Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common global respiratory virus that is increasingly recognized as a major pathogen in frail older adults and as a cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations. There is no single test for RSV in adults that has acceptable diagnostic accuracy. Trials of RSV vaccines have recently shown excellent safety and efficacy against RSV in older adults; defining the frequency of RSV-related community infections and COPD exacerbations is important for vaccine deployment decisions.

This review focuses on recent updates in COPD research which have had an impact on our understanding of the epidemiology and pathophysiology of COPD.
Recent Findings: Epidemiological studies of COPD have moved towards trying to understand the global impact of COPD particularly in low- and middle-income countries where disease prevalence continues to increase.
The chronic exposure of humans to the toxic metal cadmium (Cd), either occupational or from food and air, causes various diseases, including neurodegenerative conditions, dysfunction of vital organs, and cancer. While the toxicology of Cd and its effect on the homeostasis of biologically relevant elements is increasingly recognized, the spatial distribution of Cd and other elements in Cd toxicity-caused diseases is still poorly understood. Here, we use as a non-mammalian multicellular model system to determine the distribution of Cd at the tissue and cellular resolution and its effect on the internal levels and the distribution of biologically relevant elements.

We demonstrate that ultrafast laser filament-induced fluorescence of chlorophyll in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a promising method for remote, in-field detection of stress from exposure to nuclear materials. This method holds an advantage over broad-area surveillance, such as solar-induced fluorescence monitoring, when targeting excitation of a specific plant would improve the detectability, for example when local biota density is low.

The rapid global spread and significant mortality associated with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) viral infection has spurred an urgent race to find effective treatments. Repurposing existing drugs is a particularly attractive approach as pharmacokinetic and safety data already exist; thus, development can leapfrog straight to clinical trials of efficacy, generating results far more quickly than drug development.
