Restoration scientists and practitioners have recently begun to include economic and social aspects in the design and investment decisions for restoration projects. With few exceptions, ecological restoration studies that include economics focus solely on evaluating costs of restoration projects. However, economic principles, tools, and instruments can be applied to a range of other factors that affect project success.

Environmental cost of using poor decision metrics to prioritize environmental projects.

Conservation decision makers commonly use project-scoring metrics that are inconsistent with theory on optimal ranking of projects. As a result, there may often be a loss of environmental benefits. We estimated the magnitudes of these losses for various metrics that deviate from theory in ways that are common in practice.

Pharmaceutical care of older people: what do older people want from community pharmacy?

Objectives: To explore older people's opinions of current community pharmacy provision and identify potential areas for improvement.

Methods: A pilot focus group was conducted to finalise the topic areas for discussion. Three focus groups and three small group interviews were held with a total of 25 people aged over 65 years.

Advantages of sutureless aortic valve in a patient with unsuspected pheochromocytoma.

We describe a 60-year-old man who underwent elective aortic valve replacement and concurrent single graft coronary artery bypass surgery with acute intraoperative hypertension. The early suspicion of a pheochromocytoma and immediate aggressive pharmacologic intervention are discussed. Expeditious surgery contributed to the good outcome.

Effects of microwave treatment of soil on growth of birch (Betula pendula) seedlings and infection of them by ectomycorrhizal fungi.

Seedlings of birch (Betula pendula Roth.) were grown for 12 weeks in small volumes of field soils heated in a microwave (MW) oven for different times and then either supplemented or not with inocula of ectomycorrhizal fungi and, in one case, with fresh agricultural soil. Growth of roots and shoots was assessed, and the incidence of different mycorrhizal types, distinguished by colour and morphology, was recorded.
