Introduction: Anorectal malformations (ARMs) are birth defects that affect the rectum, anus, and surrounding structures. While genetic and environmental factors may contribute to the risk of developing ARMs, the exact causes are largely unknown. Notably, there is a lack of research investigating predisposing factors for ARMs within the Ethiopian population, despite the burden of this condition in the country.

Background: Posterior urethral valve  (PUV) is the most common cause of congenital lower urinary tract obstruction in boys. It is considered that early diagnosis and intervention have good outcomes in terms of renal function, though the varying extent of embryological insult requires these boys to remain in extended follow-up and care.

Objective: To assess the renal outcome of patients following PUV ablation.

Article Synopsis
  • Thrombocytopenia is a common blood disorder in newborns, particularly those in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) who have surgical issues, with an incidence of 55.8% among 210 studied neonates.
  • Most cases of thrombocytopenia occurred later in life, with significant factors linked to its development being the presence of sepsis and atresia.
  • Longer non-feeding hours were associated with thrombocytopenic neonates, highlighting the need for focused prevention strategies against neonatal sepsis.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the prevalence and risk factors for Surgical Site Infection (SSI) and wound dehiscence in pediatric patients undergoing laparotomy at a hospital in Ethiopia.
  • The research included 114 pediatric surgical patients from December 2017 to May 2018, revealing a 21.05% SSI rate and identifying key risk factors such as the timing of antibiotics and duration of surgery.
  • Findings suggest that both SSI and wound dehiscence are prevalent complications, with specific antibiotic usage, surgical time, and patient malnutrition being significant predictors of these outcomes.

Background: Congenital anterior urethral diverticulum is a rare cause of urinary obstruction in children. Its association with posterior urethral valve is an exceedingly unusual occurrence.

Case Presentation: 18 month old male child for whom cystoscopic valve ablation was done for posterior urethral valve continued to have obstructive symptoms for which VCUG was done and revealed congenital anterior urethral diverticula.
