The concept of "blue carbon" is, in this study, critically evaluated with respect to its definitions, measuring approaches, and time scales. Blue carbon deposited in ocean sediments can only counteract anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions if stored on a long-term basis. The focus here is on the coastal blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs), mangrove forests, saltmarshes, and seagrass meadows due to their high primary production and large carbon stocks.

Decades of eutrophication have deteriorated marine coastal habitats severely and has led to massive decline of eelgrass along European coastlines and impoverishment of benthic fauna. Although nutrient loadings were reduced and water quality increased decades ago, eutrophication in the past had enriched marine sediments in organic matter to an extent that is still affecting ecosystems today. Organic-rich sediments are readily resuspended, keeping shallow estuaries in a turbid state and benthic fauna communities remain low in density and diversity.

Information on the physical and ecological state of streams along with an overview of the need for maintenance is traditionally a time-consuming manual field task with subsequent limitations in area coverage. Here we propose a novel approach to stream monitoring and management using a low-cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) platform to collect data comparable to that from traditional monitoring schemes. This technology provides high-resolution imagery while being easy to implement at a low cost along with providing data that represent the stream in both fine-scale and at landscape scale.

Traditional wet detention ponds and sand filters remove particles efficiently, whereas only a minor part of the dissolved and bioavailable load is removed. To improve the retention of dissolved substances, we tested crushed concrete as a filter material simultaneously with a traditional sand filter placed after an existing wet pond. The particulate fractions (particles, organic matter, phosphorus, and heavy metals) were removed efficiently in the pond and both filter materials, with the concrete filter often being best seen over a year.

The heterogeneous nature of both groundwater discharge to a lake (inflow) and nitrate concentrations in groundwater can lead to significant errors in calculations of nutrient loading. Therefore, an integrated approach, combining groundwater flow and transport modelling with observed nitrate and ammonium groundwater concentrations, was used to estimate nitrate loading from a catchment via groundwater to an oligotrophic flow-through lake (Lake Hampen, Denmark). The transport model was calibrated against three vertical nitrate profiles from multi-level wells and 17 shallow wells bordering a crop field near the lake.

Nitrogen (N) losses from pig production and the recycling of N from manure to crops can harm the atmosphere, soil and ground water quality. This study intended to build a dynamic management model, adapted to the Vietnamese context, that links the N flow at all stages along the manure management chain from the N in the diets fed to grower-finisher pigs to the application of the manure in the field. The model assesses N contents and losses at each stage of manure management so that application of manure N can be adjusted to ensure optimal fertilizer value, while at the same time minimizing environmental damage.

Laboratory experiments with sediments from three shallow Danish lakes were conducted to evaluate the effects of chemical lake restoration products during resuspension. Benthic metabolism (measured as CO(2) production) and carbon oxidation pathways were evaluated in 4 mangrove mesocosms subjected daily to seawater or 60% sewage in the absence or presence of mangrove trees and biogenic structures (pneumatophores and crab burrows). Total CO(2) emission from darkened sediments devoid of biogenic structures at pristine conditions was comparable during inundation (immersion) and air exposure (emersion), although increased 2-7 times in sewage contaminated mesocosms. Biogenic structures increased low tide carbon gas emissions at contaminated (30%) and particularly pristine conditions (60%).

Little information exists on nonreactive phosphorus (nrP) in the water column, because the concentration is much lower than that in the sediment. Here we present a novel method for up-concentration and identification of nrP in lake water: nrP is precipitated with poly aluminum chloride and the precipitate is subsequently recovered and dissolved by NaOH. Additional up-concentration by rotary evaporation increases P concentrations up to 5500 times.

The discovery that the enzymes used in biological washing powders were asthma-causing sensitizers derived initially from the concern of an industrial physician as to the possibility of pulmonary damage due to the proteolytic nature of the material. This caused a search for possible cases of enzyme-related illness.
