Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) waste from the shoe industry was repurposed to produce polypropylene (PP)-based compounds, with the aim of evaluating their antistatic potential. Styrene-ethylene-propylene (SEP) was added as a compatibilizing agent, while carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were incorporated as a conductive nanofiller. The polymer compounds were processed in an internal mixer, and injection molded.

Article Synopsis
  • A model was created to explore how temperature and initial substrate concentration affect ethanol concentration using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
  • Regression analysis was conducted with existing data to build a predictive model for ethanol concentration.
  • The model indicated optimal conditions for higher ethanol production are found at temperatures of 28°C to 32°C and an initial substrate concentration near 200 g/L, where higher temperatures and concentrations beyond 200 g/L negatively impact ethanol levels.

Purpose: Isokinetic knee extensor strength is poorly evaluated in geriatric day hospitals (GDHs), despite its potential functional significance compared to grip strength. This study aimed to investigate age-related effects on absolute and relative isokinetic knee extensor peak torque (KEPT) data in community-dwelling older GDH patients.

Methods: A total of 472 French GDH patients (179 men and 293 women, aged 75-94 years) participated in this study.

Purpose: Our study aimed to compare the immediate and prolonged effects of submaximal eccentric (ECC) and concentric (CON) fatiguing protocols on the etiology of hamstrings' motor performance fatigue.

Methods: On separate days, 16 males performed sets of 5 unilateral ECC or CON hamstrings' contractions at 80% of their 1 Repetition Maximum (1 RM) until a 20% decrement in maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) torque was reached. Electrical stimulations were delivered during and after MVCs at several time points: before, throughout, immediately after (POST) and 24 h (POST 24) after the exercise.

The presence of emerging contaminants in wastewater poses a global environmental challenge, requiring the development of innovative materials or methods for their treatment. This study focused on the production of green functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and using them in the adsorption of the pharmaceuticals Losartan (LOS) and Diclofenac (DIC). The efficiency of the methodology was verified by characterization techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to validate the Cancer of the Bladder Risk Assessment (COBRA) score specifically for patients with urothelial variants of bladder cancer who underwent radical cystectomy.
  • Data were collected from 680 patients, with notable findings on the prevalence and prognosis of various urothelial variants, including squamous and micropapillary types.
  • The COBRA score was found to be an effective tool in predicting overall survival and cancer-specific survival particularly for patients with micropapillary variants, supporting its use in risk stratification after surgery.

After a unilateral muscle exercise, the performance of the non-exercised contralateral limb muscle can be also impaired. This crossover fatigue phenomenon is still debated in the literature and very few studies have investigated the influence of eccentric contractions. This study was designed to assess neuromuscular adaptations involved in the crossover fatigue of the non-exercised contralateral knee flexor muscles.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study in Brazil found that out of 147 NSCLC patients, 8.2% tested positive for NTRK fusions via immunohistochemistry, with two cases confirmed using RNA-based methods.
  • * The study revealed that NTRK fusions are relatively rare in this population and highlighted the effectiveness of RNA-based nCounter for identifying NTRK fusions in small biopsy samples, with a low concordance rate between different testing methods.

Article Synopsis
  • Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have transformed treatment for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but better methods for selecting patients who will benefit from these therapies are necessary, particularly through gene expression profiling (GEP).
  • In a study involving 135 Brazilian NSCLC patients treated with ICIs, researchers analyzed GEP from tumor tissues and found that certain signatures, such as tumor inflammation signature (TIS) and IFN-γ, were linked to better outcomes.
  • Patients with high TIS levels had significantly longer overall survival after immunotherapy (29.2 months) compared to those with low levels (15.5 months), indicating that TIS and IFN-γ could serve as valuable biomarkers to guide treatment choices

Microcapsules of ciriguela peel extracts obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction were prepared by spray drying, whose results were compared with those of freeze-drying as a control. The effects of spray-drying air temperature, feed flow rate and ratio of encapsulating agents (maltodextrin and arabic gum) were studied. Encapsulation efficiency, moisture content, total phenolic compounds (TPC), water activity, hygroscopicity, solubility, colorimetric parameters, phenolic profile by HPLC/DAD, simulated gastrointestinal digestion and morphology of spray-dried and freeze-dried microcapsules were evaluated, as well as their stability of TPC during 90 days storage at 7 and 25 °C.

The most common alternative for the management and valorization of rice processing waste is the combustion of rice husk (RH) for energy generation. The environmental risk assessment of the ash generated during the combustion of the RH to obtain energy has remained understudied. Disposal of rice husk ash (RHA) on agricultural land is the most common outcome, which could pose a risk to both natural ecosystems and human health.

This study assessed the immediate and prolonged effects of eccentric-induced fatigue on position sense, utilizing position-pointing tasks, which had not been previously implemented for this purpose. Fifteen healthy adults underwent a fatiguing eccentric protocol that entailed sets of unilateral submaximal contractions of knee flexor muscles until reaching a 20% decrease in maximal isometric torque production. Evaluations of knee flexor neuromuscular function as well as position-pointing tasks at 40° and 70° of knee flexion were conducted prior to the fatiguing eccentric protocol, immediately after (POST), and 24 h after (POST24) exercise termination.

Whole-body vibration (WBV) training programs were reported to improve knee extensor muscle (KE) strength in healthy participants. Unfortunately, the underlying mechanisms of these strength gains remain unresolved. In addition, WBV training was shown to increase the time-to-exhaustion of a static submaximal endurance task.

Oral immunization with the choleric toxin (CT) elicits a high level of protection against its enterotoxin activities and can control cholera in endemic settings. However, the complete B-cell epitope map of the CT that is responsible for protection remains to be clarified. A library of one-hundred, twenty-two 15-mer peptides covering the entire sequence of the three chains of the CT protein (CTP) was prepared by SPOT synthesis.

Ketoconazole (KTZ), a broad-spectrum fungicidal drug, has been a significant problem in recent decades due to its toxic action on non-target aquatic organisms. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate determine the effects that environmental relevant concentration of the commercial formulation of KTZ can exert on benthic macroinvertebrates, more specifically on larvae of the insect Chironomus sancticaroli. Acute toxicity tests with KTZ indicated lethal concentration (LC) of 9.

Rivers in the Amazon have among the greatest biodiversity in the world. The Xingu River, one of the tributaries of the Amazon River, has a length of 1640 km, draining 510,000 km2 in one of the most protected regions on the planet. The Middle Xingu region in Brazil has been highly impacted by mining and livestock farming, leading to habitat fragmentation due to altered water quality.

The mechanisms underlying movement sense alterations following repeated eccentric contractions remain unclear. This study concomitantly investigated the effects of unilateral eccentric contractions on movement sense and on neuromuscular function at the knee before, immediately after (POST), 24 (POST24) and 48 (POST48) h after the exercise. Twelve participants performed sets of submaximal knee extensors (KE) eccentric contractions until a 20% decrease in maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) torque was reached.
