Cheddar cheese production, structure and in-vitro semi-dynamic gastric digestion: The role of β-casein phenotype.

The objective of this study was to establish the impact of β-casein A1/A1, A1/A2 and A2/A2 phenotypes on the cheese-making process, cheese structure and on the subsequent in vitro gastric digestion properties of the cheese samples. The time required for curd cutting in cheese milk containing β-casein A2/A2 was significantly delayed, compared to milks containing β-caseins A1/A1 and A1/A2. After 180 days of ripening no differences were observed in the level of soluble nitrogen at pH 4.

HER2 amplification in cervical cancer has been associated with worse clinical prognosis and a potential favorable response to HER2 inhibitors. Immunohistochemistry for the HER2 receptor is a universally accepted surrogate test for HER2 amplification, but no standardized scoring system currently exists for cervical carcinomas. In this study, we investigated HER2 overexpression in cervical squamous cell carcinoma and correlated it with HER2 amplification using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and molecular methods.

Effect of a pre-calving injectable trace mineral supplement on white blood cell function in seasonally calving pastoral dairy cows.

Aims: To investigate the effect of injection of trace mineral supplement (TMS) 14-28 days before calving on white blood cell count (WBCC) and function, serum antioxidant capacity (SAC) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in pasture-fed cattle after calving.

Methods: On each of two South Island, seasonally calving, pastoral dairy farms,1 month before dry-off, a random sample of 150 multiparous cows predicted to calve within 7 days of the herd's planned start of calving (PSC) were stratified on individual somatic cell count, age, breed and expected calving date. On each farm, 14-24 days before PSC, 60 selected cows were randomly assigned for TMS (Zn, Mn, Se, Cu) injection, and 60 were controls.

Room Temperature Sensing of Volatile Organic Compounds Using Hybrid Layered SnO Mesoflowers and Laser-Induced Graphitic Carbon Devices.

In this work, we demonstrate chemiresistive volatile organic compound (VOC) sensors prepared by drop-cast assembly of layered tin monoxide mesoflowers (SnO-MFs) on additively produced laser-induced graphene-like carbon (LIG). The SnO-MFs were synthesized below 100 °C at ambient pressure and offer a low fabrication energy alternative route to typical furnace-prepared metal-oxide materials. The additive dropcast assembly of room-temperature operating metal oxide active material allows the substitution of LIG for metal current collectors and glass for alumina, reducing the environmental footprint of the sensor.

Effects of Aging on Patellofemoral Joint Stress during Stair Negotiation on Challenging Surfaces.

This study examined the effect of age and surface on patellofemoral joint (PFJ) stress magnitude and waveform during stair ascent and descent tasks. A total of 12 young and 12 older adults had knee biomechanics quantified while they ascended and descended stairs on normal, slick, and uneven surfaces. The peak of stance (0-100%) PFJ stress and associated components were submitted to a two-way repeated measures ANOVA, while the PFJ stress waveform was submitted to statistical parametric mapping two-way ANOVA.

Active Child, Accomplished Youth: Middle Childhood Active Leisure Fuels Academic Success by Emerging Adulthood.

: Physical activity is an important protective factor throughout life. However, little research has observed the associations between the practice of physical activity and academic success longitudinally, and none have done so with a pan-Canadian sample. This article aims to examine the prospective associations between active leisure in middle childhood and academic achievement in emerging adulthood, for both boys and girls, beyond several family factors.

Search for Time-Dependent CP Violation in D^{0}→π^{+}π^{-}π^{0} Decays.

A measurement of time-dependent CP violation in D^{0}→π^{+}π^{-}π^{0} decays using a pp collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment in 2012 and from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.7  fb^{-1}, is presented. The initial flavor of each D^{0} candidate is determined from the charge of the pion produced in the D^{*}(2010)^{+}→D^{0}π^{+} decay.

The evolution of sexual ornaments in animals is typically attributed to reproductive competition. However, sexual ornaments also arise in contexts where the ornamented sex is neither mate nor gamete limited, and explanations for ornamentation in these cases remain incomplete. In many species, particularly those with slow life histories, lifetime reproductive success depends more strongly on adult survival than fecundity, and survival can depend on intersexual interactions.

Introduction: Outbreaks of invasive subtype C in networks of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) have been reported. We aimed to explore any factors seen in MSM with invasive subtype C.

Method: We searched three bibliographical databases for manuscripts written in English exploring at least one factor seen in MSM with invasive subtype C published up to May 2024.

Impact of omission of routine blood monitoring of stable patients living with HIV during the coronavirus pandemic.

Introduction: The British HIV Association (BHIVA) guidelines were amended during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, allowing for less frequent monitoring of routine bloods. We assessed the impact of this on patient outcomes.

Methods: Between April 2020 and March 2021, routine blood appointments at our HIV clinic were replaced by virtual consultations in 'stable' people living with HIV (PLWH), defined using standard operating procedure (SOP) criteria.
