Background: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has infected over 110 million individuals and led to 2.5 million deaths worldwide. As more individuals are vaccinated, the clinical performance and utility of SARS-CoV-2 serology platforms needs to be evaluated.

Screening for Barrett's Oesophagus: Are We Ready for it?

Purpose Of Review: The targeted approach adopted for Barrett's oesophagus (BO) screening is sub-optimal considering the large proportion of BO cases that are currently missed. We reviewed the literature highlighting recent technological advancements in efforts to counteract this challenge. We also provided insights into strategies that can improve the outcomes from current BO screening practises.

Does education of primary care professionals promote patient self-management and improve outcomes in chronic disease? An updated systematic review.

Background: Primary care has a vital role in supporting patient autonomy to enable people with long-term conditions to manage their own health and wellness. Evidence is needed on whether education and training of health professionals helps support patient self-management and improves outcomes. The authors' first systematic review included only two articles showing patient outcomes following health professional training for promoting patient self-management.

Endogenous aldehyde accumulation generates genotoxicity and exhaled biomarkers in esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Volatile aldehydes are enriched in esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) patients' breath and could improve early diagnosis, however the mechanisms of their production are unknown. Here, we show that weak aldehyde detoxification characterizes EAC, which is sufficient to cause endogenous aldehyde accumulation in vitro. Two aldehyde groups are significantly enriched in EAC biopsies and adjacent tissue: (i) short-chain alkanals, and (ii) medium-chain alkanals, including decanal.

Fish-derived proteins, particularly fish protein hydrolysates (FPH), offer potential as high-quality sources of dietary protein, whilst enhancing economic and environmental sustainability. This study investigated the impact of a blue whiting-derived protein hydrolysate (BWPH) on aminoacidaemia in vivo and skeletal muscle anabolism in vitro compared with whey protein isolate (WPI) and an isonitrogenous, non-essential amino acid (NEAA) control (0.33 g·kg·body mass) in an ex vivo, in vitro experimental design.

Paediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease and its Relationship with the Microbiome.

Paediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the digestive tract, comprising of Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and, where classification is undetermined, inflammatory bowel disease unclassified (IBDU). Paediatric IBD incidence is increasing globally, with prevalence highest in the developed world. Though no specific causative agent has been identified for paediatric IBD, it is believed that a number of factors may contribute to the development of the disease, including genetics and the environment.

Evidence that polyploidy in esophageal adenocarcinoma originates from mitotic slippage caused by defective chromosome attachments.

Polyploidy is present in many cancer types and is increasingly recognized as an important factor in promoting chromosomal instability, genome evolution, and heterogeneity in cancer cells. However, the mechanisms that trigger polyploidy in cancer cells are largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the origin of polyploidy in esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), a highly heterogenous cancer, using a combination of genomics and cell biology approaches in EAC cell lines, organoids, and tumors.

Eating disorders and the orthodontist: Diagnosis, considerations and referral.

Background: Eating disorders are relatively common mental health disorders in Western European and North American populations. The peak incidence occurs within the adolescent years, which correlates with the largest orthodontic patient population. The morbidity associated with these psychological conditions is significant, and has a direct impact upon patient well-being, orthodontic outcomes and the success of treatment.

In vivo safety testing of Antibody Drug Conjugates.

Antibody Drug Conjugates (ADCs) are complex multi-domain biotherapeutics which combine, with the aid of a chemical linker, tumor-targeting antibodies with potent small molecule cytotoxicants (also called warhead or payload) for the treatment of cancer. ADCs are a rapidly growing class of pharmaceuticals with nine FDA-approved drugs already on the market and over eighty at different stages of clinical development, and also an increasing number under evaluation for non-oncological indications. Off-target toxicity and a narrow therapeutic index has been a problem with ADCs.

Refocusing dental care: A risk-based preventative oral health programme for dentate older people in UK care homes.

Background: There is strong evidence for managing the risk of dental caries, notably dose-dependent use of fluoride based on risk. Specific guidance is lacking on higher fluoride use in older people in care homes and prevention is often omitted from dental care plans.

Objectives: To introduce a risk-based preventative approach to existing routine dental care for older people in care homes.

Methods: We performed a multicenter study of dysplastic BE patients after at least one round of RFA.

The aim of this study was to generate and characterise, for the first time, hydrolysates of conchocelis using a specific combination of proteases (Prolyve and Flavourzyme). Hydrolysate molecular mass distribution and free amino acid contents were assessed, and the antioxidant activity was determined using a range of in vitro assays.

The risk of neoplasia in patients with Barrett's esophagus indefinite for dysplasia: a multicenter cohort study.

Background And Aims: Current understanding of the risk of neoplastic progression in patients with Barrett's esophagus with indefinite dysplasia (BE-IND) stems from small retrospective and pathology registry studies. Background: Intraoperative methadone, a long-acting opioid, is increasingly used for postoperative analgesia, although the optimal methadone dosing strategy in children is still unknown. The use of a single large dose of intraoperative methadone is controversial due to inconsistent reductions in total opioid use in children and adverse effects. We recently demonstrated that small, repeated doses of methadone intraoperatively and postoperatively provided sustained analgesia and reduced opioid use without respiratory depression.

The national metrology institutes for the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA) have compared activity standards for Ra, an α-particle emitter of interest as the basis for therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. Solutions of RaCl were assayed by absolute methods, including digital coincidence counting and triple-to-double coincidence ratio liquid scintillation counting. Ionization chamber and high-purity germanium (HPGe) γ-ray spectrometry calibrations were compared; further, a solution was shipped between laboratories for a direct comparison by HPGe spectrometry.

A multi-stakeholder approach to the co-production of the research agenda for medicines optimisation.

Background: Up to 50% of medicines are not used as intended, resulting in poor health and economic outcomes. Medicines optimisation is 'a person-centred approach to safe and effective medicines use, to ensure people obtain the best possible outcomes from their medicines'. The purpose of this exercise was to co-produce a prioritised research agenda for medicines optimisation using a multi-stakeholder (patient, researcher, public and health professionals) approach.

However, relatively few studies have examined the mechanism(s) of Cd-induced hyperglycemia. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of pancreatic islets in Cd-induced hyperglycemia.

Healthcare worker seroconversion for SARS-CoV-2 at two large health systems in San Diego.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 infections among healthcare workers were widely reported in China and Europe as the pandemic expanded to the United States. In order to examine the infection rate among these essential workers, we combined results of SARS-CoV-2 serology testing offered free to healthcare workers at two large San Diego health systems when the antibody assays first became available.

Alterations in the Ca toolkit in oesophageal adenocarcinoma.

Aim: To investigate alterations in transcription of genes, encoding Ca toolkit proteins, in oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) and to assess associations between gene expression, tumor grade, nodal-metastatic stage, and patient survival.

Methods: The expression of 275 transcripts, encoding components of the Ca toolkit, was analyzed in two OAC datasets: the Cancer Genome Atlas [via the University of Alabama Cancer (UALCAN) portal] and the oesophageal-cancer, clinical, and molecular stratification [Oesophageal Cancer Clinical and Molecular Stratification (OCCAMS)] dataset. Effects of differential expression of these genes on patient survival were determined using Kaplan-Meier log-rank tests.
