Background: This study compared the influence of fasting/refeeding cycles and food restriction on rat myocardial performance and morphology.
Methods: Sixty-day-old male Wistar rats were submitted to food ad libitum (C), 50% food restriction (R50), and fasting/refeeding cycles (RF) for 12 weeks. Myocardial function was evaluated under baseline conditions and after progressive increase in calcium and isoproterenol.
Although long-term food restriction (FR) has been shown to induce cardiac remodeling and dysfunction, there are few data on the effects of FR on pressure-overloaded hearts. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of FR on cardiac muscle performance during inotropic stimulation in the myocardium of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Male 60-day-old SHRs were subjected to FR for 90 days.

Methods: Male, 60-day-old Wistar rats were fed a control (n=8), a SFA (n=8), or a UFA-rich diet (n=8) for sixty days. Mechanical function was studied in isolated left ventricle papillary muscle under isometric and isotonic contractions, in basal conditions (1.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify echocardiographic parameters that allow distinguishing different levels of cardiac dysfunction in aortic banded rats.
Methods: Wistar male rats (90-100 g) were subjected to aortic banding (n=23) or a sham operation (n=12). The following echocardiographic parameters were evaluated and used to group rats into groups with similar characteristics using cluster analysis: absolute values and after normalization to body weight of left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVDD) and left atrial systolic diameter; left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVSD); LV weight to body weight ratio (LVW/BW); three indexes of left ventricular shortening (endocardial fractional shortening, EFS; midwall FS, MFS; and posterior wall shortening velocity, (PWSV).
Unlabelled: Epidemiological studies have documented that postprandial hyperglycemia is the main risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. It has been established that glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) provides an integrated measure of plasma glucose (PG) of the last 2-3 months. However, the relative contribution of fasting PG (FPG) and postprandial PG (PPG) to the HbA1C value is controversial.

Male Wistar-Kyoto rats, 60 days old, were submitted to free access to food, light FR (20%), severe FR (50%) and/or to swimming training (one hour per day with 5% of load, five days per week for 90 days). Myocardial function was evaluated by left ventricular papillary muscle under basal condition (calcium 1.

We examined the effects of FR on cardiac function, in vivo and in vitro, and ultrastructural changes in the heart of middle-aged rats. Twelve-month-old Wistar-Kyoto rats were fed a control (C) or restricted diet (daily intake reduced to 50% of the control group) for 90 days.

Methods: Wistar rats were submitted to thoracotomy and aortic stenosis was created by placing a clip on the ascending aorta (AoS group, n=12). Age-matched control animals underwent a sham operation (C group, n=12).
Objective: To estimate the prevalence of glucose intolerance (diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance) in women who had their glucose tolerance evaluated and followed up during pregnancy.
Methods: Over the last 12 years since the index pregnancy, from a total of 3,113 pregnant women seen in an obstetrics clinic, 551 were randomly selected and proportionally to the number of women in each group. Of these, 529 could be evaluated and had been classified as follows: 250 in group IA (normal glucose tolerance); 120 in group IB (daily hyperglycemia); 72 in group IIA (abnormal oral glucose tolerance test); and 87 in group IIB (abnormal oral glucose tolerance test and daily hyperglycemia).
While it is well know that the percentage of stellite cells in relation to myonuclei rapidly decreases in aneurally regenerating adult muscle, the fate of satellite cells in neonatally denervated muscles has received little attention so far. In the present study, rat tibialis anterior muscles were denervated at birth and analysed after 5, 7 and 10 weeks. At least 400 myonuclei in each muscle were assessed by electron microscopy and the percentage of satellite cell nuclei in relation to the number of myonuclei was calculated.
