Biopotential sensing technology with electrodes has a great future in medical treatment and human-machine interface, whereas comfort and longevity are two significant problems during usage. Noncontact electrode is a promising alternative to achieve more comfortable and long term biopotential signal recordings than contact electrode. However, it could pick up a significantly higher level of common-mode (CM) noise, which is hardly solved with passive filtering.

While opioids constitute the major component of perioperative analgesic regimens for surgery in general, a variety of evidence points to an association between perioperative opioid exposure and longer term oncologic outcomes. The mechanistic details underlying these effects are not well understood. In this study, we focused on clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and utilized RNA sequencing and outcome data from both The Cancer Genome Atlas, as well as a local patient cohort to identify survival-associated gene coexpression networks.

The white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris) is the largest Brazilian marsupial and a great example of animal synanthropy. Considering the high potential as a carrier of viruses originating from environmental contamination, the presence of Human adenovirus (AdV) and rotavirus was investigated in the feces of rescued white-eared opossums, which were in the process of rehabilitation. The feces of 49 animals were initially investigated by immunochromatography, with three samples positive for AdV and one sample positive for rotavirus.

Background: Opioid-induced immunomodulation may be of particular importance in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) where an immune response is associated with improved outcome and response to immunotherapy. We evaluated the association between intraoperative opioids and oncological outcomes and explored patterns of opioid receptor expression in TNBC.

Methods: Consecutive patients with stage I-III primary TNBC were identified from a prospectively maintained database.

Background: Many practices require tissues from hip and knee arthroplasty procedures to be sent for pathologic examination. These examinations rarely provide information beyond the clinical or radiologic diagnosis and rarely alter clinical management. We aimed to determine the rate at which histologic diagnoses based on gross assessment alone or gross plus microscopic assessment correspond with reported clinical diagnoses in patients undergoing total joint arthroplasties and whether the histologic diagnoses alter patient management.

China's Hengduan Mountain region has been considered one of the most diverse regions in the northern hemisphere. Its stunning topography with many deep valleys and impassable mountain barriers has promoted an astonishing diversification in many groups of organisms including plants, birds, mammals, and amphibians. However, the insect biodiversity in this region is still poorly known.

Monitoring of the adequacy of myocardial protection with cardioplegia is nearly non-existent in clinical cardiac surgical practice and instead relies on well-defined protocols for delivery of cardioplegia often resulting in inadequate protection. We hypothesized that Near Infrared Spectroscopy technology could be useful in the monitoring of the myocardial oxygen state by attaching the monitors to the epicardium in a porcine model of cardiac surgery. The experiments were conducted with 3 different protocols of 2 pigs each for a total of 6 pigs.

The retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) is a fibrous tissue that shows form birefringence. This optical tissue property is related to the microstructure of the nerve fiber axons that carry electrical signals from the retina to the brain. Ocular diseases that are known to cause neurologic changes, like glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy (DR), might alter the birefringence of the RNFL, which could be used for diagnostic purposes.

Background: Most adults are not achieving recommended levels of physical activity (150 minutes/week, moderate-to-vigorous intensity). Inadequate activity levels are associated with numerous poor health outcomes, and clinical recommendations endorse physical activity in the front-line treatment of obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. A framework for physical activity prescription and referral has been developed, but has not been widely implemented.

Pathology has been mostly invisible for the public. The missing recognition affects the pathologists' reputation, and efforts with recruitment and advocacy. Our survey with 387 respondents confirms that the public knowledge on the role of the pathologists has not improved despite campaigns and advocacy efforts.

Background: Explanations for the ecological dominance of ants generally focus on the benefits of division of labour and cooperation during foraging. However, the principal innovation of ants relative to their wasp ancestors was the evolution of a new phenotype: a wingless worker caste optimized for ground labour. Ant workers are famous for their ability to lift and carry heavy loads, but we know surprisingly little about the morphological basis of their strength.

Adaptive features of natural killer (NK) cells have been reported in various species with different underlying mechanisms. It is unclear, however, which NK cell populations are capable of mounting antigen-specific recall responses and how such functions are regulated at the molecular level. Here, we identify and characterize a discrete population of CD49aCD16 NK cells in the human liver that displays increased epigenetic potential to elicit memory responses and has the functional properties to exert antigen-specific immunity in the skin as an effector site.

Filamentous fungi differentiate along complex developmental programs directed by abiotic and biotic signals. Currently, intrinsic signals that govern fungal development remain largely unknown. Here we show that an endogenously produced and secreted fungal oxylipin, 5,8-diHODE, induces fungal cellular differentiation, including lateral branching in pathogenic Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus flavus, and appressorium formation in the rice blast pathogen Magnaporthe grisea.

Elevated serum lactate dehydrogenase (sLDH) is associated with poor clinical outcomes in patients with stage IV metastatic melanoma (MM). It is currently unknown if sLDH elevation correlates with distinct molecular, metabolic, or immune features of melanoma metastases. The identification of such features may identify rational therapeutic strategies for patients with elevated sLDH.

This study aims to compare the immunogenicity of fresh decellularized with cryopreserved native heart valve allografts to identify potential immunological risks in subsequent organ transplantations. We measured the induction of allogeneic HLA class I and II specific antibodies and characterized donor-specific antibodies by Luminex-based single beads assay in both groups. Serum samples were collected before valve replacement, at 3 and 24 months postoperatively.

While quality programs have been shown to improve provider compliance, few have demonstrated conclusive improvements in patient outcomes. We hypothesized that there would be increased metric compliance and decreased postoperative complications after initiation of an anesthesiology quality improvement program at our institution. We performed a retrospective study of all adult inpatients having anesthesia for a twelve-month period that spanned six months before and after program implementation.

Phenotypic traits are often integrated into evolutionary modules: sets of organismal parts that evolve together. In social insect colonies, the concepts of integration and modularity apply to sets of traits both within and among functionally and phenotypically differentiated castes. On macroevolutionary timescales, patterns of integration and modularity within and across castes can be clues to the selective and ecological factors shaping their evolution and diversification.
