Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease of the central nervous system that is the leading cause of non-traumatic disability in young adults. Clinical laboratory tests and neuroimaging studies are the standard methods to diagnose and monitor MS. However, due to infrequent clinic visits, it is fundamental to identify remote and frequent approaches for monitoring MS, which enable timely diagnosis, early access to treatment, and slowing down disease progression.

Optoacoustic (OA) imaging is based on optical excitation of biological tissues with nanosecond-duration laser pulses and detection of ultrasound (US) waves generated by thermoelastic expansion following light absorption. The image quality and fidelity of OA images critically depend on the extent of tomographic coverage provided by the US detector arrays. However, full tomographic coverage is not always possible due to experimental constraints.

BACKGROUND Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is frequently used in the treatment of end-stage gonarthrosis, and the patient satisfaction rate varies. This study aimed to reveal the change in mid-term patient satisfaction results and functional scores of patients with low early postoperative satisfaction scores. MATERIAL AND METHODS We included 163 patients who underwent total knee prosthesis between September 2017 and February 2018.

Background: We aimed to determine the ideal surgical timing in the first 24 hours after admission to the hospital of pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures (SHF) that do not require emergent intervention.

Materials And Methods: Patients who underwent surgery in our institution between January 2011 and January 2019 due to pediatric Gartland type 3 SHFs were evaluated retrospectively. Open fractures, fractures associated with vascular injury and compartment syndrome, flexion type fractures were excluded.

Quantiles are widely used in both theoretical and applied statistics, and it is important to be able to deploy appropriate quantile estimators. To improve performance in the lower and upper quantiles, especially with small sample sizes, a new quantile estimator is introduced which is a weighted average of all order statistics. The new estimator, denoted NO, has desirable asymptotic properties.

Purpose: For comprehensive surgical planning with sophisticated patient-specific models, all relevant anatomical structures need to be segmented. This could be achieved using deep neural networks given sufficiently many annotated samples; however, datasets of multiple annotated structures are often unavailable in practice and costly to procure. Therefore, being able to build segmentation models with datasets from different studies and centers in an incremental fashion is highly desirable.

Purpose: For guidance of orthopedic surgery, the registration of preoperative images and corresponding surgical plans with the surgical setting can be of great value. Ultrasound (US) is an ideal modality for surgical guidance, as it is non-ionizing, real time, easy to use, and requires minimal (magnetic/radiation) safety limitations. By extracting bone surfaces from 3D freehand US and registering these to preoperative bone models, complementary information from these modalities can be fused and presented in the surgical realm.

Purpose: Planning orthopedic surgeries is commonly performed in computed tomography (CT) images due to the higher contrast of bony structure. However, soft tissues such as muscles and ligaments that may determine the functional outcome of a procedure are not easy to identify in CT, for which fast and accurate segmentation in MRI would be desirable. To be usable in daily practice, such method should provide convenient means of interaction for modifications and corrections, e.

A new test is proposed for the problem of comparing two independent groups in terms of some measure of location. The proposed test () uses a one-step M-estimator and a bootstrap-t method with the procedure proposed by Özdemir and Kurt (2006). Eight methods were compared in terms of actual Type I error and power when the underlying distributions differ in skewness and kurtosis under heterogeneity of variances.

Herein, we report synthesis and self-association properties of amphiphilic double-comb polymers with polyglycidol backbones. First, a bifunctional polyglycidol precursor is synthesized via monomer activated anionic polymerization. Next, two efficient and orthogonal polymer analogous reactions are carried out for grafting hydrophilic oligoethylene glycol side chains and hydrophobic linear aliphatic side-chains.

Stimuli-responsive colloidal microcapsules have been fabricated at the oil-water interface using molecular recognition between functionalized gold nanoparticles. Water-soluble beta-cyclodextrin-capped gold nanoparticles and organo-soluble adamantyl-functionalized gold nanoparticles are self-assembled at the water-toluene interface via specific host-guest molecular interactions to provide robust microcapsules. Multivalent interactions of complementary ligands on the nanoparticle surface provide stability to these capsules.
