Magnitude of terminological bias in international health services research: a disambiguation analysis in mental health.

Aims: Health services research (HSR) is affected by a widespread problem related to service terminology including non-commensurability (using different units of analysis for comparisons) and terminological unclarity due to ambiguity and vagueness of terms. The aim of this study was to identify the magnitude of the terminological bias in health and social services research and health economics by applying an international classification system.

Methods: This study, that was part of the PECUNIA project, followed an ontoterminology approach (disambiguation of technical and scientific terms using a taxonomy and a glossary of terms).

Diving into the vertical dimension of elasmobranch movement ecology.

Knowledge of the three-dimensional movement patterns of elasmobranchs is vital to understand their ecological roles and exposure to anthropogenic pressures. To date, comparative studies among species at global scales have mostly focused on horizontal movements. Our study addresses the knowledge gap of vertical movements by compiling the first global synthesis of vertical habitat use by elasmobranchs from data obtained by deployment of 989 biotelemetry tags on 38 elasmobranch species.

Nonproductive exposure of PBMCs to SARS-CoV-2 induces cell-intrinsic innate immune responses.

Cell-intrinsic responses mounted in PBMCs during mild and severe COVID-19 differ quantitatively and qualitatively. Whether they are triggered by signals emitted by productively infected cells of the respiratory tract or result from physical interaction with virus particles remains unclear. Here, we analyzed susceptibility and expression profiles of PBMCs from healthy donors upon ex vivo exposure to SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2.

Evaluation of Health-related Quality of Life Improvement in Patients Undergoing Cervical Versus Shoulder Surgery.

Summary Of Background Data: An understanding of outcome differences between different types of orthopedic surgeries is helpful in counseling patients about expected postoperative recovery.

Self- versus informant-report of cognitive decline in mild cognitive impairment: Concordance with cognitive and functional performance.

Objective: Debate continues regarding the use of self- versus informant-report to diagnose mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with studies reporting patients both overestimating and underestimating their abilities relative to informants. We assessed concordance of self- versus informant-report of cognitive decline with objective cognitive and functional performance in the participants of the preventing Alzheimer's dementia with cognitive remediation plus transcranial direct current stimulation in mild cognitive impairment and depression randomized controlled trial (PACt-MD).

Method: Three hundred six participants with MCI, and their informants, reported on cognitive decline; the participants also completed a comprehensive assessment of objective cognitive and functional performance.

Basic Determinants of Disease Knowledge in COPD Patients: Results from COSYCONET.

Introduction: In many chronic diseases, including COPD, the patients' basic knowledge of the disorder has been shown to be relevant for the course of the disease. We studied which clinical and functional characteristics were related to this knowledge as well as the patients' satisfaction with their knowledge about COPD.

Methods: The study population comprised 645 patients of GOLD grades 1-4 who participated in Visit 6 of the COSYCONET cohort (COPD and Systemic Consequences - Comorbidities Network).

Harmonization issues in unit costing of service use for multi-country, multi-sectoral health economic evaluations: a scoping review.

Background: Valuation is a critical part of the costing process in health economic evaluations. However, an overview of specific issues relevant to the European context on harmonizing methodological requirements for the valuation of costs to be used in health economic evaluation is lacking. We aimed to inform the development of an international, harmonized and multi-sectoral costing framework, as sought in the European PECUNIA (ProgrammE in Costing, resource use measurement and outcome valuation for Use in multi-sectoral National and International health economic evaluAtions) project.

Fully automated background phase correction using M-estimate SAmple consensus (MSAC)-Application to 2D and 4D flow.

Purpose: Flow quantification by phase-contrast MRI is hampered by spatially varying background phase offsets. Correction performance by polynomial regression on stationary tissue may be affected by outliers such as wrap-around or constant flow. Therefore, we propose an alternative, M-estimate SAmple Consensus (MSAC) to reject outliers, and improve and fully automate background phase correction.

NGS allele counts versus called genotypes for testing genetic association.

Unlabelled: RNA sequence data are commonly summarized as read counts. By contrast, so far there is no alternative to genotype calling for investigating the relationship between genetic variants determined by next-generation sequencing (NGS) and a phenotype of interest. Here we propose and evaluate the direct analysis of allele counts for genetic association tests.

Development and Validation of a DLLME-GC-MS-MS Method for the Determination of Benzotriazole UV Stabilizer UV-327 and Its Metabolites in Human Blood.

2-(5-Chloro-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4,6-di-(tert-butyl)phenol (UV-327) is used as an ultraviolet (UV) absorber in plastic materials and coatings. To investigate its metabolism and to assess human exposure, analytical methods are necessary for the determination of UV-327 and its metabolites in human biological specimens. The method thus presented targets the determination of UV-327 and several of its predicted metabolites in blood using protein precipitation, dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) and derivatization.

New perspectives for investigating muscular perfusion response after dietary supplement intake: an exploratory, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial in healthy young athletes using contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS).

Background: Various dietary supplements have been reported to enhance muscular perfusion in athletes practicing resistance training, especially through modulation of nitric oxide signaling.

Objectives: The aim of this study was therefore to investigate selected 'NO-boosting' supplements in a real-life setting i) to generate novel hypotheses and perfusion estimates for power calculation in view of a definitive trial and ii) to assess the feasibility of the study design with particular focus on the use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) for perfusion quantification.

Methods: Thirty young male athletes (24 ± 4 years) regularly practicing resistance training were enrolled in this three-arm, placebo(PL)-controlled crossover trial with ingestion of two commercially available supplements: an amino acid combination (AA) (containing 3 g of L-arginine-hydrochloride and 8 g of L-citrulline-malate) and 300 mg of a specific green tea extract (GTE).

Prodromal characteristics of dementia with Lewy bodies: baseline results of the MEMENTO memory clinics nationwide cohort.

Background: Isolated subjective cognitive impairment (SCI) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are the prodromal phases of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). MEMENTO is a nationwide study of patients with SCI and MCI with clinic, neuropsychology, biology, and brain imaging data. We aimed to compare SCI and MCI patients with symptoms of prodromal DLB to others in this study at baseline.

Epigenetic age dysregulation in individuals with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SCZ) are debilitating disorders that are associated with significant burden and reduced quality of life. In this study, we leveraged microarray data derived from both the Illumina HumanMethylation450 platform to investigate the epigenetic age of individuals with SCZ (n = 40), BD (n = 40), and healthy controls (n = 38), across five epigenetic clocks. Various statistical metrics were used to identify discrepancies between epigenetic and chronological age across the three groups.

ATF2 loss promotes tumor invasion in colorectal cancer cells via upregulation of cancer driver TROP2.

In cancer, the activating transcription factor 2 (ATF2) has pleiotropic functions in cellular responses to growth stimuli, damage, or inflammation. Due to only limited studies, the significance of ATF2 in colorectal cancer (CRC) is not well understood. We report that low ATF2 levels correlated with worse prognosis and tumor aggressiveness in CRC patients.

Genome-wide methylation analysis of early-onset schizophrenia.

Objective: Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a debilitating disease with a complex genetic cause in which age at onset may reflect genetic vulnerability. Though there has been some association between genetic polymorphisms and age of onset, there has been little exploration of the role of epigenetic processes. We sought to explore the influence of DNA methylation, a key epigenetic mechanism, and its association with the age of onset of illness.

Pretreatment visceral metastases in castration resistant metastatic prostate cancer: role in prediction versus actual site of disease progression.

Background: To evaluate the anatomic site(s) of initial disease progression in patients with castration resistant metastatic prostate cancer (mCRPC) in the presence or absence of pre-treatment visceral metastases while on systemic therapy.

Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of mCRPC patients who have baseline and at least one follow up bone scan and CT chest, abdomen and pelvis (CAP). Disease progression was determined by RECIST and/or ≥ 30% increase in automated bone scan lesion area score.

Comparative analysis of oral and intravenous iron therapy in rat models of inflammatory anemia and iron deficiency.

Anemia is a major health issue and associated with increased morbidity. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most prevalent, followed by anemia of chronic disease (ACD). IDA and ACD often co-exist, challenging diagnosis and treatment.

An agenda for future Social Sciences and Humanities research on energy efficiency: 100 priority research questions.

Decades of techno-economic energy policymaking and research have meant evidence from the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH)-including critical reflections on what changing a society's relation to energy (efficiency) even means-have been underutilised. In particular, (i) the SSH have too often been sidelined and/or narrowly pigeonholed by policymakers, funders, and other decision-makers when driving research agendas, and (ii) the setting of SSH-focused research agendas has not historically embedded inclusive and deliberative processes. The aim of this paper is to address these gaps through the production of a research agenda outlining future SSH research priorities for energy efficiency.

Psychosis as a Treatment Target in Dementia: A Roadmap for Designing Interventions.

Psychotic phenomena are among the most severe and disruptive symptoms of dementias and appear in 30% to 50% of patients. They are associated with a worse evolution and great suffering to patients and caregivers. Their current treatments obtain limited results and are not free of adverse effects, which are sometimes serious.

Tongue immune compartment analysis reveals spatial macrophage heterogeneity.

The tongue is a unique muscular organ situated in the oral cavity where it is involved in taste sensation, mastication, and articulation. As a barrier organ, which is constantly exposed to environmental pathogens, the tongue is expected to host an immune cell network ensuring local immune defence. However, the composition and the transcriptional landscape of the tongue immune system are currently not completely defined.

Orbital vascular malformation: Successful outcome in two patients treated with rapamycin.

Combined vascular malformations are complex vascular anomalies that have high morbidity and therefore, therapeutic strategies are hard to establish. In this report, we aim to present two pediatric cases of ocular combined vascular malformations successfully treated with rapamycin.

Targeted copy number variant identification across the neurodegenerative disease spectrum.

Background: Although genetic factors are known to contribute to neurodegenerative disease susceptibility, there remains a large amount of heritability unaccounted for across the diagnoses. Copy number variants (CNVs) contribute to these phenotypes, but their presence and influence on disease state remains relatively understudied.

Methods: Here, we applied a depth of coverage approach to detect CNVs in 80 genes previously associated with neurodegenerative disease within participants of the Ontario Neurodegenerative Disease Research Initiative (n = 519).

Functional outcome and CEUS-assessed deltoid muscle vitality after fracture-specific versus standard prosthetic design in reverse shoulder arthroplasty for trauma.

Functional outcome after reverse-shoulder-arthroplasty (RSA) in proximal humerus fractures (PHF) depends on deltoid muscle integrity and successful reattachment of the tuberosities for best possible recovery of rotator-cuff function. In this monocentric, prospective, randomized, controlled trial we investigated whether a reverse-fracture-prosthesis (RFP) with a metaphyseal fenestrated stem achieved superior shoulder and muscle function compared to a common reverse-prosthesis (RP) design for patients with PHF. Our hypothesis was that patients with RFP may achieve a superior healing rate of the greater tuberosity (GT) compared to patients receiving RP, which translates to significantly higher clinical outcome and functional scores as well as differences in deltoid muscle microperfusion.

Delayed Fracture Healing.

Physiologic bone healing involves numerous parameters, such as microstability, fracture morphology, or tissue perfusion, to name just a few. Slight imbalances or a severe impairment of even one of these factors may, as the figurative weakest link in the chain, crucially or completely inhibit the regenerative potential of a fractured bone. This review revisits the physiology and pathophysiology of fracture healing and provides an insight into predispositions, subtypes, diagnostic tools, and therapeutic principles involved with delayed fracture healing and nonunions.
