Adult-type rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) has been classically defined as a pleomorphic sarcoma with desmin expression occurring in adult patients. To reevaluate this entity, we analyzed a series of 57 cases using immunohistochemistry for desmin, myogenin, alpha smooth muscle actin, h-caldesmon, pankeratin AE1/AE3, epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), S100 protein, CD34, MDM2, and CDK4. In this series, there were 36 men and 21 women aged from 22 to 87 years (median: 59).

Aim: The specific natural history of superficial soft tissue sarcomas (S-STS) has been rarely considered. We describe the clinical characteristics of a large series of S-STS (N=367) from the French Sarcoma Group (GSF-GETO) database and analyse the prognostic factors affecting outcome.

Methods: We performed univariate and multivariate analyses for overall survival (OS), metastasis-free survival (MFS) and local recurrence-free survival (LRFS).

Article Synopsis
  • Epithelioid sarcoma (ES) is a rare cancer with a generally poor prognosis, often characterized by the loss of INI1 expression.
  • In a study of 106 ES cases, INI1 was found to be negative in 86 cases, with similar percentages in both conventional (81%) and large cell (81%) subtypes.
  • While INI1 loss can serve as a diagnostic marker, factors like tumor size and mitotic index significantly affected patient outcomes, but INI1 loss itself did not impact prognosis.

Aims: To study reporting of hypoglycaemia in angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) users, and to investigate the possibility of confounding.

Methods: The French pharmacovigilance database was examined for an association between hypoglycaemia and ARBs or other drugs using reports notified between 1996 and 2005. This association was also tested in patients taking or not taking antidiabetic agents (ADAs) using reporting odds ratios (ROR).

Background: Disproportionality analysis of spontaneous reporting is increasingly used, but it may be influenced in unknown ways by safety alerts (notoriety bias).

Objective: To explore the consequences of safety alerts on reporting disproportionality.

Methods: Within the French national pharmacovigilance database, disproportionality of reporting was tested, using the reporting odds ratio (ROR) and its 95% confidence interval, before and after four safety alerts: valvulopathies with pergolide; tuberculosis with infliximab; strokes with atypical antipsychotics; and rhabdomyolysis with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) [after cerivastatin withdrawal].
