Article Synopsis
  • Assessing glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is essential for kidney disease management, but current methods, particularly estimated GFR (eGFR), can have significant errors affecting patient care.
  • Researchers propose using a panel of multiple filtration markers, alongside non-GFR determinants, to enhance the accuracy of these estimates, building on previous findings that cystatin C improves eGFR precision.
  • Initial evaluations indicate that applying techniques like outlier identification and transfer learning can significantly improve eGFR accuracy, even in populations where traditional methods struggle.

Introduction: There remains uncertainty about whether transitioning to oral antibiotic therapy is appropriate for the management of children with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremic osteomyelitis. We compared clinical outcomes for children with MRSA osteomyelitis with associated bacteremia who were transitioned to discharge oral antibiotic therapy to those discharged on outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT).

Methods: We performed a retrospective, multicenter, cohort study of children ≤ 18 years hospitalized with MRSA bacteremic osteomyelitis across four children's hospitals from 2007 to 2018 discharged on oral antibiotic therapy versus OPAT.

Context: Wearable sensors are increasingly popular in concussion research because of their objective quantification of subtle balance deficits. However, normative data and minimal detectable change (MDC) values are necessary to serve as references for diagnostic use and tracking longitudinal recovery.

Objective: To identify normative and MDC values for instrumented static- and reactive-balance tests, an instrumented static mediolateral (ML) root mean square (RMS) sway standing balance assessment and the instrumented, modified push and release (I-mP&R), respectively.

Creatinine and cystatin-C are recommended for estimating glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) but accuracy is suboptimal. Here, using untargeted metabolomics data, we sought to identify candidate filtration markers for a new targeted assay using a novel approach based on their maximal joint association with measured GFR (mGFR) and with flexibility to consider their biological properties. We analyzed metabolites measured in seven diverse studies encompasing 2,851 participants on the Metabolon H4 platform that had Pearson correlations with log mGFR and used a stepwise approach to develop models to < -0.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated how urgent care clinicians prescribe antibiotics for conditions like sinusitis, acute otitis media, and pharyngitis, focusing on the choice of first-line antibiotics and their recommended durations of therapy.
  • Conducted within the Intermountain Health network over one year, the research analyzed clinician practices and the factors influencing prescription patterns using descriptive statistics and modeling techniques.
  • Results showed that first-line antibiotic selection was 75%, with variability based on condition; AOM had the highest selection rate (83%), while sinusitis had the lowest (69%). The study suggests a need for continued efforts to optimize antibiotic prescribing.

Vibration is a widely used mode of haptic communication, as vibrotactile cues provide salient haptic notifications to users and are easily integrated into wearable or handheld devices. Fluidic textile-based devices offer an appealing platform for the incorporation of vibrotactile haptic feedback, as they can be integrated into clothing and other conforming and compliant wearables. Fluidically driven vibrotactile feedback has primarily relied on valves to regulate actuating frequencies in wearable devices.

Unlabelled: Identifying risk factors for musculoskeletal injury is critical to maintain the health and safety of athletes. While current tests consider isolated assessments of function or subjective ratings, objective tests of reactive postural responses, especially when in cognitively demanding scenarios, may better identify risk of musculoskeletal injury than traditional tests alone.

Objectives: Examine if objective assessments of reactive postural responses, quantified using wearable inertial measurement units, are associated with the risk for acute lower extremity musculoskeletal injuries in collegiate athletes.

Background: Improving pain management for persons with chronic low back pain (LBP) undergoing surgery is an important consideration in improving patient-centered outcomes and reducing the risk of persistent opioid use after surgery. Nonpharmacological treatments, including physical therapy and mindfulness, are beneficial for nonsurgical LBP through complementary biopsychosocial mechanisms, but their integration and application for persons undergoing surgery for LBP have not been examined. This study (MIND-PT) is a multisite randomized trial that compares an enriched pain management (EPM) pathway that integrates physical therapy and mindfulness vs usual-care pain management (UC) for persons undergoing surgery for LBP.
