Objective: To evaluate clinically transvenous single lead VDD pacing in children with complete heart block.

Design: Case series.

Setting: Tertiary care unit of a pediatric teaching hospital.

A surgical model for determination of true absorption and biliary excretion of manganese in conscious swine fed commercial diets.

Some trace elements, such as Mn, Cu and Zn, are absorbed and quickly resecreted into the gut through the bile. When this occurs, the unabsorbed nutrient and the absorbed and resecreted nutrient may mix in the gut, preventing quantitative calculation of either. We have developed a surgical model that prevents this complication.

The Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale: how does it compare with a "gold standard"?

Unlabelled: Evaluating the effectiveness of interventions directed toward the treatment of preoperative anxiety in children has been hindered by the absence of a statistically valid measurement tool. In a previous investigation, we developed an instrument (Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale [YPAS]) that can be used to assess anxiety in children undergoing induction of anesthesia. The purpose of the present investigation was to modify and expand the applicability of the instrument to the preoperative holding area and to validate the modified instrument (m-YPAS) against a recognized "gold standard" (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Childrens [STAIC]).

The influence of culture time and passage number on the morphological and physiological development of Caco-2 cells.

The Caco-2 cell line is used by many investigators as a model of the intestinal epithelium to study nutrient uptake and transport. Our goal was to create an awareness of inherent variabilities in the Caco-2 cell line which may influence their suitability as a model or their application to specific problems. To study the influence of passage on the model, cultures were monitored from passage 20 to 109.

Paediatric echocardiography by telemedicine--nine years' experience.

In 1987 we established a realtime echocardiography service by telemedicine from the paediatric cardiology department of a tertiary-care hospital in Halifax. The service was initially provided to single regional hospital but was expanded to six regional hospitals in the three Canadian Maritime Provinces. The system used a dial-up broadband video-transmission service provided by the telephone companies.

Expanding the CNS role to the community.

As health care reform results in fewer acute care days and cost-containment is emphasized, the role of the CNS becomes more important, although not necessarily in acute care, which has been the tradition. If the CNS role is to survive health care reform, it must expand into the community. The literature supports the effectiveness of the CNS in the community.

NMR applications in complex food systems.

The rheological and functional properties of food components are related to their molecular structure, morphology, and atomic mobilities. NMR provides a powerful tool for elucidating chemical structures, molecular conformations, and interactions of components in food systems. Quantitative analysis of sugars, fats, and other principal compounds in complex food systems was achieved by high-resolution liquid NMR.

Growth factors as potential drugs for the sensory epithelia of the ear.

The highly ordered structures of the hearing and balance organs of vertebrate ears go through a coordinated sequence of cellular and morphogenetic events. It is to be expected that protein growth factors and other extracellular signals will regulate many events during embryonic development of the ear, including the induction of the ear, the specific induction of sensory epithelia, the proliferation of the cells that form the sensory epithelia, the differentiation of the sensory and supporting cells, and the attraction and maintenance of innervation. After embryonic development, growth factors will support cell survival and innervation of new sensory cells.

Use of stable isotopic selenium as a tracer to follow incorporation of selenium into selenoproteins.

Stable isotopes of selenium (Se) have been used in human studies to measure Se absorption, retention and excretion. The purpose of this study was to examine whether stable Se could also be used to follow the incorporation of Se into selenoproteins and whether selenoproteins are labeled with stable isotopes the same way they are with radioactive Se. Rats fed either a Se-deficient or a high-Se diet were injected with either a radioactive (75Se) or a stable isotope of Se (77Se), and the liver cytosol was chromatographed on Sephadex G-200.

Galanin expression in carotid body afferent neurons.

The present study examined expression and plasticity of the neuropeptide, galanin, in carotid body afferent neurons in the petrosal ganglion of the adult rat. The pattern of galanin expression was compared with that of tyrosine hydroxylase, a selective marker of dopaminergic carotid body afferents in the petrosal ganglion. In normal animals, only 3% of tyrosine hydroxylase-containing petrosal ganglion neurons co-expressed galanin.

Serous effusion cytology in gynecologic malignant mixed müllerian tumors.

We reviewed 51 serous effusions (50 peritoneal/one pleural) from 38 patients with uterine (30 cases) and ovarian (eight cases) malignant mixed Müllerian tumors (MMMT). There were 16 patients (42%) with positive effusion cytology specimens; 13 cases (81%) were diagnosed as adenocarcinoma with three cases (19%) interpreted as having a sarcomatous component. Eight of 16 positive effusion specimens had cell block material available for immunoperoxidase (IP) study that included cytokeratin (AE1/3), vimentin, muscle specific actin (HHF) and S-100 protein to determine if unsuspected mesenchymal components were present in the cases originally diagnosed as carcinoma (six cases), or sarcomas (two cases).
