Globally, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death. Previous trials demonstrated that low-dose computed tomography lung cancer screening of high-risk individuals can reduce lung cancer mortality by 20% or more. Lung cancer screening has been approved by major guidelines in the United States, and over 4,000 sites offer screening.

Purpose: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Canada, and because early cancers are often asymptomatic screening aims to prevent mortality by detecting cancer earlier when treatment is more likely to be curative. These reviews will inform updated recommendations by the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care on screening for lung cancer.

Methods: We will update the review on the benefits and harms of screening with CT conducted for the task force in 2015 and perform de novo reviews on the comparative effects between (i) trial-based selection criteria and use of risk prediction models and (ii) trial-based nodule classification and different nodule classification systems and on patients' values and preferences.

For much of the past two decades, the treatment options for patients with stage III NSCLC were mostly stagnant. In the past 5 years, ongoing innovations have dovetailed alongside advances in biomarker testing, novel therapeutics, precision surgery, and radiotherapy, all of which are leading to an increase in more personalized option for the treatment. This review article will focus on several completed and ongoing initiatives involving treatment of patients with stage III NSCLC.

The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, atomic nuclei that continuously impact Earth's atmosphere, is unknown. Because of deflection by interstellar magnetic fields, cosmic rays produced within the Milky Way arrive at Earth from random directions. However, cosmic rays interact with matter near their sources and during propagation, which produces high-energy neutrinos.

The ideal contrast agents for ventilation SPECT and MRI are Technegas and Xe gas, respectively. Despite increasing interest in the clinical utility of ventilation imaging, these modalities have not been directly compared. Therefore, our objective was to compare the ventilation defect percent (VDP) assessed by Technegas SPECT and hyperpolarized Xe MRI in patients scheduled to undergo lung cancer resection with and without pre-existing obstructive lung disease.

Mirizzi syndrome (MS) is a rare complication of chronic cholelithiasis. The syndrome describes gallstone obstruction of Hartmann's pouch or the cystic duct that extrinsically compresses the common hepatic duct, causing obstructive jaundice. In advanced cases, the gallstones may erode into the biliary tree creating a fistula, requiring prompt diagnosis and careful surgical management.

  • The study investigates the expression of thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1) and napsin A in lung biopsies of small cell carcinoma (SCLC) from 2011 to 2020, highlighting the need for better characterization in this area.
  • Out of 5,867 lung core biopsies, 232 were identified as SCLC, with 173 having TTF-1 results; 16 of these were TTF-1 negative but still confirmed as SCLC with other positive markers.
  • The findings suggest that about 9% of SCLC cases are TTF-1 negative, and the absence of napsin A, with minimal positivity seen in SCLC, indicates the need to consider alternative diagnoses

Mediastinal lymph node fine needle aspiration (MLN-FNA) is a common procedure; however, the physician factor in pathological category, and anatomical site are not routinely assessed. Cytology reports for endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)/endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) MLN-FNA specimens (8846) were retrieved for July 2012-Dec 2019, classified by hierarchical free text string match algorithm into 51 diagnostic categories, four mutually exclusive diagnostic groups (benign |suspicious |malignant |insufficient), and 24 anatomical sites. Pathologist and submitting physician/surgeon bias were assessed using logistic regression and funnel plots|control charts centered on the group median (diagnostic/capture) rate.

  • Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are important in clinical research, but assessing the reliability of their P values can be challenging, which is where the Fragility Index comes in.
  • This study focused on calculating the Fragility Index for RCTs related to esophagectomy to evaluate the validity of their significant findings.
  • Out of 41 RCTs analyzed, the Fragility Index was found to be low, indicating that the results could easily change from significant to non-significant by adjusting just a few patient's results.
