Objective: Slow-release GnRH agonist implants (SRI) are used for reversible medical downregulation of testicular function in male dogs as an alternative to surgery. The 4.7 mg deslorelin SRI should reduce testosterone after 6-8 weeks and induce castration-like effects for 6 months (mon).

The Efficacy of a 3β-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Inhibitor for the Termination of Mid-Term Pregnancies in Dogs.

Progesterone (P4) is the only hormone needed to maintain pregnancy in dogs. Therefore, a competitive inhibitor of 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) could be a safe and effective option to terminate pregnancy by inhibiting P4 synthesis. To address this hypothesis, we investigated the efficacy of trilostane (TRL), a competitive inhibitor of 3β-HSD, in terminating pregnancy in dogs.

Plasma concentration and uterine and ovarian expressions of insulin-like growth factor-2 in dogs with cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra.

The objective of this study was to investigate the plasma concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-2 (IGF-2) as well as its expression in the uterus and ovary of healthy dogs and those with cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH)-pyometra complex. Group 1 (n = 10) included bitches with open cervix pyometra, while Group 2 (n = 7) consisted of clinically healthy bitches in dioestrus. The number of IGF-2 immunopositive interstitial cells was significantly higher in Group 1, whereas in Group 2 there were only two cases in which a few cells were IGF-2 immunopositive.

Hybrid nanoflowers modified pencil graphite electrodes developed for electrochemical monitoring of interaction between Mitomycin C and DNA.

In the present study, biocompatible hybrid nanoflowers (NFs) were synthesized by amino acids (glycine, l-lysine) via a simple, rapid and cost-effective methods. NFs were characterized by using FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, SEM and EDX techniques. Modified pencil graphite electrode (PGE) surfaces with well-defined NFs were developed to electrochemical monitoring of calf thymus double stranded DNA (ctdsDNA) using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) for the first time.

Why USB-endoscope laryngoscopy is as effective as video laryngoscopy.

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of a low-cost custom-made universal serial bus (USB) endoscope laryngoscope for intubation with a direct laryngoscope and a high-cost video laryngoscope in a mannequin study.

Methods: We used one intubation simulator model (mannequin) in our study. A USB endoscope was mounted to the direct laryngoscope as a custom-made USB endoscope laryngoscope (USB-L).

Impact of timing on wound dressing removal after caesarean delivery: a multicentre, randomised controlled trial.

We compared wound dressing removal at 24 hours 48 hours following low-risk caesarean deliveries. This multicentre, randomised, controlled study included patients 18-44 years of age with low-risk term, singleton pregnancies. The randomisation was done weekly.

Gene expression profiling of the canine placenta during normal and antigestagen-induced luteolysis.

The domestic dog is the only domestic animal species that does not produce steroids in the placenta and instead relies on luteal steroids throughout pregnancy. Nevertheless, the canine placenta is highly responsive to steroids, and withdrawal of progesterone (P4) affects the feto-maternal unit, initializing the parturition cascade. Similar effects can be observed during antigestagen-induced abortion.

Effect of oral misoprostol, alone or in combination with aglepristone, on mid-term pregnancy termination in cats.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of oral misoprostol (MIS) administration in the induction of mid-term pregnancy termination in cats.

Methods: Twenty-eight cats that were pregnant for 30-40 days were allocated to four groups. The aglepristone (AGL) group (n = 7) received 10 mg/kg SC aglepristone q24h for two consecutive days.

Comparison of radiofrequency and transoral robotic surgery in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome treatment.

Introduction: Radiofrequency tissue ablation (RFTA) and transoral robotic surgery (TORS) are the methods used in OSAS surgery. We also aimed to compare the advantages and disadvantages of RF and TORS as treatment methods applied in OSAS patients in terms of many parameters, especially apnea hypopnea index (AHI).

Materials And Methods: Patients were classified by performing a detailed examination and evaluation before surgery.

Samples were assigned to four groups: metestrous non-pregnant, day 10-12, n = 4; pre-implantation, day 10-12, n = 9; post-implantation, day 18-25, n = 13; mid-gestation, day 30-40, n = 7. RT-qPCR detection was performed for kiss1 and the G protein-coupled receptor 54 (GPR54, specific receptor for kisspeptin).

Serum Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin Levels In Early Detection Of Contrast-Induced Nephropathy.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) levels in the early detection of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN).

Methods: This prospective study enrolled 74 patients undergoing abdominal tomography with contrast (1 November 2014 - 28 February 2015). Demographic properties (age and sex), symptoms and CT examination results were analysed.

Objectives: Organ transplant is an effective treatment for patients with end-stage renal and hepatic failure. Increased use has introduced more emergency department admissions of infectious origin after transplant. Because infections usually manifest with simple complaints and fever, emergency physicians need laboratory tests and radiologic imaging procedures to quickly detect the presence and source of infection.

Effect of deslorelin on testicular function, serum dihydrotestosterone and oestradiol concentrations during and after suppression of sexual activity in tom cats.

Objectives The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of a 4.7 mg deslorelin implant in tom cats. Methods Nine mature male cats were included in the deslorelin group and five cats in the control group.

Tarantula cubensis extract alters the degree of apoptosis and mitosis in canine mammary adenocarcinomas.

In the present study, 13 clinical cases of canine mammary adenocarcinoma were evaluated in order to understand the effect of Tarantula cubensis extract (TCE) on tumor tissue. Punch biopsies were taken from the tumors before treatment with TCE. Subcutaneous injections of TCE were administered three times at weekly intervals (3 mL per dog).

Expression of genes involved in the embryo-maternal interaction in the early-pregnant canine uterus.

Although there is no acute luteolytic mechanism in the absence of pregnancy in the bitch, a precise and well-timed embryo-maternal interaction seems to be required for the initiation and maintenance of gestation. As only limited information is available about these processes in dogs, in this study, the uterine expression of possible decidualization markers was investigated during the pre-implantation stage (days 10-12) of pregnancy and in the corresponding nonpregnant controls. In addition, the expression of selected genes associated with blastocyst development and/or implantation was investigated in embryos flushed from the uteri of bitches used for this study (unhatched and hatched blastocysts).

The aim of this study was to investigate the plasma concentrations of folic acid, vitamin B12 and progesterone at different stages of the sexual cycle and pregnancy, during induced abortion and in bitches with pyometra. Bitches (n = 97) were assigned to groups as follows: a) oestrous cycle (n = 42) b) pregnancy (n = 25) c) induction of abortion (n = 10 and d) pyometra (n = 20). Oestrous cycle stages were determined by vaginal inspection and cytology.

A screening for the occurrence of autoreactive antibodies in sera of pregnant and non-pregnant bitches.

Sera of healthy pregnant (group I, n = 11) and non-pregnant (group II, n = 11) bitches were screened for autoantibodies (AAb). In both groups, blood samples were drawn every fifth day between days 5 and 55 after mating. Serum was analysed via indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) with the Canine ANA HEp-2 Screening Kit.

The activity of matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9 in serum of pregnant and non-pregnant bitches.

The aim of this study was to investigate, whether the activity of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 in the serum of pregnant and non-pregnant bitches differs significantly. For this purpose, 81 blood samples were taken from pregnant bitches at days 5-13, 15-21, 24-31, 34-40 and 41-50 after mating, and 51 samples from non-pregnant animals at corresponding times. Relative enzyme activity, calculated as the percentage of serum enzyme activity on enzyme activity in a control sample, was determined with a commercially available assay after activation of serum MMPs with p-aminophenylmercuric acetate (APMA).

Induction of abortion in queens by administration of cabergoline (Galastop) solely or in combination with the PGF2alpha analogue Alfaprostol (Gabbrostim).

The efficacy of cabergoline solely or combined with a PGF2alpha analogue in inducing abortion at different stages of pregnancy was investigated in 18 queens. The queens were assigned to two treatments: Group I ( n=10 )-cabergoline (15 microg/kg; daily, orally) and Group II ( n=8 )-cabergoline (15 microg/kg; daily, orally) combined with alfaprostol (10 microg/kg; every other day, subcutaneously). Each group was divided into two subgroups according to the duration of pregnancy when treatments started: Group IA ( n=8 ) included queens from Days 34 to 42 after mating.

In this study diagnostic certainty of ultrasonography and rectal palpation concerning the detection of follicles and C.I. was compared by evaluation of the findings obtained with ultrasonography in waterbath and dissection of the ovaries after slaughter.
