Objective: This study assessed the associations of binge eating, compensatory behaviors, and dietary restraint with the composition and diversity of the intestinal microbiota among participants with binge-eating disorder or bulimia nervosa.

Methods: We analyzed data from 265 participants aged 18 to 45 years with current binge-eating disorder or bulimia nervosa enrolled in the Binge Eating Genetics Initiative study. We evaluated the associations of binge-eating frequency; presence/absence and frequency of vomiting, laxative use, and compulsive exercise; and dietary restraint with abundances of gut microbial genera, species, and diversity (Shannon diversity, Faith phylogenetic diversity, and Peilou's evenness) from 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

Eating disorders affect millions of people worldwide, but most never receive treatment. The majority of clinical research on eating disorders has focused on individuals recruited from treatment settings, which may not represent the broader population of people with eating disorders. This study compared the characteristics of individuals with eating disorders based on whether they self-reported accessing treatment or not, to identify potential differences and contribute to a better understanding of the diverse needs and experiences of individuals with eating disorders.

Digital fabrication methods with concrete have been rapidly developing, with many problems related to component production and material control being solved in recent years. These processes produce inherently layered cementitious components that are anisotropic, and in many cases, produces a weak interface between layers, which are generally referred to as cold joints. While material strength at these interfaces has been well studied in recent years, durability has received less attention, even though cold joints can function as channels for aggressive agents, such as chlorides.

The rapid growth of interest toward concrete digital fabrication reflects the current aspiration for better, smarter, faster, and greener construction means. Among a broad variety of techniques developed by our community, digital casting presents clear advantages regarding dimensional precision, geometrical freedom, and surface finish of the produced elements. In contrast to robotic slip forming, the usage of digitally fabricated formworks requires simpler equipment.

Digital fabrication with concrete is considered to potentially revolutionize the construction sector and is often presented as a means to reduce its environmental footprint. However, at least in the case of concrete, it encounters significant challenges in terms of material design, since high paste volumes and Portland cement contents are normally used due to process requirements. In this article, the application to layered extrusion of a recently developed low clinker cement containing 50% Portland cement and 50% supplementary cementitious materials, such as limestone, burnt oil shale, and fly ash, is presented.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the effectiveness of the Student Bodies-Eating Disorders (SB-ED) intervention, a digital self-help program aimed at reducing eating disorder symptoms among college women.
  • It analyzed how factors like body mass index (BMI), thin ideal internalization, and depression influenced the intervention's success and its long-term impacts.
  • Findings suggest that lower BMI individuals showed greater ongoing improvements, and reductions in thin ideal internalization and depression played key roles in improving eating disorder psychopathology over time.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares individuals with binge-eating disorder (BED) who also have a history of anorexia nervosa (AN) to those with only BED, highlighting differences in symptom severity and clinical history.* -
  • Results show that those with BED and AN (BED AN+) experience earlier and more chronic eating disorder symptoms, higher prevalence of bulimia, and worse mental health, alongside lower body mass indexes (BMIs).* -
  • The findings suggest that all BED patients should be assessed for mental health issues and gastrointestinal problems, as those with a history of AN face significantly greater challenges in managing their eating disorders.*

Unlabelled: The introduction of newly developed blended cements into the mass market is essential to ensure an effective reduction of the carbon footprint related to cement production. To facilitate this process, formulating mix proportions using pastes and/or mortars rather than concrete can be a great advantage. However, for the upscaling towards industrial concrete it is then essential to maintain the target rheological and mechanical properties, something that is all too often challenging.

Background: Data that can be easily, efficiently, and safely collected via cell phones and other digital devices have great potential for clinical application. Here, we focus on how these data could be used to refine and augment intervention strategies for binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa (BN), conditions that lack highly efficacious, enduring, and accessible treatments. These data are easy to collect digitally but are highly complex and present unique methodological challenges that invite innovative solutions.

Concrete construction harms our environment, making it urgent to develop new methods for building with less materials. Structurally efficient shapes are, however, often expensive to produce, because they require non-standard formworks, thus, standard structures, which use more material than is often needed, remain cheaper. Digital fabrication has the potential to change this paradigm.

The heterogeneity in chemical structure of polymers is difficult to characterize and consequently remains an often-overlooked factor in mechanistic studies of functional polymers, as well as in their industrial scale optimization. In this study, we present a method to characterize chemical heterogeneity and apply it to illustrate how it can be affected differently in different synthesis routes. The polymers used are comb-copolymer dispersants used in particulate suspensions which are composed of a polycarboxylate backbone onto which PEG side chains are grafted.
