Article Synopsis
  • - Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a significant neglected tropical disease where the interaction between immune cells and the parasite is key in determining infection and immune response; type-1 T-cells promote inflammation, while type-2 T-cells support infection establishment.
  • - Recent research highlights the role of mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells in VL, showing that they can produce essential inflammatory cytokines upon activation, impacting the immune response to the disease.
  • - Findings indicate that VL patients exhibit more activated neutrophils than non-infected individuals, and blocking MR1 can reduce critical inflammatory markers and shift cytokine production towards a detrimental type-2 response, suggesting MR1 involvement in protective immunity against infection.

Objective: The incidence of thrombotic events and acute kidney injury is high in critically ill patients with COVID-19. We aimed to evaluate and compare the coagulation profiles of patients with COVID-19 developing acute kidney injury versus those who did not, during their intensive care unit stay.

Methods: Conventional coagulation and platelet function tests, fibrinolysis, endogenous inhibitors of coagulation tests, and rotational thromboelastometry were conducted on days 0, 1, 3, 7, and 14 following intensive care unit admission.

Student assistance (SA), regulated through the National Student Assistance Program (PNAES), seeks to meet the basic social needs of university students and is inserted in the field of public policies for higher education in federal institutions in Brazil. The program allocates financial resources in order to provide scholarships, housing, food, transport, physical and mental health, and accessibility for disabled students. The present study aims to identify the senses attributed by students of a federal public university to AE and the relationship between SA and their eating practices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to understand the impact of a dam rupture in Brumadinho, Brazil, on asthma, COPD, and respiratory symptoms among adults by analyzing various demographic and lifestyle factors.
  • - Findings revealed a prevalence of asthma (7.2%), COPD (3.5%), wheezing (8.8%), dry cough (23.6%), and nose irritation (31.8%), highlighting increased risks for women, smokers, and those living in affected areas.
  • - The research indicated that education level inversely correlated with wheezing and dry cough, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to address respiratory health in vulnerable populations.

Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells are restricted by MR1 and are known to protect against bacterial and viral infections. Our understanding of the role of MAIT cells in parasitic infections, such as visceral leishmaniasis (VL) caused by protozoan parasites of , is limited. This study showed that in response to , human peripheral blood MAIT cells from children with leishmaniasis produced TNF and IFN-γ in an MR1-dependent manner.

Background: Coagulation abnormalities in COVID-19 patients have not been addressed in depth.

Objective: To perform a longitudinal evaluation of coagulation profile of patients admitted to the ICU with COVID-19.

Methods: Conventional coagulation tests, rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM), platelet function, fibrinolysis, antithrombin, protein C and S were measured at days 0, 1, 3, 7 and 14.

Introduction: There is a paucity of data on the occurrence of congenital toxoplasmosis in children born to mothers dually infected with HIV and Toxoplasma gondii.

Objective: To evaluate aspects of the mother-infant pairs associated with vertical transmission of toxoplasmosis in women co-infected with HIV in a referral center for perinatally acquired infections in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Methods: Descriptive study of HIV vertically exposed children, with congenital toxoplasmosis, followed at a referral center (cohort/Belo Horizonte).

The aim of this study was to assess the handling procedures of kale and tomatoes in a hospital foodservice (HFS) in order to control loss of beta-carotene and licopene. The adopted measures, up to then not used by the HFS, were: 24-h storage under refrigeration (10 degrees C), hygienizing for 15 min and distribution immediately after preparation. Vegetable samples were collected after reception and after each stage of manipulation in the HFS.

This work was carried out to investigate the pulp composition of four mango cultivars (Haden, Tommy Atkins and Ubá) at the ripening stage in relation to three components with antioxidant potential (total phenolics, carotenoids and ascorbic acid). Total phenolic compound content was estimated by the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and total carotenoid content by spectrophotometry at 450 nm. The contents of beta-carotene and total vitamin C (ascorbic acid and dehydroascorbic acid) were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography.

The aim of the present study was to compare root surface smear layer removal following topical application of EDTA and EDTA-T (Texapon). Extracted human teeth had their cementum removed and were mechanically scaled. A total of 220 root specimens were obtained and were randomly assigned to the following groups: I-saline solution (control), II-EDTA; III-EDTA-T.
