A growing body of evidence shows that olfactory information is processed within a thalamic nucleus in both rodents and humans. The relaxation from the lowest singlet excited state of the triphenylmethane dyes, crystal violet and malachite green, is studied via two-dimensional electronic-vibrational (2DEV) spectroscopy. After excitation of the dyes at their respective absorption maxima, the ensuing excited state dynamics are tracked by monitoring the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C aromatic stretch. With the aid of electronic structure calculations, the observed transitions in the 2DEV spectra are assigned to specific geometries and a detailed story of the evolution of the nuclear wavepacket as it diffuses on the excited state potential energy surface (PES) and ultimately passes through the conical intersection is developed.

An important determinant of crop yields is the regulation of photosystem II (PSII) light harvesting by energy-dependent quenching (qE). However, the molecular details of excitation quenching have not been quantitatively connected to the fraction of excitations converted to chemical energy by PSII reaction centers (PSII yield), which determines flux to downstream metabolism. Pulmonary and/or tricuspid valve dysfunction is common among individuals with congenital heart disease, and surgical intervention often carries prohibitive risks. Transcatheter valve replacement (TVR) of the right-sided cardiac valves has become a viable treatment option over the past two decades, while continued technological development aims to broaden its applicability to an even larger portion of those with repaired congenital heart disease. To date, two transcatheter valves have been approved for use in patients with dysfunctional right ventricular to pulmonary artery conduits as well as those with failing pulmonic bioprosthetic valves, and are also used off-label in the "native" RVOT and within surgically repaired/replaced but failing tricuspid valves.

Background: Increased recognition of the potentially harmful effects of ionizing radiation has spurred technological advances in fluoroscopes, as well as increased focus on optimizing fluoroscope performance. There is currently little understanding of variability in the dose-image quality relationship across institutions, fluoroscope vendor and/or generation of equipment.
Objectives: To externally validate the CRISP score, and determine if refinements might improve clinical utility.
Background: The CRISP score estimates risk of serious adverse events (SAEs) for pediatric catheterization.
Methods: Pediatric (age < 18) procedures reported to the Congenital Cardiovascular Interventional Study Consortium registry from 05/08 to 09/17 (n = 29,830, 27 centers) were divided into a development dataset of 14,784 earlier procedures, and a validation dataset of 15,046 more recent procedures.
Nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) provides an essential photoprotection in plants, assuring safe dissipation of excess energy as heat under high light. Although excitation energy transfer (EET) between chlorophyll (Chl) and carotenoid (Car) molecules plays an important role in NPQ, detailed information on the EET quenching mechanism under in vivo conditions, including the triggering mechanism and activation dynamics, is very limited. Obstructed total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) involves anomalous drainage of all pulmonary veins to a location other than the left atrium and typically causes significant respiratory symptoms requiring urgent surgical repair. Premature infants born with obstructed TAPVC are often not considered to be suitable surgical candidates due to their size and therefore pose a significant treatment dilemma. Catheter-based interventions provide a temporizing option for infants with obstructed TAPVC, allowing for hemodynamic stabilization and growth until surgical intervention is feasible.

Introduction: CC-002 is a prospective cooperative group study conducted by NRG Oncology to evaluate whether a pre-operative GA-GYN score derived from a predictive model utilizing components of an abbreviated geriatric assessment (GA) is associated with major post-operative complications in elderly women with suspected ovarian, fallopian tube, primary peritoneal or advanced stage papillary serous uterine (GYN) carcinoma undergoing primary open cytoreductive surgery.

Purpose: Common breast cancer chemotherapy regimens are associated with a risk of febrile neutropenia, so prophylactic colony-stimulating factors are incorporated for high-risk patients.
