Rumination behavior in cattle can provide valuable information for monitoring health status and animal welfare, but continuous monitoring is essential to detect changes in rumination behavior. In a previous study validating the use of a respiration rate sensor equipped with a triaxial accelerometer, the regurgitation process was also clearly visible in the pressure and accelerometer data. The aim of the present study, therefore, was to measure the individual lengths of rumination cycles and to validate whether the sensor data showed the same number of regurgitations as those counted visually (video or direct observation).

Dominant remodelling of cattle rumen microbiome by (tall fescue) KY-31 carrying a fungal endophyte.

Tall fescue KY-31 is an important primary forage for beef cattle. It carries a fungal endophyte that produces ergovaline, the main cause of tall fescue toxicosis that leads to major revenue loss for livestock producers. The MaxQ, an engineered cultivar, hosts an ergovaline nonproducing strain of the fungus and consequently is nontoxic.

Objective: To assess safety and clinical outcomes in patients with inflammatory arthritis after intraarticular (IA) injection of rAAV2-TNFR:Fc, a recombinant adeno-associated viral vector containing the human tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor-immunoglobulin (IgG1) Fc fusion (TNFR:Fc) gene.

Methods: In this phase 1/2 randomized study, adults with persistent moderate or severe inflammation in a target joint, being treated with or without systemic anti-TNF therapy, received a single IA injection of either rAAV2-TNFR:Fc (1 x 10(11), 1 x 10(12), or 1 x 10(13) DNase-resistant particles/ml joint volume) or placebo, followed by open-label rAAV2-TNFR:Fc 12-30 weeks later, depending on when the target joint met predetermined criteria for reinjection.

Results: 127 subjects received the first injection of blinded study drug; 95 subjects received open-label rAAV2-TNFR:Fc.

Background: The weaning process in beef calves elicits physiological stress responses that can negatively affect performance and health. Supplementation of vitamins and minerals, particularly selenium (Se) and vitamin E, might be warranted.

Hypothesis: That parenteral administration of Se or vitamin E would correct or prevent deficiencies of these nutrients in postweaned beef calves during a backgrounding period (42 days after weaning).

Intravenous zoledronic acid 5 mg in the treatment of postmenopausal women with low bone density previously treated with alendronate.

This randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, multicenter trial assessed safety and efficacy of a single dose of IV zoledronic acid (ZOL) 5 mg vs. oral alendronate (ALN) 70 mg weekly in postmenopausal women with low bone mineral density (BMD) who had previously been treated with ALN. Postmenopausal women who were receiving oral ALN for at least 1 year immediately prior to randomization and with lumbar spine or femoral neck BMD T-score values < or = -2.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the direction of gaze influences the kinematics of the squat exercise. Ten men experienced in the squat exercise performed a total of 30 repetitions of the squat in the form of 2 sets of 5 repetitions under 3 different conditions. Conditions varied with respect to the direction of the subjects' gaze as they performed the exercise.

No linkage or association of telomeric and centromeric T-cell receptor beta-chain markers with susceptibility to type 1 insulin-dependent diabetes in HLA-DR4 multiplex families.

The T-cell receptor beta locus (TCRB) on chromosome 7q35 was studied as a candidate region for genetic susceptibility to type 1 insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM). A highly polymorphic microsatellite marker mapping to the TCRBV6.7 gene and a TCRB C-region RFLP were used to genotype the members of a total of 21 multiplex IDDM families from two different geographical areas.

Axial skeletal changes in paralysed patients may mimic ankylosing spondylitis.

Patients with paralysis may develop radiographic changes in the axial skeleton and sacroiliac joints that resemble those seen in ankylosing spondylitis. These similarities can result in confusion when evaluating paralysed patients with back pain. We report on a patient with paralysis secondary to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis who developed back pain, apparent sacroiliac joint fusion, and a 'bamboo spine', leading to the misdiagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis.

Zinc-induced sideroblastic anemia: report of a case, review of the literature, and description of the hematologic syndrome.

Zinc ingestion has become increasingly popular in the lay and food faddist population. Herein described by way of a case report and review of the 13 cases in the literature is the syndrome of severe anemia associated with excessive and prolonged intake of oral zinc. The syndrome is characterized by anemia, granulocytopenia, and bone marrow findings of vacuolated precursors and ringed sideroblasts.
