[The significance of antistreptolysin O characteristics for the determination of indications for tonsillectomy in the children].

The objective of the present work was to evaluate the diagnostic significance of the measurement of the antistreptolysin O (ASLO) titers in the children presenting with chronic tonsillitis for determining the indications for tonsillectomy. The study included 54 patients at the age varying from 4 to 17 years who had undergone bilateral tonsillectomy for the treatment of chronic tonsillitis. The diagnosis was confirmed by the results of the histological study of the removed amygdalae.

[HIV infection in the Stavropol' region].

The data on the dynamics of HIV infection in the Stavropol Territory beginning with 1987 are given. The situation became aggravated after 1996, and its sharp deterioration occurred in 2000 when 138 cases of HIV infection were detected and the area of this infection increased. In most cases patients became infected beyond the borders of the territory.

[Effect of thyroid hormones and diacylglycerols on sphingomyelin metabolism in liver cell nuclei in rats of various ages].

Sphingomyelin metabolism in liver cell nuclei of rats of various age has been studied. It was found that the level of sphingomyelin hydrolysis in cell nuclei is the highest in young animals, showing a decrease in 24-month-old animals. The age-specific fluctuations in the activity of phospholipase C may be one of possible reasons for sphingomyelinase activity changes in liver nuclei during ontogenesis.

[Effect of oxygen on the growth, respiratory rate and morphology of Candida utilis cells in periodic and continuous cultures].

The aim of this work was to study how the concentration of oxygen dissolved in the cultural broth influenced the respiration and morphology of the yeast Candida utilis in batch and continuous cultures. Highly effective respiration was registered in cells growing for a certain period of time at low oxygen concentrations limiting the growth; the respiration was characterized by low values of the Michaelis constant kc and the critical concentration of dissolved oxygen Ccr. When passing from the low oxygen concentration to a high one, the character of cellular respiration changed abruptly in the cells whose growth was limited with oxygen for a long time.
