The controversy over whether repeated head impact (RHI)-a feature of occupations including professional contact sports, military service, firefighting, and logging-can cause the neurodegenerative disease now known as CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) has thrust many positive epidemiologic studies into the spotlight. Various skeptics who dispute that the relationship is strong and causal continue to raise objections to these studies and their interpretation. The arguments these skeptics use remind other observers of many past sagas of "manufactured doubt," particularly the history of attempts to cast doubt on the propensity of tobacco products to cause lung cancer.

Methods: The Warrior Strong Study (NCT01847040) is an observational longitudinal study of United States-based soldiers who had recently returned from deployment to Afghanistan or Iraq from 2009 to 2014.
The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of short-term oral administration of inorganic nitrate (NaNO3; n = 8) or placebo (NaCl; n = 9) (each 0.1 mmol/kg body weight/d for 9 days) on plasma amino acids, creatinine, and oxidative stress in healthy young men. At baseline, the plasma concentrations of amino acids did not differ between the groups.

Content was refined to areas most salient to our goal of informing the provision of equitable care in headache treatment through discussions with a group of 16 experts from a range of headache subspecialties.

Purpose Of Review: Post-traumatic headache (PTH) consequent to mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a complex, multidimensional, chronic neurological disorder. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the current neuroimaging studies on mTBI and PTH with a specific focus on brain networks and connectivity patterns.
Recent Findings: We present findings on PTH incidence and prevalence, as well as the latest neuroimaging research findings on mTBI and PTH.
In this article, we discuss four vexing problems in risk-based decision making that John Evans has addressed over the last nearly 40 years and has perennially challenged the two of us and others to think about. We tackle the role in decision making of potential thresholds in dose-response functions, how the lack of health reference values for many chemicals may distort risk management, the challenge of model uncertainty for risk characterization, and the yet-untapped potential for value-of-information analysis to enhance public health decision making. Our theme is that work remains to be done on each of these, but that some of that work would merely involve listening to ideas that John has already offered.

Methods: Participants are a random sample of recently deployed soldiers from the Warrior Strong cohort, consisting of soldiers with (n = 557) and without (n = 1,030) a history of a recent mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI; concussion). mTBI+ soldiers were subdivided as PTH+ (n = 230) and PTH- (n = 327).
The availability of large amounts of high-throughput genomic, transcriptomic and epigenomic data has provided opportunity to understand regulation of the cellular transcriptome with an unprecedented level of detail. As a result, research has advanced from identifying gene expression patterns associated with particular conditions to elucidating signalling pathways that regulate expression. There are over 1,000 transcription factors (TFs) in vertebrates that play a role in this regulation.

Even some of the most well-accepted causal associations in public health, such as that linking cigarette smoking to increased lung cancer risk, have intriguing research questions remaining to be answered. The inquiry whether an exposure causes a disease is never wholly a yes/no question but ought to follow from an appraisal of the weight of evidence supporting the positive conclusion in light of any coherent theories casting doubt on this evidence and the data supporting these.

Objective: To characterize the intranetwork functional connectivity within the Central Executive Network (CEN) and Default Mode Network (DMN) in chronic migraine (CM), with and without medication overuse headache (MOH).
Methods: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we performed post-hoc analysis of a total of 136 pairs of nodes to node functional connectivity (NTNC) within the CEN and 6 pairs of NTNC within the DMN in CM (n=13) and CM (n=16) as compared to controls, and between these two subgroups.
Objective: In this retrospective study of active duty service members (ADSMs), possible relationships were examined between extent of headache pain depicted on head/neck diagrams and headache phenomenology.
Background: The signature injury of US military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan is mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Blast injury, especially from improvised explosive devices, was the most common cause during the height of the wars; the most persistent symptom remains posttraumatic headache (PTH).
