Revisiting Eysenck: The Association Between Personality and Acute Stress Reactivity.

Eysenck's biopsychological model of stress posits that the extraversion-introversion distinction is associated with different thresholds of arousal, which in turn moderate the stress response. Although higher thresholds of activation have been reported in the context of physiological stress induction, more contemporary research has resulted in mixed findings. The objective of the current study was to revisit Eysenck's biopsychological model of stress by examining associations between the two personality dimensions (extraversion-introversion and neuroticism-stability) and stress reactivity in response to the Trier Social Stress Test.

A mixed methods feasibility study of a virtual group-based social support program for older adults in residential care.

Objectives: In response to calls for inventive ways to mitigate risks of physical distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic for older adults living in residential care, the JAVA Music Club-Digital (JMC-D) was developed. The current feasibility study investigated benefits, usability, and implementation of weekly JMC-D sessions over 6 months.

Method: Employing a pre-post mixed methods study, depressive symptoms, loneliness, social isolation, and quality of life were measured at baseline, 3 and 6 months.

Background: Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) is an alternative to conventional surgery to treat severe mitral disease but its use is limited by the risk of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO). Screening depends on ECG-gated computed tomography (CT) that is not widely available and requires contrast. We developed and validated a transthoracic echocardiographic (TTE) method to assess the risk of LVOTO after TMVR with the Tendyne System.

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) is an emerging nanospectroscopy technique whose implementation in situ/, namely, in the liquid phase and under electrochemical polarization (EC-TERS), remains challenging. The investigation of electrochemical processes at the nanoscale, in real time and over wide potential windows can be of particular interest but tedious when using EC-STM-TERS. This approach was successfully applied to the investigation of a well-established but yet complex system (a thiolated nitrobenzene derivative 4-NBM) whose reduction mechanism involves various multistep reaction paths, most likely pH-dependent.

Methods: This study examined the associations between circulating CVRF biomarkers and cognition in 386 cognitively healthy older adults (mean age = 78 ± 4 years, 53% females) selected from the Quebec Longitudinal Study on Nutrition and Successful Aging (NuAge). Memory, executive function, and processing speed were assessed at baseline and 2-year follow-up.

Understanding the social and leisure needs of lonely and socially isolated older adults living in residential care: a qualitative study.

Rates of loneliness and social isolation increase following the transition to residential care and are associated with poor health outcomes. One way to mitigate these experiences is through meaningful recreation, however, there is research to suggest that currently available programming does not meet the needs of lonely and socially isolated residents. Therefore, the objectives of the current study were to investigate: (1) the lived experience of loneliness and social isolation in residential care, (2) engagement and use of available resources by these residents, and (3) insights as to how programming can further address their needs.

Nutrition risk and cognitive performance in community-living older adults without cognitive impairment: a cross-sectional analysis of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

Malnutrition is correlated with poor cognition; however, an understanding of the association between nutrition risk, which precedes malnutrition, and cognition is lacking. This study aimed to determine if nutrition risk measured with the SCREEN-8 tool is associated with cognitive performance among cognitively healthy adults aged 55+, after adjusting for demographic and lifestyle covariates. Objectives: Although chronic stress is a risk factor for poor age-related cognitive health, there is limited research that has examined how cumulative stress across the lifespan affects cognitive aging. There may also be resilience factors that minimize the effects of cumulative stress on cognitive health. Engaging in a healthy lifestyle is protective against cognitive decline and may therefore interact with cumulative stress to buffer the stress-cognition relationship.

Neuroticism and Stress in Older Adults: The Buffering Role of Self-Esteem.

Background: Chronic stress is associated with accelerated aging and poor health outcomes in older adults. According to the Transactional Model of Stress (TMS), distress is experienced when one perceives the stressor, or threat, to outweigh the ability to cope. The experience of distress is correlated with trait neuroticism, which is associated with greater perceptions of stress and stress reactivity, as well as a tendency to engage in maladaptive coping strategies.

First in human neochordae retensioning for recurrence of mitral regurgitation after neochord procedure.

The Neochord procedure is a viable option to treat degenerative mitral valve regurgitation in selected patients. Left ventricle reverse remodeling can cause neochord-relative elongation and reprolapse of the treated leaflet, leading to failure. We present a clinical case of extensive ventricle reverse remodeling after neochord implantation and the first-in-man off-pump surgical retensioning of the previously implanted artificial chords.

Case report: Treatment of left-sided valve endocarditis using the Transapical AngioVac System and cerebral embolism protection device: A case series.

The AngioVac System (AngioDynamics, Latham, NY) was developed for the treatment of right-sided heart and intravenous masses. Lately, it has been employed to deal with left-sided heart masses, in particular, native valve endocarditis (NVE) and valve prostheses endocarditis (VPE) in high-risk patients. Left-sided heart endocarditis has a high morbidity, and it also has a high mortality when open heart surgery is performed.

Objectives: The present study aims to assess and describe the intracardiac blood flow dynamic in patients with mitral regurgitation (MR), repaired mitral valves (MV) and mitral valve prostheses using vector flow mapping (VFM).

Methods: Patients with different MV pathologies and MV disease treatments were analysed. All patients underwent 2D transthoracic echocardiography, and images for flow visualization were acquired in VFM mode in an apical three-chamber view and four-chamber view.

Objectives: Despite social engagement being a robust predictor of wellbeing for older adults living in residential care, social programming ceased during the COVID-19 pandemic to abide by social distancing guidelines. Consequently, a tablet-based program called the Java Music Club-Digital (JMC-D) was developed. The JMC-D enables residents to engage with peers through discussion and singing from the safety of their own rooms.

A 20-year experience in cardiac tumors: a single center surgical experience and a review of literature.

Introduction: Cardiac tumors are rare and heterogeneous entities which still remain a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. The treatment for most cardiac tumors is prompt surgical resection. We sought to provide an overview of surgical results from a series of consecutive patients treated at our tertiary care center during almost a 20-year experience.

Stress across the Lifespan: From Risk to Management-Conference Report on the Inaugural Canadian Stress Research Summit.

In 2021, the Toronto Metropolitan University Institute for Stress and Wellbeing Research welcomed over 200 conference delegates across Canada to the inaugural Canadian Stress Research Summit (CSRS) to share ideas and foster collaboration among Canadian scholars. This conference was unique from existing international stress-related conferences as it bridged science and community. The objective of this conference report is to provide an overview of the 3-day virtual inaugural stress conference, offering a summary of the keynote addresses, themed symposia, spotlight presentations, graphical designs of selected presentations, and conference feedback.

The association between Mediterranean diet adherence and allostatic load in older adults.

Allostatic load (AL) is a multisystemic index of biological wear and tear which is associated with poor health outcomes. In recent years, researchers have examined the association between dietary pattern intake and AL; however, no studies to date have examined the relationship between AL and consumption of a Mediterranean diet. Blood and urine samples were collected from 201 community-dwelling older adults who completed a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ).

The Effect of a Brief Mindfulness Practice on Perceived Stress and Sustained Attention: Does Priming Matter?

Objectives: The objective of the current study was to investigate the effect of a brief mindfulness practice on perceived stress and sustained attention, and to determine whether priming the benefits of mindfulness meditation enhances this effect.

Methods: Two hundred and twenty undergraduate students were randomly assigned to a control condition (CC), a meditation condition (MC), or a priming + meditation condition (PMC). Baseline and post-treatment measures included subjective stress ratings on a visual analog scale (VAS) and performance on a Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART), determined by reaction time coefficient of variability (RTCV) and three measures of accuracy: correct responses, errors of commission, and errors of omission.
