From August 2019 to January 2020 the Brazilian Coast was impacted by the largest oil spill in the Tropical oceans ever since. Paiva Beach, one of the most preserved sandy beaches in the northeast tropical Brazilian coast, was among the most affected regions by the oil spill in October 2019. This area has important reef systems that harbor abundant macroalgal assemblages with very diverse epifaunal communities.

The monitoring of environmental quality in these areas constitutes a real requirement for global sustainable development. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize the physicochemical and kinetic parameters of brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the species Centropomus undecimalis, Diapterus auratus and Diapterus rhombeus and to assess the effects (in vitro) of pesticides and metal ions on their respective activities in order to investigate them as potential biomarkers.

To evaluate the impacts of the industrial area and cargo terminal, three areas were considered: Zone 1, (maximum impact), Zone 2 (median risk) and Zone 3 (reference area). All the biological indices used were considered to be excellent indicators of the ecological integrity of the different sectors of the study area and were especially effective for the demonstration of the critical alterations of the fish community of Zone 1 and Zone 2.
