climate communication science, little has been done in communicating the climate change effects from an animal welfare perspective.

Objectives: The primary objective of this article is to present the synthesis of evidence in existing literature on the effects of communicating climate change as an animal welfare issue.

American alligators () are an important apex predator of semiaquatic habitats of the southern United States. Commercial alligator farming has grown in the last several decades, leading to a need to understand the health conditions that affect this species to ensure appropriate management and welfare. The aims of this study were 1) to establish and describe normative data including results of common ophthalmic diagnostic tests and conjunctival flora, 2) document ocular pathology in this population, and 3) assess the effect of topical rocuronium bromide and 10% phenylephrine for facilitating pharmacologic mydriasis.

The Arctic warming leads to a decline in sea-ice extent and thickness, rapid warming and freshening of the sea surface which impact the distribution of phytoplankton size composition. Picophytoplankton is an ecologically important component of Arctic pelagic marine ecosystems, and its role may be altered by global warming. In this study, the abundance and biomass, the chlorophyll a (Chl-a) and primary production (PP) of picophytoplankton, and its spatial and temporal distribution were investigated in the Kara Sea during the ice-melt season in July 2019.

Early diagnosis, for which estimating Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) is one such tool, is imperative to help mitigate the negative impacts of this insidious disease. GFR was determined by measuring the serum clearance of iohexol in nine clinically normal, cheetahs managed under human care that presented for voluntary blood collection.

Optimization of Bangladesh and Malaysian genotype recombinant reporter Nipah viruses for in vitro antiviral screening and in vivo disease modeling.

Nipah virus (NiV) causes near-annual outbreaks of fatal encephalitis and respiratory disease in South Asia with a high mortality rate (∼70%). Since there are no approved therapeutics for NiV disease in humans, the WHO has designated NiV and henipaviral diseases priority pathogens for research and development. We generated a new recombinant green fluorescent reporter NiV of the circulating Bangladesh genotype (rNiV-B-ZsG) and optimized it alongside our previously generated Malaysian genotype reporter counterpart (rNiV-M-ZsG) for antiviral screening in primary-like human respiratory cell types.

: In this retrospective pilot study, we aim to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the P-POSSUM and ACS-NSQIP surgical risk calculators in predicting postoperative complications in gynaecological-oncological (GO) robotic surgery (RS). : Retrospective data collection undertaken through a dedicated GO database and patient notes at a tertiary referral cancer centre. Following data lock with the actual post-op event/complication, the risk calculators were used to measure predictive scores for each patient.

Ongoing warming is leading to the accelerated shrinkage of glaciers located on Arctic islands. Consequently, the influence of glacial meltwater on phytoplankton primary production in Arctic bays becomes critically important in an era of warming. This work studies the spatiotemporal variation of primary production and chlorophyll a concentration in the bays along the eastern coast of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.

The small-molecule drug, FTY720 (fingolimod), is a synthetic sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) analogue currently used to treat relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis in both adults and children. FTY720 can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and, over time, accumulate in lipid-rich areas of the central nervous system (CNS) by incorporating into phospholipid membranes. FTY720 has been shown to enhance cell membrane fluidity, which can modulate the functions of glial cells and neuronal populations involved in regulating behaviour.

An individual-based model to explore the impact of psychological stress on immune infiltration into tumour spheroids.

In recentexperiments on co-culture between breast tumour spheroids and activated immune cells, it was observed that the introduction of the stress hormone cortisol resulted in a decreased immune cell infiltration into the spheroids. Moreover, the presence of cortisol deregulated the normal levels of the pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines IFN-and IL-10. We present an individual-based model to explore the interaction dynamics between tumour and immune cells under psychological stress conditions.

Background: Despite the endorsement of intrauterine device (IUD) use in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) by leading professional organizations and demonstrated acceptance and desirability by AYAs, clinicians may worry about the procedural difficulty of IUD device placement in younger patients.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of first-attempt IUD placement in an AYA population by vaginal delivery (VD) history.

Study Design: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients under 25 years old at reproductive health clinics with an IUD placement attempt between January 1 and August 31, 2017.

Techniques to assess reproductive status in adult female American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) using laparoscopic examination.

This protocol describes a minimally invasive surgical technique and approach to successfully examine the gonads of live female American alligators as part of a reproductive examination used in conservation medicine and biology. Best practices are based on examination of over 80 American alligators in the last two years adapting principles derived from other reptilian megafauna species. This protocol is designed for appropriately qualified veterinarians and biologists working in the field.

The canonical NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) pathway involves a priming step to induce pro-IL-1β followed by a secondary signal such as K efflux to activate inflammasome formation. This then leads to the maturation of IL-1β and the formation of gasdermin D (GSDMD) pores that initiate pyroptosis and mediate IL-1β release. In contrast, primary human monocytes also engage an alternative pathway in response to toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 activation, without the need for a secondary signal.

Soybean meal based diets have been suggested to cause gastrointestinal issues in certain species when used as a protein alternative. Using a randomized design, we tested 1,728 alligators in one of 13 communal pens offered one of two diets (seven pens ( = 928) of soybean-based protein diets and six pens ( = 800) of animal-based protein diets) to determine if soybeans would negatively affect the growth, hide quality, behavior and health, when compared with an otherwise identical diet using animal-based protein. Both feeds were nearly identical in composition for protein and fat percentages and identical for all minerals and elements.

Development of reverse genetic tools to study Chapare and Machupo viruses.

Arenaviruses are highly pathogenic viruses that pose a serious public health threat. Chapare virus (CHAV) and Machupo virus (MACV), two New World arenaviruses, cause hemorrhagic fevers with case fatality rates of up to 45%. Research on therapeutic drug targets and vaccines for these viruses is limited because biosafety level 4 containment is required for handling them.

To determine the humane use of slaughter methods we examined the clinical signs of life in 61 American alligators harvested on-farm using one of three methods: (i) captive bolt and spinal cord severance; (ii) electrostunning, spinal cord severance and pithing; and (iii) spinal cord severance and pithing. Loss of consciousness and the six clinical signs of life that can be used on-farm were assessed for evidence of irreversible unconsciousness and death at Time 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 30 min post slaughter.

Methane cycling in the carbonate critical zone.

The carbonate critical zone (CZ) is characterized by extensive groundwater-surface water exchange that leads to highly variable redox states of groundwater. Changes in redox condition may cause either production or consumption of methane (CH), thereby providing an atmospheric source or sink of this important greenhouse gas. To assess how groundwater-surface water exchange affects redox state and CH cycling in the carbonate CZ, we measured CH concentrations and C isotopes in water from streams, spring systems, and wells in north-central Florida.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) among patients with high-risk endometrial cancer (EC) who underwent sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping and dissection compared to patients who underwent pelvic +/- para-aortic lymphadenectomy (LND).

Methods: Patients with newly diagnosed high-risk EC were identified. Inclusion criteria included patients who underwent primary surgical management from January 1, 2014 to September 1, 2020 at our institution.

Diagnostic yield and concordance of image-guided biopsy in musculoskeletal lesions.

Objective: Image-guided biopsy is well-established in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal lesions. While several studies have demonstrated a high diagnostic yield in image-guided biopsy, there are no current guidelines around procedural factors such as number of cores. Furthermore, there have been mixed results regarding which lesions are more favourable to a diagnostic biopsy.
