Background: To evaluate the association of thyroid hormones changes, including increased reverse triiodothyronine (rT3) level, with critically ill clinical patients´ mortality.
Patients And Methods: This study analyzed the observational data prospectively collected over 8 months (2018) in an adult intensive care unit (ICU) in Brasilia, Brazil. All consecutive ICU-admitted clinical patients were included.
Background: Plasmodium falciparum has become resistant to some of the available drugs. Several plant species are used for the treatment of malaria, such as Himatanthus articulatus in parts of Brazil. The present paper reports the phyto-chemistry, the anti-plasmodial and anti-malarial activity, as well as the toxicity of H.

Secondary to its performance-enhancing ability, an increase in oxidative stress may occur, thus prompting concern about its use. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Cr monohydrate supplementation and resistance training on muscle strength and oxidative stress profile in healthy athletes.

After that, these schemes were used to design a new workstation. For this, it was important to bear in mind that the mentioned artifacts contain two key characteristics: (1) one from the designers themselves, resulting from their experience and their technical knowledge of what they are designing and (2) the experience from users and the means through which they take advantage of and develop these artifacts, in turn rendering them appropriate to perform the proposed task - the utilization schemes developed in the process of mediation between the user and the artifact.

Scorpion neurotoxins targeting the Na(v) channel can be classified into two classes: alpha- and beta-neurotoxins and are reported as highly active in mammalian brain. In this work, we evaluate the effects of Tityus serrulatus venom (Ts venom) and its alpha-neurotoxin TsTX-V on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), dopamine (DA) and glutamate (Glu) uptake in isolated rat brain synaptosomes. TsTX-V was isolated from Ts venom by ion exchange chromatography followed by reverse-phase (C18) high-performance liquid chromatography.

Thyroxine (T4) withdrawal or recombinant TSH is used for the stimulation of thyroglobulin (Tg), whole-body scanning (WBS) and iodine-131 treatment in patients with thyroid carcinoma. This study evaluated the T4 dose reduction protocol as an alternative for patients' preparation. Fifty-one patients were submitted to total T4 withdrawal for WBS and Tg measurement.

Voltage-gated Na+ channel toxins are mainly responsible for the toxic effects of scorpion envenoming and can be classified into two classes: alpha- and beta-neurotoxins. TsTX-V and TsTX-I from Tityus serrulatus venom (TsV) are, respectively, examples of these toxins.

Antithyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb) were measured using a chemiluminescent immunoassay (ICMA) and an agglutination test. TgAb laboratory and clinical interference with Tg measurements were assessed. The course of TgAb concentration and disease status were compared during 3 years after initial treatment.

In this work we report the effects of a Bauhinia forficata aqueous extract (BfAE) upon hyperglycemia, glycogenolysis, increase of plasma catecholamines, lethality and changes in serum insulin and plasma electrolytes induced by Tityus serrulatus scorpion venom (TSV). We compare them with the effects of the regular insulin therapy.

Bioavailability models such as the biotic ligand model (BLM) thus account for this factor to predict metal toxicity to aquatic organisms. Until now, however, few attempts have been made to assess the effect of the DOM source on metal speciation and toxicity and, accordingly, on BLM predictions.

Natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) was collected at three sites in Belgium and The Netherlands using reverse osmosis. A full central composite test design was used for one DOM and a subset of the full design for the two other DOMs.
