Familial hypercholesterolaemia is a clinical entity comprising high concentrations of low density lipoproteins, tendinous deposition of cholesterol in a large proportion of affected subjects, and a propensity for the development of atherosclerosis and its complications in the coronary arteries. The aim of this review is to integrate publications with clinical experience into a concise profile of the disorder and its management. In less than a century this disease has been recognised, its lipoprotein derangement identified and numerous causal mutations have been detected.

We examined KGF-1 and KGFR protein and gene expression in healthy and diseased periodontal tissues.
Methods: Tissues were collected from patients with periodontal health or disease, immediately frozen and stained for KGF-1 and KGFR protein expression.

A challenge for those involved in the education and professional development of health and social care practitioners is to find ways of encouraging and enabling them to critically reflect upon complex collaborative situations and consider how they might improve interprofessional relationships. To meet this challenge, we piloted and developed a reflective exercise derived from methods used in personal construct psychology (Hargreaves,1979; Salmon,1994), which has proved to be useful in three overlapping areas; research, professional development, and classroom teaching. To illustrate the technique, this paper presents a case study of one district nurse who used the method to help her examine complex interprofessional relationships when providing long-term community care.

The authors compared in vitro ECM-induced morphological responses of the phenotypically distinct human placental microvascular endothelial cells (HPMECs) with large vessel endothelial cells (HUVECs). HPMECs showed distinct patterns of reorganization in response to collagen-I or collagen-IV (monolayer disruption, sprouting, migration) and Matrigel or laminin-A (intussusception, cord formation, tubulogenesis), and an intermediate response to fibrin; whereas HUVECs responded similarly to collagen-1 and Matrigel (elongation, lattice formation, vacuolation) and showed little response to fibrin.

The ability of keratinocyte growth factor 1 to modulate apoptosis in the absence of proliferation was studied in vitro. A HaCaT scrape wound model was developed in which dense monolayers prior to wounding were cultured to quiescence in defined media with hydroxyurea at concentrations that blocked proliferation without loss of cell viability. Scrape wounding was then found to induce apoptosis, originating at the wound edge, but subsequently radiating away over a 24 h period to encompass areas not originally damaged.

Using RT-PCR amplification products for eNOS, CAT1, CAT2A, CAT2B, CAT4, 4F2hc (CD98), rBAT and the light chains y+LAT1, y+LAT2, and b0+T1 were detected in HPMEC, but not B0+. From the early to the advanced stages of periodontal disease increased epithelial cell proliferation, migration and invasion into the surrounding connective tissue takes place. Concomitantly there is a significant increase in proinflammatory cytokine expression in periodontal tissue and quantitative and qualitative changes in the subgingival microflora, including an increase in gram-negative microorganisms.
