The Strait of Sicily (SoS) is a region of key ecological importance because of its peculiar oceanographic conditions, high biodiversity, and critical role as a transition area between the western and eastern basins of the Mediterranean Sea. The SoS was designated as an Ecologically or Biologically Significant Area (EBSA) by the Contracting Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2014 [1] and acknowledged as an Important Shark and Ray Area (ISRA) in 2023 [2]. Ongoing research and conservation efforts are essential to protect this vital marine corridor from increasing anthropogenic pressures.

Weight loss is a common early sign in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients and negatively correlates with survival. In different cancers and metabolic disorders, high levels of serum growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) contribute to a decrease of food intake and body weight, acting through GDNF family receptor alpha-like (GFRAL). Here we report that GDF15 is highly expressed in the peripheral blood of ALS patients and in the hSOD1 mouse model and that GFRAL is upregulated in the brainstem of hSOD1 mice.

Recruitment success depends on external forcing mechanisms such as ocean currents that affect the transport of eggs and larvae to favorable habitats. In this study, we investigated the role of larval transport in the recruitment of Mullus barbatus in the Central Mediterranean Sea by modeling the recruits' abundance as a function of both spawning stock size and dispersal rates of the species' early life stages. Our analysis involved twenty years of data on recruits and spawners abundance obtained from scientific trawl surveys, and data on larval dispersal rates derived from a combination of actualized published sources and original data.

Background: The impact of depth of elaboration in individual psychotherapy sessions on overall treatment effectiveness was found in the empirical literature. In the best sessions, relevant content is processed with greater depth; in contrast, in the shallower sessions, the emerging content is more superficial. Malaria drug research and development efforts have resurged in the last decade following the decelerating rate of mortality and malaria cases in endemic regions. The inefficiency of malaria interventions is largely driven by the spreading resistance of the parasite to current drug regimens and that of the malaria vector, the mosquito, to insecticides. In response to the new eradication agenda, drugs that act by breaking the malaria transmission cycle (transmission-blocking drugs), which has been recognized as an important and additional target for intervention, are being developed.

RNA can directly control protein activity in a process called riboregulation; only a few mechanisms of riboregulation have been described in detail, none of which have been characterized on structural grounds. Here, we present a comprehensive structural, functional, and phylogenetic analysis of riboregulation of cytosolic serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT1), the enzyme interconverting serine and glycine in one-carbon metabolism. We have determined the cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of human SHMT1 in its free- and RNA-bound states, and we show that the RNA modulator competes with polyglutamylated folates and acts as an allosteric switch, selectively altering the enzyme's reactivity vs.

Depressive disorders in adolescence pose unique challenges for assessment and treatment, particularly due to their high comorbidity with various personality disorders. Moreover, young depressed patients may elicit very intense and difficult-to-manage emotional responses in therapists (in this context, countertransference). This study aimed at empirically identifying specific personality disorders (or subtypes) among adolescents with depressive pathology and exploring distinct countertransference patterns emerging in their psychotherapy: 100 adolescents (58 with depressive disorders; 42 with other clinical conditions) were assessed by their respective clinicians (n=100) using the psychodiagnostic chart-adolescent of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM) - second edition, and the therapist response questionnaire for adolescents.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a niche of highly tumorigenic cells featuring self-renewal, activation of pluripotency genes, multidrug resistance, and ability to cause cancer relapse. Seven HDACi (1-7), showing either hydroxamate or 2'-aminoanilide function, were tested in colorectal cancer (CRC) and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) CSCs to determine their effects on cell proliferation, H3 acetylation levels and in-cell HDAC activity. Two uracil-based hydroxamates, 5 and 6, which differ in substitution at C5 and C6 positions of the pyrimidine ring, exhibited the greatest cytotoxicity in GBM (5) and CRC (6) CSCs, followed by the pyridine-hydroxamate 2, with 2- to 6-fold higher potency than the positive control SAHA.
