Muscle inflammation is one of the hallmarks of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Dystrophin-deficient skeletal muscle cells produce higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 1β (IL-1β) in response to toll-like receptor stimulation compared to normal muscle skeletal cells. IL- 1β induces the human skeletal muscle secretion of the myokine Interleukin-6 (IL-6).
