Niobium alcoholate clusters with an octahedral arrangement of metal atoms: [K(CH3OH)4]2 [Nb6(OCH3)18] and [Na([18]crown-6)(C2H5OH)2]2 [Nb6(OC2H5)12(NCS)6].

Complete exchange: [M(6)X(12)] type cluster compounds with an octahedral M(6) metal atom arrangement, which is completely surrounded by alcoholato ligands, were unknown until now. The first representatives are prepared containing a [Nb(6)(OR)(12)](4+) unit (R = CH(3) or C(2)H(5)). They are accessible at elevated temperatures from strongly basic alcoholate solutions of [Nb(6)Cl(12)](2+)-containing precursors.

Morphology, development, and evolution of fetal membranes and placentation in squamate reptiles.

Current studies on fetal membranes of reptiles are providing insight into three major historical transformations: evolution of the amniote egg, evolution of viviparity, and evolution of placentotrophy. Squamates (lizards and snakes) are ideal for such studies because their fetal membranes sustain embryos in oviparous species and contribute to placentas in viviparous species. Ultrastructure of the fetal membranes in oviparous corn snakes (Pituophis guttatus) shows that the chorioallantois is specialized for gas exchange and the omphalopleure, for water absorption.

Survey of PAH in low density residential stormwater ponds in coastal South Carolina: false dark mussels (Mytilopsis leucophaeata) as potential biomonitors.

The distribution of PAHs was studied in sediment and false dark mussels, Mytilopsis leucophaeata, of three brackish stormwater retention ponds on Kiawah Island, a gated residential community and golf resort. Impervious surface in pond watersheds ranged from 5 to 30%. Sediment concentrations were lower than those found in other studies of suburban residential areas, and there were no significant differences among ponds or seasons.

Synthesis of indirubin-N'-glycosides and their anti-proliferative activity against human cancer cell lines.

The first indirubin-N'-glycosides were prepared based on reactions of isatin-N'-glycosides with indoxyls. The products show a significant anti-proliferative activity against various human cancer cell lines. Good results were observed for an indirubin-N'-mannoside which was shown to have medium to high anti-proliferative activity against all investigated cell lines.

Ulnar nerve palsy after open carpal tunnel decompression: Case report and review of the literature.

Open carpal tunnel release is the commonest surgical treatment of median nerve compression at the wrist. Although successful in most cases, there are well described complications. We report a case of laceration of the deep motor branch of the ulnar nerve at the level of the hook of hamate following a complicated carpal tunnel decompression.

Protein kinase C delta is essential for optimal macrophage-mediated phagosomal containment of Listeria monocytogenes.

Activation of macrophages and subsequent "killing" effector functions against infectious pathogens are essential for the establishment of protective immunity. NF-IL6 is a transcription factor downstream of IFN-gamma and TNF in the macrophage activation pathway required for bacterial killing. Comparison of microarray expression profiles of Listeria monocytogenes (LM)-infected macrophages from WT and NF-IL6-deficient mice enabled us to identify candidate genes downstream of NF-IL6 involved in the unknown pathways of LM killing independent of reactive oxygen intermediates and reactive nitrogen intermediates.

Compaction of lactose drug mixtures: quantification of the extent of incompatibility by FT-Raman spectroscopy.

It is well known that lactoses interact with drugs containing amino groups and undergo the Maillard reaction. Lactose monohydrate may also interact with moisture sensitive drugs and affect the stability of the drug. These interactions were analyzed using three model drugs - Thiaminchloride hydrochloride, Nicotinamide and Acetylsalicylic acid - which interact with spray-dried lactose or anhydrous lactose.

Twisted oxygen-containing oligosilanes--unprecedented examples of sigma-n mixed conjugated systems.

Twisting the silicon backbone conformation in oxygen containing oligosilanes towards dihedral angles of 120-130 degrees either by intramolecular hydrogen bonding or incorporation into a covalently bonded ring system effectively extends the delocalization of electrons in these sigma-n mixed conjugated systems.

Five-year surveillance of West Nile and eastern equine encephalitis viruses in Southeastern Virginia.

To investigate the occurrence of West Nile virus (WNV) and Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE) in southeastern Virginia, the Bureau of Laboratories at the Norfolk Department of Public Health (NDPH) analyzed mosquito pools and the sera of sentinel chickens from the southeastern Virginia area each year from 2000 to 2004. Mosquito pool supernatants were screened for the presence of viral RNA by conventional reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Taqman RT-PCR with the i-Cycler. Mosquito pools were also tested for virus activity by Vero cell culture.

Regulation of growth by ploidy in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Some animals, such as the larvae of Drosophila melanogaster, the larvae of the Appendicularian chordate Oikopleura, and the adults of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, are unusual in that they grow largely by increases in cell size. The giant cells of such species are highly polyploid, having undergone repeated rounds of endoreduplication. Since germline polyploid strains tend to have large cells, it is often assumed that endoreduplication drives cell growth, but this remains controversial.

[Analgesia, sedation and anaesthesia in emergency service].

Skilful analgesia is self-explanatory and needs no justification. In contrast to this, preclinical general anaesthesia is of relative value and depends, in part, on the professional qualities of the emergency physician. Analgesic and anaesthestic drugs should be administered via a safe intravenous line.

Identification of a pre-BCR lacking surrogate light chain.

SLP-65-/- pre-B cells show a high proliferation rate in vitro. We have shown previously that lambda5 expression and consequently a conventional pre-B cell receptor (pre-BCR) are essential for this proliferation. Here, we show that pre-B cells express a novel receptor complex that contains a micro heavy chain (microHC) but lacks any surrogate (SL) or conventional light chain (LC).

Evolution of placental specializations in viviparous African and South American lizards.

Phylogenetic information offers an important resource in analyses of reproductive diversity, including interpretations of fetal membrane evolution. In this paper, we draw upon ongoing studies of South American and African lizards to consider the value of combining phylogenetic and reproductive evidence in the construction of evolutionary interpretations. South American lizards of the genus Mabuya exhibit several reproductive specializations that are convergent on those of eutherian mammals, including viviparity, long gestation periods, ovulation of tiny eggs, and placental supply of the nutrients for development.

Deficiency of the adaptor SLP-65 in pre-B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is the commonest form of childhood malignancy, and most cases arise from B-cell clones arrested at the pre-B-cell stage of differentiation. The molecular events that arrest pre-B-cell differentiation in the leukaemic pre-B cells have not been well characterized. Here we show that the differentiation regulator SLP-65 (an adaptor protein also called BLNK or BASH) inhibits pre-B-cell leukaemia in mice.

[Prevention of decubitus ulcer: theory and practice].

In Spring 2001, the Department of Nursing Science, Humboldt-University in Berlin, conducted a pressure ulcer prevalence study on 3012 patients of eleven hospitals. The investigation revealed the use of pressure ulcer prevention on patients with different stages, or without a pressure ulcer. The study also focused on the use of interventions and bed-aids on patients both at risk and not at risk.

Amplification of B cell antigen receptor signaling by a Syk/ITAM positive feedback loop.

We have established a protocol allowing transient and inducible coexpression of many foreign genes in Drosophila S2 Schneider cells. With this powerful approach of reverse genetics, we studied the interaction of the protein tyrosine kinases Syk and Lyn with the B cell antigen receptor (BCR). We find that Lyn phosphorylates only the first tyrosine whereas Syk phosphorylates both tyrosines of the BCR immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif (ITAM).

The adaptor protein SLP-65 acts as a tumor suppressor that limits pre-B cell expansion.

Mice deficient in the adaptor protein SLP-65 (also known as BLNK) have reduced numbers of mature B cells, but an increased pre-B cell compartment. We show here that compared to wild-type cells, SLP-65(-/-) pre-B cells show an enhanced ex vivo proliferative capacity. This proliferation requires interleukin 7 and expression of the pre-B cell receptor (pre-BCR).

[How reliable is the Functional Independence Measure (FMI)?].

The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) is an internationally well-known instrument to assess patient autonomy in Activities of Daily Life. In this article the reliability of the instrument will be discussed by the analysis of data gathered on a rehabilitation ward in a Berlin hospital. The sample consists of 154 patients.

Increased or decreased levels of Caenorhabditis elegans lon-3, a gene encoding a collagen, cause reciprocal changes in body length.

Body length in C. elegans is regulated by a member of the TGFbeta family, DBL-1. Loss-of-function mutations in dbl-1, or in genes encoding components of the signaling pathway it activates, cause worms to be shorter than wild type and slightly thinner (Sma).

Detection of chromosomal aberrations in well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma by bright-field in situ hybridization.

Differentiation between well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and nonmalignant lesions with increased cellular proliferation may be difficult in needle biopsies. Based on recurrent chromosome aberrations known for HCC, we developed a nonfluorescent in situ hybridization technique that allows combination with morphological analysis in bright-field microscopy. Fourteen biopsies of HCC and 31 samples of regenerative nodules (n = 10), chronic hepatitis (n = 10), fibrosis or cirrhosis of unknown origin (n = 5), focal nodular hyperplasia (n = 2), primary biliary cirrhosis (n = 2), steatosis (n = 1), and adenomatous hyperplasia (n = 1) were analyzed with probes specific for the centromeric regions of chromosomes 1, 6, 7, and 8.

Population fragmentation in the southern rock agama, Agama atra: more evidence for vicariance in Southern Africa.

Mitochondrial DNA sequence data derived from two genes were used to infer phylogeographical relationships between 13 Agama atra populations. Three distinct geographical assemblages were found among the lizard populations. The first occurs in southern Namibia, the second is restricted to the western dry arid regions of South Africa, whereas the third is distributed throughout the more mesic southern and eastern parts of the subcontinent.

A Caenorhabditis elegans TGF-beta, DBL-1, controls the expression of LON-1, a PR-related protein, that regulates polyploidization and body length.

Using cDNA-based array analysis combined with double-stranded RNA interference (dsRNAi), we have identified yk298h6 as a target gene of Caenorhabditis elegans TGF-beta signaling. Worms overexpressing dbl-1, a TGF-beta ligand, are 16% longer than wild type. Array analysis shows yk298h6 to be one of several genes suppressed in such worms.
